Hey heres another for the con, I've read this board a few times and have been instrumental for getting at least 10 others to buy firefly...is a regular hype machine...

Anyways my friend Rijn and I will be attending, sadly though I doubt we will be in coustume for any of the fancy dress parties just cuz well...spending all that money on hotel, travel and con kinda gets us out.... ooooh... I know... I can be a be a verse actor in "the earth that was" period costume.....

yeah...thats me sorted-w-

So anyway be on the lookout for a 5'7 guy with a brown mop top and an orangutang with a ginger beard... the monkey is called Rijn.. and well actually he's not a monkey

You're not really bringing an ape? Aw, that's disappointing. Imagine he'd probably be a blast at parties. Speaking of blasts: I was originally against the Jedi-themed party night and wasn't going to dress for it, but then I talked to my daughter and realized: Hey, everyone always tells Sami that she's a ringer for Natalie Portman! Which is Queen Amidala/Padme, right? Forgot about it (I'm more of a classic Star Wars fan). Anyway, so now we're all crazy for making a Padme costume, so I guess one or both of us will do the fancy dress on all three nights. Gosh, does anybody want to volunteer to help us with our luggage? What about that orangutan: Does he have any portering skills? LOL. We're going to have some fun getting around on the public transport, lugging three cases of clothes/costumes

We must be mad to attempt this trip. Oh, well. We're geeky Yanks. Madness is part of our charm ;) Gosh, I can't WAIT for April!

If you are flying into Heathrow, I`m pretty certain that one of the free orbital bus routes would take you from the heathrow airport bus station to very close to the hotel or alternatively theres a hoppabus - see http://www.londontoolkit.com/lhr/thistle_lhr.htm for more details (useful page!)

We will need them.

It looks like we fly into Heathrow about four days early, do some touring, and evntually come 'round the long way from...Edinburgh, of all places. We have friends up there and plan to stay on their sofa for a night before heading south again. I guess we'll be taking the train down again from Edinburgh to Heathrow Airport and then grab some sort of bus over to the Thistle (using your links to research, no doubt. I suspect that we won't be the first people there on Friday, because we will be on the last leg of a whirlwind tour, my friends ;-)

At least you'll have no trouble spotting us: We should be a bit travel-worn by the time the convention begins. Also, since we're a mother/teenager team, traveling together, there could be visible bruises on our faces and a homicidal gleam in our dark-circled eyes by April 29th. It's also possible at least one of us shall be terribly hungover, if the college kids in Edinburgh manage to lead us astray.

But no worries: We shall perk right up again in the presence of Browncoats. Never fear!

You're taking a train from Edinburgh to Heathrow???

Firstly, it's about 8 or more hours to get a train from Edinburgh to London. Secondly, the train doesn't take you to Heathrow. It takes you to either Euston or Kings Cross railway stations (someone else can tell me which one is correct - I know Glasgow goes in to Euston, not sure about Edinburgh).

If it's Kings Cross, you have to then take the London Underground to Heathrow, which is about one and a half hours. If it's Euston, you have to change trains - not a good idea with all that luggage.

May I suggest you try and fly from Edinburgh to Heathrow? A lot quicker!

I'd second that about flying - it's a *very* long way into London and the train will probably be crowded. Crossing London is not fun at the best of times, there are so many people there! Also flying to Heathrow gets you not so far from the Thistle. Flying may also be cheaper, not sure but the train will be very expensive.

Well, we're taking the train from Kings Cross to Scotland on Wednesday, so I figured we'd take the train back to Kings Cross, and then either take the Underground or another train to get to Heathrow.

I thought the express train to Edinburgh was four or five hours; that's what it said on the tour schedule. When does it take EIGHT?

Better check into it, huh?

(Never even considered flying, because our pals in Edinburgh seem to assume that train travel is the usual way to go).

As a Yank living in the UK I would take any brit rail time table with enough salt to poison me, especially on a route that goes the length of the country.

You do see more of the countryside by train but I wouldn't be suprised if you end up seeing it a LOT more than you expected. Your tour schedule doesn't take into account any rail work in progress, leaves on the line or the wrong kind of snow. For explanations of those last two, ask your Scottish friends.

Definitely check out the airlines!

Ah, suddenly a flash of memory: The last time we were *supposed* to go to Edinburgh (Spring 2002), the rail WAS shutdown for some reason and the tour operator had to offer a substitute tour to Paris instead. I'd forgotten.

You're telling us this happens ALL the time??

Wow.
We took the trains everywhere in 2002 and never had the least delay or difficulty (well, except for the time my then-14-year-old daughter left her purse on the train and we ended up taking an unscheduled trip from Bath to Bristol just to fetch it, but that's hardly the British rail system's fault, now is it?)

Sigh. A lot of my planning has revolved around getting our money's worth out of a 4-Day Rail Pass. I guess we could do train one way and flight the other. Sure would save time! Thanx, I'll do some investigating :-)

EDIT to add: There'd better not be SNOW at the end of April! If I wanted THAT sort of spring vacation, I'd go visit Mommy in Minneapolis. Hey, I need room in the luggage for costumes; winter gear NOT going to fit
