“One was President Hoover, and the other was Donald Hoover Trump,” Biden said to laughter. “My predecessor promised to be the greatest job president in history. Well, it didn’t really work out that way. He lost 2 million jobs over the course of his presidency.”
According to Fortune in January 2021, Trump would “become the first post–World War II president to see employment fall during his presidency. It last occurred when Herbert Hoover left office in 1933 amid the early years of the Great Depression.”
Citing Labor Department figures, The Washington Post put the tally at 3 million lost jobs on Trump’s watch.
You know that's fake news.
Did you already forget about the Democrat-China released bioweapon and the two weeks to slow the curve that turned into 2.5 years of Democrat enforced misery?
You guys did that.
And on the flip side, Joe* didn't make any jobs. People were finally allowed to go back to work.

Quote:If racial disparities are innate, then promoters of equality are to blame for society’s ills. Although genetic determinists occasionally pay lip service to the idea of “equal rights,” their core claim is that certain groups of people are better than others. Ultimately this logic leads to the idea that certain “races” are beasts of burden unfit for higher thinking, meant to toil with their hands while their betters take their rightful place as a genetic overclass.

The lure of this logic for the right is obvious: If you want to argue against the state intervening to rectify racial, gender, or economic inequalities, it is simpler to say that the people the state would be helping are biologically inferior, and therefore nothing can realistically be done.
Even for those who lack wealth and status, being a member of a genetic overclass has its appeal: Your dream job? A supermodel-like girlfriend? The jealousy and admiration of your friends and colleagues? You should have all those things, as a white man, except that the Woke State took them from you.
They don't want civil-rights laws that would level the playing field, or policies that would erode the privileges they’ve inherited. Of course if you are really genetically superior, you do not require a society built on that premise. You only seek to create one because, on some level, you know you are not superior.

Oh... look at that. Vox still admits that race is real.
You're still missing the whole point of the problem though, Vox. Black and Latino people aren't fucking stupid. You can only get away with lying to people so long that you give a shit about them before they realize that they're just your pawns. Inflation is real and it's bad. We ARE in a recession and have been for years now though you still don't admit that fact. People at the bottom are feeling this worse than any of you fucking goons writing articles and taking polls, and disproportionately the blacks and Latinos that typically vote Democrat are a large part of that base that has had their lives become much harder during this failed administration.
And on the flip-side:

A neuroscientist explains why stupidity is an existential threat to America
by Bobby Azarian, Raw Story
https://www.rawstory.com/raw-investigates/dunning-kruger-effect/
It may sound like an insensitive statement, but the cold hard truth is that there are a lot of stupid people in the world, and their stupidity presents a constant danger to others. Some of these people are in positions of power, and some of them have been elected to run our country. A far greater number of them do not have positions of power, but they still have the power to vote, and the power to spread their ideas. We may have heard of “collective intelligence,” but there is also “collective stupidity,” and it is a force with equal influence on the world. It would not be a stretch to say that at this point in time, stupidity presents an existential threat to America because, in some circles, it is being celebrated.
Although the term "stupidity" may seem derogatory or insulting, it is actually a scientific concept that refers to a specific type of cognitive failure. It is important to realize that stupidity is not simply a lack of intelligence or knowledge, but rather a failure to use one's cognitive abilities effectively. This means that you can be “smart” while having a low IQ, or no expertise in anything. It is often said that “you can’t fix stupid,” but that is not exactly true. By becoming aware of the limitations of our natural intelligence or our ignorance, we can adjust our reasoning, behavior, and decision-making to account for our intellectual shortcomings.
To demonstrate that stupidity does not mean having a low IQ, consider the case of Richard Branson, the billionaire CEO of Virgin Airlines, who is one of the world’s most successful businessmen. Branson has said that he was seen as the dumbest person in school, and has admitted to having dyslexia, a learning disability that affects one’s ability to read and correctly interpret written language. But it wasn’t just reading comprehension that was the problem — “Math just didn’t make sense to me,” Branson has said. “I would certainly have failed an IQ test.”
So, what is responsible for his enormous success, both financially and in terms of being a prolific innovator? Branson attributes his success to surrounding himself with highly knowledgeable and extremely competent people. Branson’s smarts come from his ability to recognize his own limitations, and to know when to defer to others on topics or tasks where he lacks sufficient knowledge or skill.
This means you don’t have to be traditionally intelligent or particularly knowledgeable to be successful in life, make good decisions, have good judgment, and be a positive influence on the world. Stupidity is a consequence of a failure to be aware of one’s own limitations, and this type of cognitive failure has a scientific name: the Dunning-Kruger effect.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is a well-known psychological phenomenon that describes the tendency for individuals to overestimate their level of intelligence, knowledge, or competence in a particular area. They may also simultaneously misjudge the intelligence, expertise, or competence of others. In other words, they are ignorant of their own ignorance. The effect has been widely written about, and investigated empirically, with hundreds of studies published in peer-reviewed journals confirming and analyzing the phenomenon, particularly in relation to the dangers it poses in certain contexts.
It is easy to think of examples in which failing to recognize one’s own ignorance can become dangerous. Take for example when people with no medical training try to provide medical advice. It doesn’t take much Internet searching to find some nutritionist from the “alternative medicine” world who is claiming that so

