Oh, I'm talking about back in the day - hundreds of years ago - before birth control and medical abortions and Hitler. Back to the 1400s to 1800s. Looking at the vast numbers of abandoned babies (many tens of thousands a year in France), the routine farming-out of even nursing-infant-care by women of means, family sizes of poor v rich ... it's pretty clear that one way or another, many women opted out of motherhood. For poor women, often it wasn't a choice, they just didn't have the means to feed another mouth without causing their other children to starve. But for women of means, the record is clear that they had far fewer children, and they farmed-out their care from birth (wet-nurses) on (children lived with live-in nannies often elsewhere, or were sent to boarding schools).
Obviously it's a matter of numbers. Not everyone did one or the other. But there was a significant record that women with a choice chose other, more interesting things than motherhood and its non-stop efforts and tedium.
