Had a lousy lunch today at the senior's centre where I play mah jong. Onions inside the burger meat and over cooked french fries.
My supper is left over beef stew with some added pasta for tonight and don't know what tomorrow.
This afternoon I am having some ice cream.

Had to take a kind of emergency break from the shelf work.
I didn't realize it while sanding, but the deepest of the knotted pits in the plywood on the 2nd board I was sanding wasn't completely dry and I was messing with the integrity of the fill. I didn't figure that out until I hit the dust with a shop vac and saw some "spider-webbing" going on.
So I had to dust it off good, stop what I was doing and hit the entire bottom of that shelf with a coat of primer in an attempt to seal it in and hope that there was not enough damage to it to make it bust away.
I'll be able to prime the first shelf that I'd already fully prepared, and by that time I can move the compromised shelf from the horses and sand and prep the 3rd one. Hopefully by the time I've primed one side of that one the compromised shelf will have dried enough that I can flip it and sand the other side. Otherwise we're wasting some primer on cleanup and we're going to have to call it a day.
It is the bottom of the shelf and won't ever have any weight put on it. Hopefully when it's all dry it will be fine.

Turned out fine. 
Haven't even put paint on these yet. Just two coats of primer and the wood putty.
Nobody will even know they were made out of low-grade plywood when they're done.

Hey all!
I've been busy here, but mostly recently just running after a slew of issues that came up one after another. I was so hoping to make progress on my various projects. But ... not yet.
However, one of the things I made progress on is I've been looking at gas-powered chipper/ shredders for all the tree and bush trimming and removal I'm going to do soon. So I was looking at the heavy-duty types and O. M. G. They are EXPENSIVE. The cheapest runs about $550. And despite that I'd even consider buying one because it costs about $400 per day to rent one. But literally none of the ones I looked at had a rating higher than middling. And the faults were serious ones, like cracked body welds, bolt heads that sheared off during use, chunks of hammer-mill blades that got spat out of the machine at high speed like bullets, exhaust that ran so hot it set the wood on fire ... and so on. Really awful unsafe problems. Sigh. How hard could it be to design and build and sell something that works even averagely, without all the hazards?
So I talked it over with a family member, who said basically - the biggest volume reduction comes from doing the smaller twigs and branches that carry a lot of leaves and needles. The large branches (more than an inch or 2 in diameter) you can quickly and easily just cut up into pieces and use as firewood, or put in green waste.
So ... Forget those expensive pieces of junk! that really had me bollixed.
I'm going with electric chipper/ shredders than come in well under $200 and will do the most volume reduction.
It feels good to have come to what I think is a good decision, and out that step behind me.

Yeah. I'd never used one of those myself, but as you started telling your story and throughout I was thinking of how many paper shredders I've gone through, each time telling myself that I wasn't going to force too many pieces in at one time, only to have another one eventually smoke on me and die.
They're probably not nearly as bad as the bad reviews would have you believe, but if they're not going to do what you thought they would, no sense in buying one. Especially for the limited use you're going to get out of it.
I get your logic there though. Next time I need my drain to the sewer rodded out I'm just buying a pro machine for the job and doing it myself.

Where I'm at, they pretty much take all of that as long as you cut it down to a reasonable size. They say 4', but I've seen them take it MUCH longer than that.
One day I had pieces of two medium limbs along the side of my driveway but close to the curb. Not where I'd put them if I intended for them to be picked up. I just hadn't gotten around to cutting them up yet. When I came back one day they were just gone.
Next time I saw them come around I asked about that and he said that they can do a lot longer than 4', but they just say that to make the jobs more efficient and so that everybody isn't just putting out 12' limbs on their curbs all the time. He told me if they were having a busy day they wouldn't have picked them up, so it must have been a good day for them.

Going to paint the shelves today. I ended up using the fan last night on the primer before flipping them over and doing the other side even though they were in the living room. That worked great and didn't make it too uncomfortable. I've got plenty to do cleanup-wise in between.
Last night I also made two damp paper towels and draped them over my dollar store paint brush handle bucket thing in between the three coats I needed to do since I had to do that one-side emergency paint job because of the wood putty incident and it kept the brush and paint inside from crusting up.
Play my cards right I should be able to get both sides painted twice without having to clean the brush twice and waste paint.
These are looking so good I think I might go back to my coat closet and get rid of that veneered MDF I bought and installed in there when my bro was around almost 2 years ago. The shelf bracket that I recently installed to keep it from bowing would probably be a redundancy if I do that, but that MDF gets beat up pretty easy and is going to look out of place when I finally get the finishing touches on the kitchen and living rooms complete.
I've still got plenty of extra plywood in the garage to do that and the bottom two slide out shelves I want to make in the pantry, and I think I'll even have enough to do a shelf in the basement bedroom closet whenever I get around to working down there.

Not too terrible here, Brenda, but certainly not in the 40's. Maybe the high 20's?
At the home stretch on the shelves now. Just have to give the final coats to the tops of them. I'm waiting longer than I probably need to before I do it though because I didn't give the last coat enough time before the flip and there is some minor scuffing happening from where the shelves rested on my paint cans that are covered with paper towels for protection.
I may or may not wait another day and get the contact paper on them either tomorrow or Sunday