The unchanging malleability of Donald Trump
Everyone should know his playbook by now. We should know that Trump will
1) flood the zone with things that are burbling on the right-wing fringe,
2) make sweeping promises without much follow-through and
3) reject any criticism out of hand, spinning it into a reason to praise himself.
And so it was with his interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday.
One of only a few interviews with a traditional news outlet since he announced his 2024 candidacy last November, the discussion began precisely as his 2015 announcement at Trump Tower had begun: He would make America great again in part by repelling the hordes of criminal immigrants flooding into the country.
“They come from prisons. They come from mental institutions, insane asylums,” he said as he was answering the first question from host Kristen Welker. “They say, ‘Sir, please don’t use that term,’ but it’s true.”
As was the case eight years ago, this is not generally true. Some of those seeking to enter the country may have criminal records or even mental illness, of course, but there’s no indication that this constitutes a significant component of those seeking asylum or work in the United States. It’s almost certainly true that the universe of people who have served in senior positions on Trump’s political campaigns is more densely populated with accused criminals than the pool of recent immigrants.
Welker didn’t push back on this claim, in large part because Trump quickly moved on to another bit of patter. Flooding the zone.
She did offer some resistance to his attempt to present the film “2000 Mules” as a legitimate indictment of the 2020 election. Created by Dinesh D’Souza, recipient of one of Trump’s first presidential pardons, the film’s allegations of drop-box-stuffing have been completely eviscerated. When Trump told Welker, for example, that “we have thousands of essentially motion pictures of people stuffing the ballot boxes,” he’s referring to a common belief about the movie that is entirely false. The movie shows only a few examples of someone casting more than one vote at a drop box; none has been shown to have been illegal. One clip, described in the film as committing a crime, was determined to have depicted a man legally adding the ballots of family members. That man is now suing D’Souza.
Welker rejected Trump’s assertion, eager to move on to a different subject. There was probably a way for someone well-versed in the arcana of the allegations to push back harder on Trump’s claims; it’s very safe to assume that his ability to defend the movie is untested and flimsy. But this would almost certainly have simply led to Trump shifting the goal posts somewhere else, until he made a claim that his interviewer didn’t rebut. Falsehoods and conspiracy theories will always find a sturdy enough foundation on which they can rest.
Once you hand Trump a megaphone, he’s going to do with it what he wants. He knows how to use it. This is why it’s better to pretape his interviews, allowing for obvious dishonesties such as the one about “2000 Mules” to be elided or presented with context. For whatever reason, despite taping the interview in advance, NBC chose not to make such edits.
Welker did present Trump with questions about his past actions and future plans. The results were unsatisfying.
Consider Trump’s answer to questions about his efforts to subvert the 2020 election. Welker noted that he’d been told by numerous people, including “the most senior lawyers in your own administration,” that the election was over and he’d lost. She asked why he instead turned to outside attorneys, referring to Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and others.
“You hire them, you never met these people. You get a recommendation,” Trump said. “They turn out to be RINOs” — Republicans in name only — “or they turn out to be not so good. In many cases, I didn’t respect them. But I did respect others. I respected many others that said the election was rigged.”
Later, she asked him if, should he win i

On October 3, the Supreme Court will hear a case where the far-right United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit declared an entire federal agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, unconstitutional.
In the unlikely event that the justices uphold this decision, a brief filed by the banking industry explains to the Supreme Court, the entire US mortgage market could seize up, as banks will have no idea what rules they need to comply with in order to issue loans.
And this case, known as CFPB v. Community Financial Services Association, is one of at least six cases the Court will most likely decide this term where Fifth Circuit judges issued legally indefensible decisions that will have calamitous results if they are not reversed. That court, which is dominated by the most reactionary Trump appointees and similarly minded judges, has become the forum of choice for litigants pushing preposterous legal arguments that are unlikely to fly elsewhere, even in a very conservative judiciary.
By next June, the Supreme Court is likely to toss out a Fifth Circuit decision nuking the federal government’s power to prevent companies from defrauding investors. It is also likely to reverse a Fifth Circuit decision holding that people who are subject to domestic violence restraining orders — meaning that a court has determined that they are a violent threat to their romantic partner or their partner’s child — have a constitutional right to possess a gun.
And, on top of these three cases, which the Court has already agreed to hear in its upcoming term, it will also likely take up three other cases where the Fifth Circuit took leave of its senses. These include Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, which attempts to ban the abortion medication mifepristone; Doe v. Mckesson, which effectively strips political organizers of their First Amendment right to organize a protest; and NetChoice v. Paxton, which allows Texas’s GOP-controlled legislature to seize control of content moderation at social media sites like Twitter or YouTube.
At least for now, in other words, the Court’s upcoming term could potentially be very different from the two that proceeded it, where the Court’s GOP-appointed majority seemed to be on a mission to seek out longstanding precedents that are out of favor within the Republican Party, and destroy them. Those decisions appear to have emboldened the most reactionary voices within the judiciary, leaving the justices with a whole lot of messes to clean up.
Which is not to say that Democrats will have much to celebrate when the justices leave town again next June. Many of the Fifth Circuit’s decisions are so poorly reasoned, and so destructive of the interests of the United States, that it would be genuinely shocking if a majority of the justices sign onto them. The Supreme Court will deserve no credit for moderation simply for reversing these decisions.
That is, if it does reverse them. The Supreme Court is still dominated by conservative Republicans, three of whom were appointed by Donald Trump. So there’s always some risk that a majority of the justices will accept even the most outlandish arguments by their fellow Republican appointees on the Fifth Circuit.
Meanwhile, the Court will hear at least one case, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, involving a legal doctrine reviled by the conservative Federalist Society. Loper Bright asks the justices to overrule something known as the “Chevron doctrine,” which limits the power of the federal judiciary (which is currently controlled by the Republican Party) to overrule decisions made by the executive branch (which is currently led by a Democrat).
Additionally, the Court will hear cases that could weaken many civil rights laws, and that could invigorate racial gerrymandering. And it’s likely that the Court will take up one or more cases involving state laws that target transgender youth before the upcoming term is complete.
Even so, it’s hard to miss just how much the Fifth Circuit looms over the justices’ upcoming term. And, whi

