Where I lived, there were all kinds of protests! Hubby had his head pounded on bc of one. My older sister's University application was firebombed, so she never got accepted there. ROTC buildings were being targeted all the time!

I will be blunt. Some Democrats are psychologically identical to Republicans, and would vote for a Trump if he was a Democrat. But not very many Democrats are like that. Not many Democrats have a weird psychology tolerating a guy who doesn't pay his taxes, cheats his business associates, cheats his wives, lies as constantly as he breaths, was a chickenhearted draft dodger, insists he won an election he lost, etc.
I know plenty of Republicans that say the bad news about Trump is fake news about Trump. Those Republicans are really saying they are crazy, crazy in the head as a flat-earther who denies Earth is spherical. They can't see it about themselves, but I already knew they were crazy from what happens in the other 95% of life unconnected to politics, so I expected their politics would also be crazy. That Republicans all over America, not just just Texas, did the craziest thing by selecting Trump in the primaries, despite his history, says everything about Republicans.

Back to the Putin Disaster.
Putin is trying to arm Russia as if it still is a superpower without having the resources to pay for it. Economy is totally dependent on fossil fuels and demand for natural gas/crude oil will go down. As demand goes, so goes Russia.
Setting a crisis is the common way for dictators in trouble to unite the population and that’s what Putin is trying to do. He is inventing enemies all over, foreign agents trying to infiltrate Russia and he is trying to invoke nationalistic ideas, Russia being an exceptional nation with a mission to dominate Europe.
Most Russians, even the ones who don’t support Putin, are still convinced that Russia is a superpower with the right to bully its neighbors
American politicians have historically deflected attention from their own failures by blaming immigrants or minorities (see Lyndon Johnson's famous "give a [white] man someone to look down on" remark); Putin uses Europe and the West in a similar way. Of course it's not that Russians aren't aware he's a completely corrupt autocrat with dreams of becoming another Stalin -- it's that they feel he's the only one who will "stand up" for them. Exactly what a lot of Republican voters saw in Trump. No wonder they were two peas in a pod.
