I forgot more about refineries and coking plants, plating, cement-making, forging, plastics, industrial cleaning, etc etc then you will EVER learn!
And what I learned was that we in the LA area makes tons -literally- of petrochemicals, from propane to propylene to gasoline to diesel to coke. But if I needed to order SPECIALTY chemicals (calibration standards) like resin monomers or plating surfactants or pesticide precursors I wound up mostly ordering from China. And what I couldn't order from China I had to order from Germany. (Altho I hear the German chemical industry is going kaput.)

You posted about chemicals being down. I'm not very concerned about that. You shouldn't either. It's about demand, nothing else. I've been posting about manufacturing going down globally. As manufacturing comes home demand follows.