you're going to come up with a number of weeks or months
people are starting to think of 15 weeks
DeSanctus is willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban
six months, seven months, eight months
a number of weeks or months or however you want to define it
the number of weeks is much more important
something will happen with the number of weeks
Mike Pence said something about 15 weeks too
now all of a sudden he's saying 15 weeks
It's going to be a number of weeks
There is a number, and there’s a number that's going to be agreed to
you will win on this issue when you come up with the right number of weeks
the seventh month or the ninth month or after birth
Trump is obsessed with the notion that he can get the whole country together on abortion by choosing just the right number of weeks when it becomes illegal. Needless to say, there are a limited number of choices here, from 0 to 39, nearly all of which have been discussed at one point or another. And guess what? There's no agreement!

Alternatively, what about an America where there is public housing for everyone? Homeowners (who just happen to vote) would hate to have these low-cost apartments built in their neighborhoods because of the low-quality/low-income people who move into them. Existing apartment owners would hate it, also.

Alternatively, what about an America where there is public housing for everyone? Homeowners (who just happen to vote) would hate to have these low-cost apartments built in their neighborhoods because of the low-quality/low-income people who move into them. Existing apartment owners would hate it, also.

But what the illegals could do is cause a shortage of motel rooms and an increase in prices for those rooms. As of December 31, 2020, the lodging industry in the United States consisted of roughly 5.29 million hotel rooms. There are plenty of empty rooms for illegal aliens.

House GOP in open warfare over doomed spending plan
One Republican summed up the situation neatly as leadership-empowered negotiators faceplanted with days to go before a shutdown: “It’s a mess.”
As House Republicans began ripping apart their party’s latest spending proposal on a conference call their own leaders held to promote it, the plan’s two main defenders had to hang up the phone. They had flights to catch.
Reps. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), who represented centrists, and Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who negotiated for conservatives, thought they had found a deal that would at least unite the fractious GOP — even if it couldn’t pass the Senate and avert a shutdown. Minutes after Johnson and Donalds left that Sunday night conference call, however, their work imploded, with a half-dozen House conservatives railing against it.
More than a dozen Republicans, mostly Donalds’ colleagues in the conservative Freedom Caucus, are publicly torching the spending plan he brokered. With just a four-seat majority, Speaker Kevin McCarthy can only afford to lose a handful of them given that he can’t count on Democratic votes — leaving the GOP bill effectively dead.
But beneath the surface, things are even worse for McCarthy this time around. The faceplant by the two negotiators he’d empowered has exposed a full-on House Republican rebellion that’s officially underway.
It’s bigger than a clash between the centrist and right wings of the party. The Freedom Caucus itself is divided, with many members swatting down a plan backed by their own leader. Many of those conservatives are now openly threatening to try to oust McCarthy if he relies on Democratic votes to avoid a shutdown, but they’re also withholding their support from the only Republican plan on paper.

An out-of-control GOP is the party of nonstop national crisis
Stop me if you’ve heard this one, but congressional Republicans are once again careening toward internal crisis and a damaging government shutdown.
You may remember this song-and-dance from the last four or five times the party’s hard-line Freedom Caucus members held America’s economy hostage.
In the past, Republican leaders managed by the slimmest of margins to avert financial catastrophe by working with Democrats to pass temporary funding bills. This time it isn’t even clear they can achieve that minimum level of competence.
It isn’t even clear that a sizable minority of Republican lawmakers want to keep the government open. Freedom Caucus stalwarts including Reps. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) dismissed McCarthy’s proposal out of hand without even attempting to offer an alternative. Luna, who recently gave birth and is still in the hospital, went so far as to say she’d leave her recovery bed in order to guarantee McCarthy’s continuing resolution fails.
Luna offers the perfect visual of the current GOP: A lawmaker willing to drag herself out of a hospital bed in order to ensure the federal government does not function.

Your personal insults have nothing to do with the numbers.
Your article is a lie and a cope.
Republicans barely won that race in 2020 during the Presidential election. It was a nail-biter with only a 0.4% difference in votes, and hardly the definition of a Republican "stronghold", so losing it with an even-playing field during a Presidential election would have meant nothing, let alone the clown-show that happened last night.
All the fact that Democrats were able to out-fund the Republican running against them in a special election on September 19th of an off-year by 9,200% with out-of-state donor money and still only manage to win that election by 331 votes out of 2,811 people that voted means that Republicans dropped the ball again and had better figure out how to spend money wisely. They could have easily won that election with only $50k spent on promoting Rafter's competition instead of leaving him high and dry with only $500 in his campaign. $500 will buy you a movie night and dinner for two in New Hampshire in 2023.
This was a bellwether of nothing.

