If Donald Trump runs for president again in 2024, the United States could find itself in a politically perilous situation by mid-November that year.
If Joe Biden (or, in the event that he doesn't run, Kamala Harris or another Democrat) wins decisively, by wide margins in multiple states, we will probably be fine. Meanwhile, if Trump prevails comfortably, American democracy will go on well enough, despite the turbulence of a second Trump administration.
But if the outcome of the vote in November 2024 is close enough that Trump can launch another "stop the steal" operation in numerous swing states, things are going to get ugly fast. In that case, American democracy itself could be facing its zero hour.
Let's begin at the beginning: Is Trump going to run again? No one can know for sure, but it's looking likely. For one thing, because he's nursing grudges and he wants revenge. For another, because he's under legal threat from various investigations, and if he were to win, he would likely be immunized from punishment until he left office.

Vice Presidents are usually weaklings that have only one vote getting characteristic when the Presidential candidate picks his own V.P. I think a President's ego strongly tends to make him pick a weakling who won't outshine the President, so complaining that V.P. Harris is weak ignores American history.
America is a long-long way from the original Constitutional design where strong individuals run for President and the two strongest could end up being President and Vice-President, rather than the present system which almost always picks a weakling for one of those positions. That would explain why Lincoln was followed by the worst President in history -- Andrew Johnson -- whose only qualification for the job of V.P. was that he owned slaves in Tennessee and Lincoln needed votes from Tennessee because it didn't join the Confederacy.
Lincoln really didn't think ahead about what political catastrophe would happen if he died and a guy became President who would pardon every slave-owner, instead of executing the worst traitors who would soon reanimate slavery, but in a more efficient form that is still in use today, with a minimum wage seldom being raised and never enough for a middle class life. Also the reason why privately employed workers have zero paid vacation by Federal law and zero job security and zero paid sick time by law and zero, well, you get the idea that there still is a slave class which holds about 40% of all workers. With Capitalism, the employer doesn't need worry about what happens to his slaves when he doesn't need them. In old fashion slavery, which was less profitable, the employer was required to keep feeding his slaves, even if they were too old or sick to work. With modern Capitalism, it is perfectly okay for employers to let their old slaves starve to death.

Durst's lawyers have been protecting him from conviction for multiple-murders for multiple-years. Since that's the way the system works, it is a sure thing that Trump's lawyers will be able to protect Trump for many years to come. That assumes Trump doesn't try to cheat his lawyers out of their pay. In that case, Trump will be convicted faster than a black teenager who robs a convenience store.
