no spam please.
fireflyfans.net was registered with tucows under the normal set of rules bounding each registrant to their domain name registrar. Rules including ones where the registrant such as Haken have to provide real and true business contact info as part of the registration process. Problem is, registrars then turn around and post the contact records and make them available under whois, such as:
http://www.betterwhois.com/bwhois.cgi?domain=fireflyfans.net
Normally, this is probably okay. The problem is Haken really doesn't want every kook to know his phone number or any of his mailing addresses. So, putting not real info in the contact info lines gets him letters like these from tucows:
Hello;
This is to inform you that to date I have not seen any changes made to the
Whois.
As the agreement that you signed with us states that
"Your willful provision of inaccurate or unreliable information, your
willful failure promptly to update information "
and
"the accuracy of contact details associated with the your registration shall
constitute a material breach
of this Agreement and be a basis for cancellation of the domain name"
And that we (Tucows) as per our obligation with ICANN is left with no other
recourse than to cancel the above mentioned domain.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Paul Karkas
Compliance Officer OpenSRS
Tucows Inc.
Why stay with Tucows? they are cheap and they run a good program. Most of the other registrars either charge more or deal with things with ill manners. Tucows is also opensource and open-process. Something that we should support. Tucows make it possible for regular folks to become domain name registrars.
So, this is the part where you can help. Write to Paul in nice and professional language and ask him to get Tucows to allow registrants the option to block their contact info from the whois DB. The requirement to give Tucows real contact info wouldn't change and will continue to allow Tucows to contact the registrant/owner.
Here is something I drafted up that you can use:
..... Pauls email removed .....
Paul:
I heard that because of the contact information that the registrant for fireflyfans.net has placed in his/her contact record, you will be cancelling that domain.
As an avid fan and user of that website, I would like to let you know that the website operator needs a bit of anonymity from the world wide whois db. Having his/her public contact info available thru the whois db has previously made it possible for all sorts of oddballs to harass them.
Paul, as a user for this website, I would like to petition you to allow registrants the option to block their personal contact info from the whois DB. This will continue to allow you to have true contact info for the registrant while at the same time protect the registrant from undue harassment.
Thanks,
.....
*********** IMPORTANT UPDATE ***************
I just got the following from Paul...
Hi;
Please see - http://www.icann.org/registrars/ra-agreement-17may01.htm
3.3 Public Access to Data on Registered Names. During the Term of this Agreement:
3.3.1 At its expense, Registrar shall provide an interactive web page and a port 43 Whois service providing free public query-based access to up-to-date
(i.e., updated at least daily) data concerning all active Registered Names sponsored by Registrar for each TLD in which it is accredited. The data accessible shall consist of elements that are designated from time to time according to an ICANN adopted specification or policy. Until ICANN otherwise specifies by means of an ICANN adopted specification or policy, this data
shall consist of the following elements as contained in Registrar's database:
3.3.1.1 The name of the Registered Name;
3.3.1.2 The names of the primary nameserver and secondary nameserver(s) for the Registered Name;
3.3.1.3 The identity of Registrar (which may be provided through Registrar's website);
3.3.1.4 The original creation date of the registration;

Are you saying that who ever is running this shindig has to provide his real world information so that it may be viewed by everyone?
If that's the case, that's stupid. If that isn't what they are talking about, could you put that in Captain Dummy talk please? I'm confused, but that happens a bit too much to me lately.

That's exactly it. Tucows and pretty much all of the other domain name registrar (Tucows) require the domain name owner (Haken) to give them real contact info. And then the registrar (Tucows) post that info and make it available in whois.
So, if Haken were to change the contact records and put real contact info in there today. Everyone will be able to see it by teatime.
I can't write Cpt Dummy. So, someone else please check for understanding. This needs to be done pronto as Haken will be forced to put real info into the DB real darn soon if Tucows don't change their minds.

What kind of info is he talking about? Name, address, phone, email?
If that's the case, he can use mine. I have a po box address that doesn't look like a po box address. The PO box owner doesn't have my current living address.
My telephone never gets picked up if I don't know the phone number, and the email address I give out to everyone is the address that the spammers know. Friends and family who want to talk to me via email have a private email address.
If this would help, let me know.

Address, phone, email... yes, yes, yes, and yes. forward them to Haken. The problem is then, the ownership of the domainname will literally goes to you. So, if you and Haken and friendly like - then that's up to Haken. It might be fine as a temporary measure to hold Tucows at bay for now. But Haken should be able to own the domain name without having his info splashed all over the universe.

How do I get in touch with him? I'll try to find him, but here's my email: bigsister9874@yahoo.com
I agree, this whole having to give your information so everyone can see it whenever they want, it would make me feel so dirty!
I'm on it.

So looks like the registrar's hands are tied by ICANN to make everything available thru whois. Of course, Verisign is breaking the rules - in this case, good for their customers...
*damned if you do, and damned if you don't*
I guess there is nothing that we can do for right now... Thanks everyone who provided help and tried...