Republicans aren’t serious about border security. When the House Freedom Caucus put out its demands for a budget bill, one of them was the passage of border legislation.
The stopgap bill includes a House-passed border security proposal that orders construction of the border wall to resume, boosts the ranks of Border Patrol agents and tightens asylum rules. The plan included in the continuing resolution, though, leaves out a provision of the immigration bill related to E-Verify, which allows employers to confirm the eligibility of employees to work in the U.S. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/house-republicans-put-forth-short-term-de
al-to-fund-government/
Of course it leaves out E-Verify. Republican border plans include lots of crowd-pleasing provisions that have little prospect of working (more walls, more agents, etc.) while leaving out the one thing that works: E-Verify. E-Verify is the answer to our old-fashioned problem of illegal immigrants: if they can't prove they're legally allowed to work, they can't get hired. If they get hired anyway, the company that did it is liable for big fines. That would work.
Business Republicans know that more border walls are just hot air, so they don't object to Donald Trump and his acolytes using them to feed the base some red meat. But E-Verify? That would actually constrain their ability to hire undocumented workers—and that's why Republicans stay quiet about it.

The reason the Democrats won that special election was what I stated it was. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Nobody even knew there was an election in the first place, with less than 3,000 people even bothering to show up. And the article lied and called that a "Republican Stronghold" that Trump should be worried about when he only carried it by 0.4% in 2020.
The article was a flat out lie and a cope.

The budget plan of the Republican Study Committee envisions huge cuts to Medicaid, large but unspecified cuts to non-military discretionary spending, and an increase in the Social Security retirement age to offset the cost of large regressive tax cuts.
Those are the concrete stakes of the upcoming election.
Donald Trump disavowed the Social Security component of this plan. But I would not particularly trust him on that. He violated campaign promises to protect Medicaid during his last presidency and might flip-flop on the Social Security issue if that’s what his allies in Congress want.

Why Kevin McCarthy Can’t Do His Job
Sept. 21, 2023, 7:00 p.m. ET
The speaker of the House is the only congressional officer mentioned in the Constitution, other than a temporary Senate officer to preside when the vice president can’t. The speaker’s job isn’t defined, but surely it includes passing legislation that keeps the federal government running.
But Kevin McCarthy, the current speaker, isn’t doing that job. Indeed, at this point it’s hard to see how he can pass any bill maintaining federal funding, let alone one the Senate, controlled by Democrats, will agree to. So we seem to be headed for a federal shutdown at the end of this month, with many important government activities suspended until further notice.
Why? McCarthy is a weak leader, especially compared with Nancy Pelosi, his formidable predecessor. But even a superb leader would probably be unable to transcend the dynamics of a party that has been extremist for a generation but has now gone beyond extremism to nihilism.
And yes, this is a Republican problem. Any talk about dysfunction in “Congress,” or “partisanship,” simply misinforms the public. Crises like the one McCarthy now faces didn’t happen under Pelosi, even though she also had a very narrow majority. I’ll come back to that contrast. First, let me make a different comparison — between the looming shutdown of 2023 and the shutdowns of 1995-96, when Newt Gingrich was speaker.
If you had told me back then that I’d someday hold up Gingrich as a model of rationality, I wouldn’t have believed you. But hear me out.
Back in 1995, while Gingrich’s tactics — his willingness to employ blackmail as a political strategy — were new and dangerous, he had an actual policy goal: He wanted to force major cuts in federal spending.
Furthermore, Gingrich tried to go where the money was. The federal government is an insurance company with an army: The great bulk of nonmilitary spending is on the big safety-net programs, that is, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. And Gingrich in fact sought deep cuts in Medicare and Medicaid.
He didn’t get them, and the government’s role in promoting health insurance coverage eventually expanded greatly — although Medicare has been surprisingly successful at containing costs. Still, Gingrich’s goals were at least coherent.
McCarthy, in his desperate efforts to appease his party’s hard-liners, has acted as if their refusal to approve federal funding is a Gingrich-like demand for reduced federal spending. He tried to pass a continuing resolution — a bill that would temporarily keep the money flowing — that involved deep cuts to certain parts of the federal government.
But there are three notable aspects to this attempt. First, even if he had managed to pass that resolution, it would have been dead on arrival in the Senate.
Second, unlike Gingrich back then, McCarthy tried to go where the money isn’t, slashing nonmilitary discretionary spending. That’s a fairly small part of the federal budget. It’s also a spending category that has already been subject to more than a decade of austerity, ever since President Barack Obama made concessions to Republicans during the debt ceiling confrontation of 2011. There just isn’t any significant blood to be gotten out of this stone.
Finally, even this extreme proposal wasn’t extreme enough for Republican hard-liners. I liked what one representative told Politico: “Some of these folks would vote against the Bible because there’s not enough Jesus in it.” The point is that the party’s right wing isn’t actually interested in governing; it’s all about posturing, and the budget fight is a temper tantrum rather than a policy dispute.
If the G.O.P. were anything like a normal party, McCarthy would give up on the right-wingers, gather up the saner Republican representatives — it would be misleading to call them “moderates” — and make a deal with Democrats. But that would almost surely cost him the speakership, and in general more or less the whole G.O.P. is terrified of the hard-liners, so the party’s p

The Left did not think that. We all knew how Trumptards react from years of experience. No matter what was revealed about Trump during his Presidency, the Trumptards were unconcerned. So why would Trumptards suddenly change after his Presidency was over? When Hitler made millions of Jews vanish, did Nazis turn away in disgust? They did not. What they suspected made them love Adolph even more. Why are Trumptards any different about Donald's peccadilloes? They love him even more.

