There's only one reason to float that story, and that's to pin the blame on someone. Trump, specifically, is where they're aiming.
And in that case, given the improbability that "they" would voluntarily reveal a major fuckup in their security, and considering the number of LIES they made up whole cloth about Trump and Russia, this is probably just another lie.

And if not ... well, their history of extensive lying has caught up with them, as it should.
How do we know Charles McGonigal exists? Have you known him in real life? Signym, you have a habit of declaring everything a lie when it works out to be convenient for you. Also, you have powerful attachments to conspiracy theories. Again, the particular conspiracies you believe just so happen to work out to be convenient for you.

How do you know there was a Confederacy? Were you there during the Civil War?

How do you know the climate is changing? Do you have direct, worldwide, centuries-long experience of how the climate was "then" and how it is now?

How do you know what "Trumptards" think? Have you met every single one? In fact, how do you know that anything about me that you CLAIM to know? Have you met me?

Virtually everything you know, you know very, very indirectly. Should you trash everything you know bc you don't have direct experience with it?

I tend to trash what individuals or organizations say when they

have an interest in lying,
a strong history of lying,
when it doesn't make sense, or
when there is no strong corroborating evidence.

In this case, the establishment has no interest in making up some guy - one of "theirs" - who confessed to selling secrets.

But they have a strong proven hx of lying about Trump and trying to smear him as a Russian collaborator.
