My thoughts?

It looks fun. I'm actually pretty hyped to see it after watching the trailer. I can't imagine not enjoying this movie, especially if you're a fan.

That being said...

At 54 years old, Cate Blanchett is way too old to be playing Lilith, but they did right by the look otherwise. She's a great actress so maybe she can pull it off.

Kevin Hart appears to be a great choice for Roland.

Krieg doesn't appear to get enough screentime. Salvador and Maya missing entirely from the movie is tragic.

At 61 years old, Gina Gershon is WAY too old to play Moxxi. She would have been a great fit for the role back when Striptease was released in theaters back in 1996. I dunno. Not the biggest character in the first place, and Gershon is a fine enough actress so it's probably alright.

Ariana Greenblatt is our needless race swap for Tiny Tina. At 16 years old she's also a little too old to be playing Tiny Tina, who was only 13 years old in the games. Despite these two issues she does seem to do the character quite a bit of justice.

And I don't really know which Borderlands game this is supposed to be a part of, or if it's a mixture of several of them. I've only ever played Borderlands 2, but I played the hell out of it and it is IMO one of the greatest games ever made. So when they talk about the vault, that's what they were looking for in Borderlands 2. So why the hell isn't Handsome Jack, one of the greatest video game villains ever made in this movie?

Instead they're giving us a made up character in the personification of a company in the games called Atlas, and making the big bad of the movie the CEO of Atlas Corporation named Atlas.

Stupid choice.

And some of the awesome characters that were playable in the 1st game and came back as storyline NPCs in the second game like Mordecai are in this movie either.

Maybe Lionsgate didn't have the budget for doing Bloodwing justice? But it shouldn't have cost all that much because without Handsome Jack in the movie they shouldn't be introducing us to Slagged Bloodwing anyhow, and that's where they'd really be blowing the budget.

At least they didn't leave Scooter out...

Personally, I hope this movie does VERY well. You can't please all the fans, but at least it looks like they actually tried here, which is more than you can say for a lot of the recent video game properties put on film or on streaming services in the last few years.

And in the age of IPs, if this one does well enough, hopefully they get a chance to expand on the universe and they'll have a chance to put Handsome Jack front and center as the main antagonist and make it up to us when they announce Borderlands 2.

Thought it might be an interesting article...

But you start it off like this and you lose me really quick.

COVID-19 drove people to do many wild things. It’s not that surprising, considering the pandemic began with the President of these United States suggesting people get some sun and inject bleach to stave off illness. But of all the toilet seat licking, “Imagine” singing, and anti-vax grifting, perhaps the most surprising thing to happen these awful four years was Cate Blanchett joining the cast of Borderlands. Seriously, what the hell is Lydia Tár doing?

Yeah. Uh... No.

Enjoy the rest of your time working at AV Club, Mr. Schimkowitz. I hope you're saving that money because you don't have that job 5 years from now. It's being done by A/I by then and/or AV Club doesn't exist anymore.

I'll bet Lionsgate wishes right now they did what the fans wanted and used the voice actor who did Claptrap from the games instead of getting Jack Black.

Failing in a theater near you on August 9th.

This is weird I see Lionsgate is going up against...itself.... there is also a remake revampe 'The Crow' Lionsgate now slotted in at the same time period, and a number of review people have said the re-imagining remake is unwatchable.

unless they movie it a few weeks earlier or later to help the Borderlands film?

I don't really see a great future for Borderlands either way.

I was already not pleased with the casting choices and making all the sexy girls being played by women who have already gone through menopause. But they should have just gone with the original voice actor for Clap-Trap instead of paying millions to Jack Black. Everyone was saying that even before the events that have unfolded last month. And really, there was no reason not to use the original voice actor since everybody loved him and he's already done the job at least 4 times before.

I don't imagine that many of the core Borderlands fanbase is going to go out and see this one with all the hate I'm seeing online for the movie from them. So that leaves the normies. I think this movie is probably a little too "weird" for normies who aren't familiar with the franchise.

I've re-titled this thread on 7/30 after having seen on two fairly trustworthy outfits that the budget Lionsgate spent on producing this is $100 Million. (We will revisit this once the movie comes out and we know for sure).

If that number is true, and we should know that soon, I think this one probably makes some money for Lionsgate like A Quiet Place: Day One made some money for Paramount.

As much as I'd love to see this one fail because of the terrible casting choices, a $100 Million budget probably saves it here. It would only need to make $250 Million to break even, and I have a hard time believing that in the middle of summer it won't manage that.

Day One only had a $67 Million budget though, so it will have made a little over $100 Million for Paramount. With the $100 Million budget on Borderlands, Lionsgate is probably not going to see a return that large.

Based off the trailer, the only two they got right were Roland and Tiny Tina.

Clap Trap was the easiest to get right and they blew that. They already had a perfectly excellent voice actor that was loved by the fans but they got Jack Black instead. I'm so old now the kids today don't even know who Jack Black is, so that decision is as puzzling to me as the choice to make every woman in the franchise a card carrying AARP member.

I would have to knock my dad out and drag him to see this movie, but half the cast is way closer to his age than mine.

And what of sequels? Are we witnessing the first time in the last 30 years that a studio wasn't making a movie with the intention of creating more if it was a success?

Forget about Blanchett and Gina Gershon (whom the article seems to forget is in this movie)... How much longer do you suppose Jamie Lee Curtis is going to be with us anyway?

The more I think about this whole thing, the dumber it gets.

Little did he know, that it was about to get a whole lot dumber...

Oh boy.

6% Critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 52 reviews. 0% Top Critics score.

37% All Audience score / 52% verified audience score.

1/2 Star: This movie is absolutely horrible, I'm not sure who it was meant for but it certainly wasn't for the gamers who played and loved the borderlands games.

...

1/2 Star: If you like Borderlands do not waste your money. This is straight up disrespectful and terrible.

...

1/2 Star: I geniuenly think most reviewers are paid because this movie was absolutely horrible and the casting was horrific imo.

...

1/2 It was genuinely the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Nothing to do with the game lore, absolutely horrendous CGI and the worst acting I have seen from Cate Blanchett as well. Genuinely the best part was Claptrap since he looked like he does in the games. That's it. The movie itself felt like I was watching a trailer for 100 minutes. The longest continuous shot was about 15-20 seconds long. The way it was cut felt like some budget music video or something from TikTok, I was surprised there wasn't a subway surfers video playing on the side. Truly a waste of money and time. Out of the four of us that went to see the movie three have played the games, yet even the 4th person said it was terrible. If you liked the movie... I think you may have a problem.

Here's a positive review though:

5 Stars: Fantastic cinema experience, not only did I find a £10 on the floor on the way in, but my phone battery actually INCREASED the longer I sat watching this movie. We could talk about the clunky script, the flat characters, and boring action sequences, but any film that has Kevin Hart in a beret gets a standing ovation from me. Plus, at the end of the day £10 is £10, I’m going to use it to watch Deadpool again….