“Hitler Said That Too”: Donald Trump Claims Jews Destroyed America
Donald Trump, during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, has made some highly controversial comments about Jews.
Trump seized the occasion of Rosh Hashanah to attack Jews who voted for Biden. He wrote: “Just a quick reminder for liberal Jews who voted to destroy America [and] Israel because you believed in false narratives! Let’s hope you learned from your mistake [and] make better choices moving forward.”

How General Mark Milley protected the Constitution from Donald Trump
The missiles that comprise the land component of America’s nuclear triad are scattered across thousands of square miles of prairie and farmland, mainly in North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. About 150 of the roughly 400 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles currently on alert are dispersed in a wide circle around Minot Air Force Base, in the upper reaches of North Dakota. From Minot, it would take an ICBM about 25 minutes to reach Moscow.
These nuclear weapons are under the control of the 91st Missile Wing of the Air Force Global Strike Command, and it was to the 91st—the “Rough Riders”—that General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, paid a visit in March 2021. I accompanied him on the trip. A little more than two months had passed since the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and America’s nuclear arsenal was on Milley’s mind.
In normal times, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the principal military adviser to the president, is supposed to focus his attention on America’s national-security challenges, and on the readiness and lethality of its armed forces. But the first 16 months of Milley’s term, a period that ended when Joe Biden succeeded Donald Trump as president, were not normal, because Trump was exceptionally unfit to serve. “For more than 200 years, the assumption in this country was that we would have a stable person as president,” one of Milley’s mentors, the retired three-star general James Dubik, told me. That this assumption did not hold true during the Trump administration presented a “unique challenge” for Milley, Dubik said.
Milley was careful to refrain from commenting publicly on Trump’s cognitive unfitness and moral derangement. In interviews, he would say that it is not the place of the nation’s flag officers to discuss the performance of the nation’s civilian leaders.
But his views emerged in a number of books published after Trump left office, written by authors who had spoken with Milley, and many other civilian and military officials, on background. In The Divider, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser write that Milley believed that Trump was “shameful,” and “complicit” in the January 6 attack. They also reported that Milley feared that Trump’s “ ‘Hitler-like’ embrace of the big lie about the election would prompt the president to seek out a ‘Reichstag moment.’ ”
These views of Trump align with those of many officials who served in his administration. Trump’s first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, considered Trump to be a “fucking moron.” John Kelly, the retired Marine general who served as Trump’s chief of staff in 2017 and 2018, has said that Trump is the “most flawed person” he’s ever met. James Mattis, who is also a retired Marine general and served as Trump’s first secretary of defense, has told friends and colleagues that the 45th president was “more dangerous than anyone could ever imagine.” It is widely known that Trump’s second secretary of defense, Mark Esper, believed that the president didn’t understand his own duties, much less the oath that officers swear to the Constitution, or military ethics, or the history of America.
The difficulty of the task before Milley was captured most succinctly by Lieutenant General H. R. McMaster, the second of Trump’s four national security advisers. “As chairman, you swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, but what if the commander in chief is undermining the Constitution?” McMaster said to me.
For the actions he took in the last months of the Trump presidency, Milley, whose four-year term as chairman, and 43-year career as an Army officer, will conclude at the end of September, has been condemned by elements of the far right. Kash Patel, whom Trump installed in a senior Pentagon role in the final days of his administration, refers to Milley as “the Kraken of the swamp.” Trump himself has accused Milley of treason. Do you want more crooks like Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court? Elect Trump in 2024.
Clarence Thomas’ Latest Pay-to-Play Scandal Finally Connects All the Dots
Sept 23, 2023 8:30 AM
ProPublica released a new report on Friday detailing Justice Clarence Thomas’ close relationship with the Koch brothers with previously undisclosed and extraordinarily damning new details. https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-secretly-attended-k
och-brothers-donor-events-scotus
According to ProPublica, the justice developed a friendship with the Kochs as they were funneling hundreds of millions of dollars into right-wing causes, many of which ended up before the Supreme Court. The brothers then used Thomas to raise money for their sprawling network, inviting him to speak at “donor events” that brought in millions of dollars. He disclosed none of these activities on his annual disclosure forms, an obvious violation of federal ethics law.

Clarence's unique spin on crookedness is that he takes bribes in exchange for favorable Supreme Court decisions. He has the temerity to deny what he is obviously doing. Clarence should be Trump's Vice-President, since they are two of a kind.

