Boris Johnson has announced that the UK will oversee a new three-week training programme for Ukrainian soldiers, as he visited Kyiv for the third time this year for talks with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
In a statement released by No 10, Johnson said: “As Ukrainian soldiers fire UK missiles in defence of your nation’s sovereignty, they do so also in defence of the very freedoms we take for granted. That is why I have offered President Zelenskiy a major new military training programme that could change the equation of this war – harnessing that most powerful of forces, the Ukrainian determination to win.”
The UK has provided £1.3bn worth of economic and military support to Ukraine, including anti-tank missiles, armoured vehicles and plastic explosives. But Ukraine’s armed forces have been pressing for training on western military kit, as well as more heavy weapons. Kyiv wants a rapid influx of expertise and equipment so it can try to start pushing Russia back before the weather turns.
The new training programme announced by Johnson will involve UK-led courses lasting three weeks, and include battle skills, basic medical training, cybersecurity and counter-explosive tactics. The courses will take place outside Ukraine, most likely in Poland.
Johnson said: “Two months on from my last visit, the Ukrainian grit, determination and resilience is stronger than ever, and I know that unbreakable resolve will long outlive the vain ambitions of President Putin.”

The European Union has “completely lost sovereignty” and is “dancing to someone else’s tunes”, Putin says. (Whose tune? Putin didn't say. Presumably the USA, but that's not what the EU says.)
He accuses the EU of “taking everything that is dictated to them and dealing harm” to its population, business and economy.
Turning to the global food crisis, Putin claims the problem “did not emerge today” and accuses Europe of “trying to blame it on someone else”.
He says:
Russia is certainly not to blame even though [western countries] are trying to pin the blame on us, on everything that’s happening in the world economy.
He accuses the US of driving up food prices by printing money and “snapping up” food on global markets.
Russia stands ready to boost its exports of grain and fertilisers, Putin says, and will send food exports to Africa and the Middle East. ("Russia stands ready" means nothing since Putin didn't say why he hasn't already sent the food. Maybe he waits for a "Feed The World" concert with Lady Gaga, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Elton John to be held before Putin acts? No such concert has been scheduled.)

Ukraine says it hit Russian navy tugboat with two Harpoon missiles
Just days after the US committed to supplying Harpoon missile launchers to Ukraine, the Ukrainian navy managed the first Harpoon missile strike of the war.
Ukraine's navy said they struck the Russian navy's Vasiliy Bekh tugboat in the Black Sea with two Harpoon missiles on Friday, the first time Ukraine has said it hit a Russian vessel with Harpoons.
The Vasiliy Bekh was allegedly transporting ammunition, weapons and personnel for the Black Sea Fleet to Snake Island. Most notably, the vessel was allegedly carrying a TOR M2KM anti-air surface-to-air missile system. It would be the 14th vessel lost by the Russian fleet since the war began.
Ukraine's Armed Forces Strategic Communications Directorate published a video purporting to show the strike from the air, but Reuters could not independently verify the footage.

The reason "why" there is a global food crisis is because of sanctions against Russia and the reason "why" Russia has not stepped in with Africa is because of sanctions against Russian banks. It's difficult for African banks to arrange non- dollar payments through non-SWIFT systems, which I what the African Union was organizing with Russia.
