The American Survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
More than 75 years after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945, roughly 136,000 people are living with the memories—and effects—of the disasters. In the U.S., specifically, there are believed to be just under 1,000 survivors. Many of these men and women ended up in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as children or young adults on those fateful days because they were visiting extended family, or had been sent to study in the country during a time of rising anti-Asian sentiments in the U.S. (It was not uncommon for families of Japanese descent in America to send their children to Japanese schools for a few years so that they would have the option to work in the country as adults.)
American survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki gather for biannual medical checkups. The medical check-ups are done by Hiroshima physicians, and the funding source is the Japanese government. [Since 1977], the Japanese government has sent a team of medical doctors specializing in the treatment of radiation illnesses to do checkups on survivors in the U.S. Many American survivors think of the checkups as an opportunity to see each other and say hi to each other.
This is a strange legacy of the bomb: there are American survivors, and yet their medical checkups are conducted by Japanese physicians. One element of the history is the lack of recognition of these American survivors by the U.S. government—they are not recognized in the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act that passed in the 1990s to benefit people affected by radiation, such as Nevada nuclear test fallout victims, downwinders and so forth. Because of that lack of recognition, the Japanese government was the entity that American survivors went to demand assistance from.
Why was America’s response so different from Japan’s?
On the American side, I think it just brings up many unwanted questions. World War II is still considered to be a “good war,” and many people do not want to raise any ethical or legal questions about that narrative. In the decades before the 2010 passage of the Affordable Care Act, about 15 percent of Americans were uninsured for the costs of health care. Texas stood out, ranking an abysmal 48th in the nation. About 25 percent of Texans — or 6.4 million of our neighbors — were uninsured in 2011, according to Southern Methodist University professor Cal Jillson, who writes about this in his statistically rich “Lone Star Tarnished: A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy.”
Following passage of the ACA, the national rate of uninsured people plunged to the current 10.8 percent. The uninsured rate has split dramatically, however, between states that expanded Medicaid through federal-state partnerships and states that did not expand Medicaid.
Texas has the most uninsured people of any state by a huge margin — currently 5.4 million. The average household income limit for a family of three in 2020 was $8,905; above that, they wouldn’t qualify for Medicaid in Texas. The deal for states to expand Medicaid eligibility is so obviously financially favorable that it is shocking that Texas has not done it yet.
Uninsured people don’t fail to access the health care system when they get sick. They show up at the emergency room, which is the absolutely the most expensive way to obtain health care.
Emergency rooms have to treat people who show up without insurance. Local, county and nonprofit hospitals typically then pick up the tab for these patients. We’re not saving that money as taxpayers. It’s a fiscally irresponsible way to treat people. It’s an absurd dereliction of financial duty by Texas State government.
Not taking a 90 percent federal reimbursement? That’s not being smart with money. That’s being something else.

No matter how they do it, the Healthcare System is designed from the ground up to eventually make paupers of everyone.

How did Jefferson profit from The System? In 1860, four million slaves were worth more than every bank, factory, and railroad combined. The slaves were worth more than all the manufacturing in this country before the Civil War began.
We see this creation of wealth most famously through Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson and other slave masters would rape the enslaved women on their plantations, and then when those women had children, they would sell them. They were, in effect, selling their own children into slavery and receiving great riches in return for making paupers.
People had ways of justifying it to themselves. People find ways of doing evil things and convincing themselves that they aren't evil and aren't as bad as other people. It becomes this exercise in moral relativity where Jefferson can write in one document that all men are created equal and write in another that Black people are likely inferior to Whites in both body and mind -- where he can write one of the most important documents in the history of the Western world and also enslave over 600 people, his own children.
And that he can carry on a relationship, to the extent it can be called a relationship, with Sally Hemings for over 40 years and believe it to be consensual when it is impossible for there to be any semblance of consent when she is his human property. He owns her and he owns her children and yet is somebody who tries to convince himself that what he's doing is not as bad as what other people are doing, that he is a benevolent slaver, even though he knows what he is doing is wrong.

Yes, Al Gore won Florida. There are a surprising number of people who still don't know that a proper check of the 2000 presidential vote in Florida was conducted and concluded that Al Gore won.

I'll take the money, but I not voting for the candidates preferred by mentally ill white trash voters.
