Reviewer "Fireflyin'" writes: The Boom! Studios comics: I finally got around to talking about the Firefly comics from Boom. Although 'moaning' might be a more apt description.

Chris Sullivan's question: I’m curious how the boom comics get the characters voices wrong.

Fireflyin' answer: Personally I imagine that it's a combination of two things. 1. Joss Whedon's characters in general tend to have very distinctive ways of talking. This makes it very apparent when characters say something in a way that doesn't sound like the way they should say it. 2. Greg Pak doesn't have sufficient familiarity with the characters. In the first issue, at the back of the comic in the interview section he says how he was initially unsure about taking the job because he'd never seen Firefly before...

If you're asking for clarification of what I mean by the character voices sounding wrong, the best you can do is just read the comics and decide yourself if you can hear the characters saying these lines. Whenever I've read Pak's dialogue, in almost every instance I've had to make a concerted effort to try and hear the characters saying these lines. This was just not an issue in the Dark Horse Comics or in James Lovegrove's Novels (there are a few niggles here and there but for the most part Lovegrove captures the voices very well).

I'd offer a simple example; in almost every instance, Jayne refers to Shepherd Book as 'Book'. Not 'Shepherd' or 'Shepherd Book', just 'Book'. In the show, Jayne I don't think ever refers to him that way. In fact all the characters nearly exclusively refer to him as 'Shepherd' or 'Shepherd Book'. I'm offering this as just an example. This is a very basic idiosyncrasy of these characters and Pak can't even get that right. It's repeated in other situations. Kaylee seems to call 'Mal' by his first name a lot when she almost always refers to him as 'Cap' or 'Captain' in the show. Mal seems to call Simon by his first name too much when in the show he usually calls him 'Doc'. Basic things that this guy is getting wrong because he just doesn't seem to be familiar enough with these characters. The way that characters talk to and about each other is such an entry-level thing, if he can't get this right, what hope has he of mastering the more complicated situations that the characters find themselves in?

Reading his dialogue, it makes the crew of Serenity feel like strangers and that's not why anyone is picking up these comics.

I finally finished the six issue arc set twenty or so years after Emma’s birth. The covers are pretty great. My non-spoiler review is below. Interested in your take as Boom Studios have not been stellar in keeping Firefly characters and canon consistent.

So, this story has potential, as it is really, in my mind is the best way to continue the Firefly franchise on the small or big screen. The actors have aged, or are too busy, so there has to be a whole new cast- but not a reboot of the olds crew.

Instead, the focus of a new show should be beyond the old cast. The perfect person to lead that revival is Emma, the daughter of Zoe and Wash, with a new crew (in this story that's Lu and Salo).

In "Brand New 'Verse," we're 2,924 days/8 years (mentioned by River in issue #6) after Simon and Kaylee moved in together to be parents on Bryson's Rock (a moon of Greenleaf) and twenty years after Emma was born, making it around 2539. Emma and Zoe are still flying Serenity, trying to get by, with a crew of Lu and Salo. Lu is a mechanic, while Salo is the level-headed muscle. Lu and Salo seem to be taking the place of Kaylee and a hybrid Jayne + Book character respectively.

Emma and Zoe are a good pair. They squabble like a mother and daughter sometimes do, but they also see eye-to-eye on what needs to be done in honor of Wash and based on their admiration for Mal. Wash only appears in this story in flashbacks, while Mal is mentioned (and only seen once in a flashback drunk at a bar), but it is never completely explained what happened to him. Just that he's not on Serenity.

In their travels, they discover a woman that survived cryosleep in the old ark ships from Earth-that-Was. She only remembers that she was from a place called San Francisco, so she goes by Cisco. The crew learns that the Alliance is after intelligence about the ark ship, Cisco, and her knowledge of a brand new 'verse beyond theirs. This of course leads to a chase, which leads Emma and the crew to Kaylee and Simon on Bryson's Rock (to hide), and later to find River, Inara, and a kid with powers greater than Rivers’.

I won't give the rest away, but I stand by the statement that this story has the potential to be the path forward to see Firefly on TV again. The comics aren't great as there is very little character development on Salo and Lu, and Emma is only really given a few plot points to understand how the past shaped her. She starts off a bit bratty but comes into her own as a leader when faced with danger and survival. She's a hybrid Zoe, Mal, and Wash.

The story arc is also only a disappointing six comics, leaving so many unanswered questions about the plot, forcing a fairly complicated storyline to wrap up hurriedly without much of a climax. The basic structure of this series, however, could and should be expanded to a longer series of stories - hopefully on television. Here's hoping to keep flying'.