And to what end? It isn't even a partisan issue. It's not as if Joe Biden would get a surge in the polls if Republicans got themselves vaccinated, after all. It's just a completely craven attempt to spread a dangerous conspiracy theory in service of undermining support for government services of any kind.

Republicans want nothing and nobody to interfere with a conservative movement that can only exist amid a huge web of lies. Vaccinations are unsafe. Trump won the election. Climate change is a hoax. Joe Biden is a crook. Voter fraud in Democratic cities is endemic. January 6 was a peaceful demonstration. COVID originated with a Chinese lab leak. The FBI has been weaponized against Republicans. Social media is a liberal cesspool.
The reason that disinformation fighters spend a lot of time on Republican lies is that Republicans lie a lot. It's that simple.

With a disruptive government shutdown just days away, Washington is in the grip of an ultraconservative minority that sees the federal government as a threat to the republic, a dangerous monolith to be broken apart with little regard for the consequences. They have styled themselves as a wrecking crew aimed at the nation’s institutions on a variety of fronts.
They are eager to impeach the president and even oust their own Speaker of the House of Representatives if he doesn’t accede to their every demand. They have refused to allow their own party to debate a Pentagon spending bill or approve routine military promotions — a striking posture given that unflinching support for the armed forces has long been a bedrock of Republican orthodoxy.
Defying the G.O.P.’s longstanding reputation as the party of law and order, they have pledged to handcuff the F.B.I. and throttle the Justice Department. Members of the party of Ronald Reagan refused to meet with a wartime ally, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, this week when he visited the Capitol and want to eliminate assistance to his country, a democratic nation under siege from an autocratic aggressor.
And they are unbowed by guardrails that in past decades forced consensus even in the most extreme of conflicts; this is the same bloc that balked at raising the debt ceiling in the spring to avert a federal debt default.
“There is a group of Republican members who seem to feel there is no limit at all as to how you can wreck the system,” said Ross K. Baker, a professor of political science at Rutgers University. “There are no boundaries, no forbidden zones. They go where relatively junior members have feared to tread in the past.”

Is America uniquely vulnerable to tyranny?
By Zack Beauchamp, Sep 24, 2023
In The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew are forced to navigate a strait bounded by two equally dangerous obstacles: Scylla, a six-headed sea serpent, and Charybdis, an underwater horror that sucks down ships through a massive whirlpool. Judging Charybdis to be a greater danger to the crew as a whole, Odysseus orders his crew to try and pass through on Scylla’s side. They make it, but six sailors are eaten in the crossing.
In their new book Tyranny of the Minority, Harvard political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt — the authors of How Democracies Die — argue America’s founders faced an analogous problem: navigating between two types of dictatorship that threatened to devour the new country.
The founders, per Levitsky and Ziblatt, were myopically focused on one of them: the fear of a majority-backed demagogue seizing power. As a result, they made it exceptionally difficult to pass new laws and amend the constitution. But the founders, the pair argues, lost sight of a potentially more dangerous monster on the other side of the strait: a determined minority abusing this system to impose its will on the democratic majority.
“By steering the republic so sharply away from the Scylla of majority tyranny, America’s founders left it vulnerable to the Charybdis of minority rule,” they write.
This is not a hypothetical fear. According to Levitsky and Ziblatt, today’s America is currently being sucked down the anti-democratic whirlpool.
The Republican Party, they argue, has become an anti-democratic institution, its traditional leadership cowed by Trump and a racially reactionary base. As such, it is increasingly willing to twist legal tools designed to check oppressive majorities into tools for imposing its policy preferences on an unwilling majority. The best way out of this dilemma, in their view, is radical legal constitutional reform that brings the American system more in line with other advanced democracies.
Tyranny of the Minority is an exceptionally persuasive book. I think it is almost inarguably correct about both the nature of the modern Republican Party and the ways in which it exploits America’s rickety Constitution to subvert its democracy. I come to some similar conclusions in my own forthcoming book on democracy, The Reactionary Spirit (which, full disclosure, has benefited significantly from Levitsky’s feedback in drafting).

In 1803’s Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court gave itself expansive power to strike down legislation that was not explicitly granted in the Constitution. More recently, the filibuster emerged as a de facto 60-vote requirement for passing legislation in the Senate — a practice similar to the supermajority vote that the founders explicitly rejected early on.
Levitsky and Ziblatt show that almost every other peer democracy went in the opposite direction.
The United States is “the only presidential democracy in the world in which the president is elected via an Electoral College,” “one of the few remaining democracies that retains a bicameral legislature with a powerful upper chamber,” and “the only democracy in the world with lifetime tenure for Supreme Court justices.” Moreover, they note, “the U.S. Constitution is the hardest in the world to change” — making it extremely difficult for reformers to do anything about America’s minority-empowering institutions.
These institutions allow the Republican Party to rule despite being a distinctly minority faction — one that holds extreme positions on issues like taxes and abortion, and has lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections.
So long as the party retains appeal among a hard core of racially resentful supporters, efficiently distributed around the country to take advantage of the Senate and Electoral College’s biases, it can remain nationally competitive. The right’s control over the Supreme Court will likely last decades, thanks to lifetime tenure, allowing it to remake American policy and institutions with impunity. The GOP’s disproportionate national power enables its cadres at the state and local level to pursue explicitly undemocratic policies for holding power, like extreme gerrymandering, without fear of federal intervention.
Hence the titular “tyranny of the minority”: The Republican Party, having broken with its core commitment to democracy, has now embraced a peculiarly American strategy for taking and wielding power undemocratically.
“America’s countermajoritarian institutions can manufacture authoritarian minorities into governing majorities,” they write. “Far from checking authoritarian power, our institutions have begun to augment it.”
The best way to safeguard America’s institutions is to make them more like our peers abroad: abolish the Electoral College, eliminate lifetime tenure for Supreme Court justices, end the filibuster, switch to proportional representation in Congress, ban partisan gerrymandering, and make the Constitution easier to amend.

