Why two? Why does it mean what you say if going forward we find the need to go after terrorists in Afghanistan? Why do some see things in such a black and white fashion? I feel getting out was right. 20 years, a trillion dollars spent and standing up an army of 300,000 should have been enough. We gave them more than a fighting chance. In the end they failed to stand up when it counted according to our way of interpreting events. How is that our fault?
There is no way to end an ongoing conflict with everyone being in agreement. Trump made a deal with the Taliban to be out end of May. Biden pushed it back to the end of August and got it done. In a very short time we airlifted over a 120,000 Afghans who allied with us. Worked directly with us. Do I wish he’d done things a little differently; yup? Do I know best? How arrogant would that make me if I think that?
There are a few thousand more Afghans who worked with us that I hope we can help. However many who want out were those who were against the Taliban more as Afghans, and less so as allies. I hope we can help them as well but in the end, Afghanistan is for the Afghans. Some fight on while others capitulate.
I hope for the best but our attention needs to be elsewhere. Afghanistan is little more than a blip, a gnat on the scale of things compared to China. Biden knows this and is moving accordingly and he has a very well trained army to do so.

Wow you’ve twisted yourself into a knot. Terrorism has never won anything throughout history; simple. And being so self-righteous leaves you out of any serious discussion as to how to navigate the world’s quandaries. You always pick the low hanging fruit to post about. War bad, military contractors got rich type bullshit.
Of course war is bad. Tell that to those who would create the circumstances that induce it and stop condemning those stuck fighting it. And we'd all be speaking Russian and learning Chinese right now without those military contractors. They are needed even if they are a self-serving entity.
With the first gunshot comes mistakes. It’s impossible to believe we’ll get it perfect. It’s also revealing that you always take the position of being criticizer and chief; never offering a path forward.

The US gaining its independence wasn't far removed from terrorism. What the North did to the South was the same. But the history books are written by the winners and nobody who wins calls themselves terrorists. Had the South won the Civil War in our timeline, the entire perspective of the past would be wholly different than it is today.

On the morning of July 12th 2007, two Apache helicopters using 30mm cannon fire killed about a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad.
Two children were also wounded.
Although some of the men appear to have been armed, the behavior of nearly everyone was relaxed.
The U.S. military initially claimed that all the dead were "anti-lraqi forces" or "insurgents".
Somebody went to jail over what happened in this video . . . the person who publicly leaked it, not the people who did the killings.

There are many reasons. One is that the Trump administration intentionally broke the SIV processing system in 2017 creating a huge backlog of Afghan partners who could have been evacuated earlier.
The system was so gummed up that, by early 2021, the average wait time for an SIV had soared to well over two years.
I managed SIV operations in Iraq and served as a senior official in the State Department refugee bureau during the Trump administration. I witnessed first-hand how this process could be fixed and how the Trump administration sabotaged it.
