Some people prefer the movie-going experience than watching it at home. Not just some, but a very sizable portion of people.
And once again, Five Nights at Freddy's was available to stream legally on day one for a $5.99 Peacock subscription without spending a further dime on "renting" the movie. Yet it still grossed over $295 Million worldwide on a $20 Million budget, with $157 Million (or more than half) of that coming from an international audience. So no. This is hardly an American-Specific phenomenon.
But I get your argument. With how much food costs under the Biden* Administration even when you're cooking everything at home, it's pure insanity these days to eat out at restaurants with the prices they need to charge to stay afloat. Even with grocery prices as high as they are in 2024, I can still eat for nearly a month on what a family of 5 is going to be set back for one single night out dining.
What's even more perplexing to me is people paying $10 or more to eat dinner at McDonalds for their processed shit that can hardly even be called food legally.
At least you're not paying to be poisoned when you go see a movie. Although I guess depending on what you're choosing to watch you might be letting them poison your mind with Leftist propaganda, which is arguably worse.

Under the Skin failed to make a profit despite universal acclaim by critics, a famous leading actress starring, and not wasting money during filming. It failed in the same way as the last scene: The stand-in for Scarlett Johansson is doused with gasoline by another alien, set on fire and the smoke rises forever while fluffy snowflakes slowly cover the camera lens, obscuring the burning alien-thing that had been Johansson. Not a crowd-pleaser in any way. Apparently, aliens are disposable and flammable same as this movie.

It received numerous accolades and awards, was named the best film of the year by various critics and publications, appeared on many best-of-the-decade lists, and was ranked 61st on the BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century list. It was a box-office failure, grossing around US$7 million on a budget of $13.3 million.
What was the director of Under the Skin next big project? The Zone of Interest about the Nazi commandant of Auschwitz. Another unprofitable project for obvious reasons. If you want a thematic connection between both movies, it is the theme of cremating bodies, which is not a theme that brings crowds to movie theaters.

We're still a little while away from a "final" update on 2023. I'm not going to update it until all the movies on the list are out of theaters for good. Even at that point, I expect the numbers to fluctuate quite a bit until around the midpoint of the year since the international numbers always bounce around. I don't know how many movies from the 2023 list are still in theaters, but I know that at least a few of them like Aquaman 2 and Wonka are, so maybe sometime in mid March?
If I decide to track 2024, I don't think I'll be starting that until about the middle of the year when there are a good deal of movies to track. I also will completely abandon the outdated 2.0x RoT and only track the 2.5x RoT industry standard.

Wonka breaks $550 Million worldwide this weekend with a total gross of $551,828,000.
That's a profit of $239,328,000 so far for WB on this one. Nice way to round of the year there for WB, not only covering the now sub-$100 Million loss on Aquaman 2, but it will likely end up being able to cover the deep losses they're going to experience from their ill advised $100 Million "The Color Purple" remake.
The Color Purple doesn't appear to be doing very well overseas so far. It has quite a few more countries where it will be released in the coming months, but when it grosses only $579k on opening weekend in the UK, which was very likely going to be its biggest international audience, it probably won't do much overseas to save this total flop. Currently, it's made $62,204,000 worldwide on a $100 Million budget. This is a loss of $187,796,000.
Aquaman 2's current loss is $99,898,000, with some gas still left in the tank.
The current combined losses on Aquaman 2 and The Color Purple is $287,694,000, so we're looking at only dipping further into the Barbie profits by $48,366,000 if this were the end of both of their runs, as well as the end of Wonka's run.
If I were a gambling man, I'd bet that Wonka is easily going to be able to cover the losses on both of these movies in the end. Wonka still made $5.6 Million on Weekend 7 in the states with only a -16% drop from the previous weekend.
At 441% Worldwide Gross vs. the Production Budget and more money to come, Wonka is officially a huge box office hit. Though I always said it would make some money, I have to add this to the list of incorrect predictions on my part.
There's probably going to be a few less layoffs than WB expected with this nice end-of-year surprise for them.

I know nothing about it. Jason Statham movies don't interest me.
All I know about it is that it's made its money back and is now up $1.3 Million in profit. And the only reason for this is because MGM is capable of making a movie on a reasonable budget in the 2020s, unlike most other studios out there. Had they spent $100 Million like Lionsgate did on Expendables 4 last year, they'd be starting off 2024 with a huge deficit, and given the fact they hardly make movies anymore, that would not be good for them.