Mark Milley, who led perhaps the most embarrassing moment in American history with his grossly incompetent implementation of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, costing many lives, leaving behind hundreds of American citizens, and handing over BILLIONS of dollars of the finest military equipment ever made, will be leaving the military next week. This will be a time for all citizens of the USA to celebrate! They are a true threat to Democracy and are, in fact, THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE! The Fake News Media should pay a big price for what they have done to our once great Country!

That's not at all what your post below said. Do you have a post from Trump that says this and you forgot to put it here?
No. I read it. You're making inferences that weren't implied, and scare-mongering.

He wasn't a lying sack of shit. But he was still a piece of shit. He's one of the reasons this country is so politically charged today. His hateful rhetoric and one-sided bias on everything has become the normal at every media outfit in the country today. He wrote the playbook that they're all following now. I said before in a thread that you were a part of that I'd piss on his grave. You know this.

Trump is up 1.6 points in the aggregate today.
On August 24th, the day of Trump's latest sham arrest, it was Biden 45 / Trump 43 on the polling aggregate. Today it is Trump 45.7 / Biden 44.1.
It should also be noted that since polling for the 2024 Presidential election began late last year, Joe Biden* has NEVER ONCE had an average as high as 45.7 in the aggregate.

On August 24th, the day of Trump's latest sham arrest, the betting odds were Biden 35 / Trump 27.3, or a 7.7 point difference. Today they are Biden 31.5 / Trump 30.1, or a 1.4 point difference.

The early months of the GOP primary have shown that there is no moving on from Donald Trump, no chance of salvaging the warped political party in his thrall. The 2020 presidential election drove the U.S. to the brink of disaster; a change in presidential leadership did nothing to maneuver us away from the precipice. Now, it feels like we’re once again teetering on the edge of something incredibly dangerous, in ways that seem almost certain to hasten democratic collapse, with little choice but to go through the motions.
Oh... ditch the melodrama (and the Adderall) and fuckin' relax, idiots.
Biden*'s presidency* has been a never-ending string of catastrophes, but we'll survive it.

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday completely — and hilariously — destroyed one of Republicans’ main arguments to prove that Joe Biden is corrupt.
Republicans launched an impeachment inquiry into Biden, after months of insisting that the president is guilty of criminal wrongdoing. The GOP has yet to produce any actual evidence of their claims. But one of their main talking points is that Poroshenko fired former Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin after Biden pressured him to do so.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade played Poroshenko a clip of Shokin saying Biden wanted him fired because he had been investigating the oil company Burisma Holdings while Hunter Biden served on the board.
“First of all, this is a completely crazy person,” Poroshenko replied without hesitation, referring to Shokin. “This is something wrong with him. Second, there is not one single word of truth.”
“Please do not use such a person like Shokin to undermine the trust we feel” from both U.S. parties, he continued.
Poroshenko added that Shokin was fired because “he played very dirty games.”
Shokin was fired in 2016 for corruption. Three years later, Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani started a conspiracy theory that the Biden family accepted a $10 million bribe to remove Shokin to stop a probe into Hunter Biden’s role at Burisma. This claim has been repeatedly debunked by the owner of Burisma, Mykola Zlochevsky, as well as Giuliani’s associate Lev Parnas. And now, the former Ukrainian president himself.

When Trump implies that Milley deserves to be put to death, some of his disciples will take it as an order. The number of those who take action does not have to be large for the result to be horrific.
Trump's rhetoric is dangerous, not just because it is the exact sort that incites violence against public officials, but also because it shows just how numb the country has grown toward threats more typical of broken, authoritarian regimes.
To view each of Trump's calls to violence in isolation -- 'he attacked Milley,' or 'he attacked NBC,' or 'he attacked the jury, the prosecutor, the judge' -- is to miss his overall plan to introduce violence as a natural extension of disagreement.
The increasing attacks by Trump are vile and ought to be condemned by all but they won't be. It's become a contagious disease, and Trump is patient zero.

Trump breaks with McCarthy, pushing Republicans to shut down the government
The former president endorses the tactics of far-right GOP members, telling them to force a shutdown unless Democrats give them “EVERYTHING” in negotiations.
“The Republicans lost big on Debt Ceiling, got NOTHING, and now are worried that they will be BLAMED for the Budget Shutdown. Wrong!!! Whoever is President will be blamed,” Trump wrote, adding: “UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN! Close the Border, stop the Weaponization of ‘Justice,’ and End Election Interference.”
I wonder who is stupid enough to blame Democrats when Trump demands Republicans shut down the government? “The Republicans are worried that they will be BLAMED for the Budget Shutdown. Wrong!!! Whoever is President will be blamed.”

The Sick, Racist Message Behind Why Trump Chose That Particular Gun Store
Donald Trump tried to purchase a gun at the Palmetto State Armory in South Carolina. That matters more than you think.
During a campaign trip to South Carolina, Donald Trump took some time to visit the gun store that sold weapons to the racist Jacksonville, Florida, mass shooter.
Trump visited Palmetto State Armory on Monday, where he admired a handgun engraved and decorated in his honor. He repeatedly said he wanted to buy a gun there—which would be a violation of federal law given his many indictments.
A lot of the media has focused on whether Trump actually purchased a gun and violated the law, but less attention has been paid to Trump’s decision to visit Palmetto State Armory, as opposed to any other gun store in South Carolina.
In late August, a white man opened fire in a Dollar General store in a predominantly Black Jacksonville neighborhood, killing three people, all of whom were Black. The shooter, who then killed himself, used a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, at least one of which was painted with a swastika. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said the shooter “hated Black people” and acted alone.
At least one of the guns came from Palmetto State Armory, a store in Summerville, South Carolina. The Jacksonville sheriff’s office shared photos of the firearms used in the attack on its Facebook page. One of the guns is clearly engraved with the Palmetto State Armory logo. The shooter had also drawn swastikas on the gun.

A judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House.
Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling in a civil lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, found that the former president and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing.
Engoron ordered that some of Trump’s business licenses be rescinded as punishment, making it difficult or impossible for them to do business in New York, and said he would continue to have an independent monitor oversee the Trump Organization’s operations.
A Trump spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling. Trump has long insisted he did nothing wrong.
The decision, days before the start of a non-jury trial in Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit, is the strongest repudiation yet of Trump’s carefully coiffed image as a wealthy and shrewd real estate mogul turned political powerhouse.
Beyond mere bragging about his riches, Trump, his company and key executives repeatedly lied about them on his annual financial statements, reaping rewards such as favorable loan terms and lower insurance premiums, Engoron found.
Those tactics crossed a line and violated the law, the judge said, rejecting Trump’s contention that a disclaimer on the financial statements absolved him of any wrongdoing.
“In defendants’ world: rent regulated apartments are worth the same as unregulated apartments; restricted land is worth the same as unrestricted land; restrictions can evaporate into thin air; a disclaimer by one party casting responsibility on another party exonerates the other party’s lies,” Engoron wrote in his 35-page ruling. “That is a fantasy world, not the real world.”

Milley says the military doesn’t swear oath to a ‘wannabe dictator’ in apparent swipe at Trump
“We are unique among the world’s militaries,” Milley said. “We don’t take an oath to a country, we don’t take an oath to a tribe, we don’t take an oath to a religion. We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, or a tyrant or a dictator.”
“And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator,” he spat. “We take an oath to the Constitution and we take an oath to the idea that is America – and we’re willing to die to protect it.” But are you willing to kill the wannabe dictator? The wannabe dictator said that Milley should die for being a traitor. Milley should have made clear what he would do about the wannabe dictator. Alas, he did not.
“It is that document that all of us in uniform swear to protect and defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Milley said, emphasizing the words “all” in “all enemies” and the “and” between “foreign and domestic.”

Arguments about the proper role of virtue in the public square or arguments over the proper balance between order and liberty, are helpless in the face of prophecies, like the declarations from Christian “apostles” that Donald Trump is God’s appointed leader, destined to save the nation from destruction. Sometimes there’s no need for a prophet to deliver the message. Instead, Christians will claim that the Holy Spirit spoke to them directly. As one longtime friend told me, “David, I was with you on opposing Trump until the Holy Spirit told me that God had appointed him to lead.”
Several weeks ago, I wrote about the “rage and joy” of MAGA America. Outsiders see the rage and hatred directed at them and miss that a key part of Trump’s appeal is the joy and fellowship that Trump supporters feel with each other. But there’s one last element that cements that bond with Trump: faith, including a burning sense of certainty that by supporting him, they are instruments of God’s divine plan.
For this reason, I’ve started answering questions about Christian nationalism by saying it’s not serious, but it’s very dangerous. It’s not a serious position to argue that this diverse, secularizing country will shed liberal democracy for Catholic or Protestant religious rule. But it’s exceedingly dangerous and destabilizing when millions of citizens believe that the fate of the church is bound up in the person they believe is the once and future president of the United States.
That’s why the Trump fever won’t break. That’s why even the most biblically based arguments against Trump fall on deaf ears. That’s why the very act of Christian opposition to Trump is often seen as a grave betrayal of Christ himself. In 2024, this nation will wrestle with Christian nationalism once again, but it won’t be the nationalism of ideas. It will be a nationalism rooted more in emotion and mysticism than theology. The fever may not break until the “prophecies” change, and that is a factor that is entirely out of our control.

Quote:The Trumptards I know are a bunch of losers. Some go to Church and some don't, but they all feel a great need for a higher power, such as Trump, to intervene in their lives. The American government doesn't do that. Neither do most Churches, except for the Mormons and some Catholics. Vote for anybody, but the thing that will fix your life is you and the people you know. Certainly not God, and not the Federal government.

Democrats better fix everything they broke, because relying on "Biden isn't Trump" is a losing strategy for 2024.
