I know that some nations routinely hold joint military exercises, like Russia and China, and I used to wonder about their utility, until I thought about the difficulty of meshing different armedforced together into an effective fighting unit.
Is there ONE Commander, with everyone taking orders from him/her? Is there a joint command structure, with a kind of "division of labor", where roles are assigned? (I can't imagine that being very effective, bc if the situation changes and roles need to be modified, the negotiations would change under battlefield conditions. But for, yanno, political reasons I also can't imagine some nations taking a subordinate role, so...)
Also the logistics. Supply lines and supplies specifically. Some supplies, like diesel,are generically useful, but most nations have different armaments, or different generations, that require different munitions. So every participant has to bring their own supplies.
And then there's the commutation problem everyone has to be on the same frequency. Think that isn't a problem? Our firefighters and police were on different frequencies for 911, and it bollixed response.
Plus, everyone needs to speak the same language.
I looked at the list of nations in that Black Sea exercise, and I see that MANY of them have no strategic, geopolitical, economic, alliance, or military reason to be there.
Brazil?? Morocco?? Japan?? S Korea?? Pakistan??

Hey Polish Russian Collaborator Signym. Look at a map of the world in the 50's. Now look at a current one. My word, what has happened to Russia's influences around the globe? Where did all its satellite countries go? NATO has Russia surrounded.
What happened in Georgia and Crimea was not a display of power. It was about Putin and Russia panicking.

ABOARD USS ROSS (AP) — Ukraine and NATO have conducted Black Sea drills involving dozens of warships in a two-week show of their strong defense ties and capability following a confrontation between Russia’s military forces and a British destroyer off Crimea last month.
The Sea Breeze 2021 maneuvers that ended Saturday involved about 30 warships and 40 aircraft from NATO members and Ukraine. The captain of the USS Ross, a U.S. Navy destroyer that took part in the drills, said the exercise was designed to improve how the equipment and personnel of the participating nations operate together.
“We’d like to demonstrate to everybody, the international community, that no one nation can claim the Black Sea or any international body of water,” Cmdr. John D. John said aboard the guided missile destroyer previously deployed to the area for drills. “Those bodies of water belong to the international community, and we’re committed to ensure that all nations have access to international waterways.”
The Russian Defense Ministry said it was closely monitoring Sea Breeze. The Russian military also conducted a series of parallel drills in the Black Sea and southwestern Russia, with warplanes practicing bombing runs and long-range air defense missiles’ deploying to protect the coast.
Last month, Russia said one of its warships in the Black Sea fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of the HMS Defender, a British Royal Navy destroyer, to chase it away from an area near Crimea that Moscow claims as its territorial waters.
Russia denounced the Defender’s maneuver as a provocation and warned that next time it might fire to hit intruding warships.
Britain, which like most other nations didn’t recognize Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, insisted the Defender wasn’t fired upon on June 23 and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters when Russia sent its planes into the air and shots were heard during the showdown.
The incident added to the tensions between Russia and the NATO allies. Relations between Russia and the West have sunk to post-Cold War lows over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, its support for a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine, accusations of Russian hacking attacks, election interference and other irritants.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that the incident with the Defender wouldn’t have triggered a global conflict even if Russia had sunk the British vessel because the West knows it can’t win such a war. The statement appeared to indicate Putin’s resolve to raise the stakes should a similar incident happen again.
Aboard the Ross, John said the Sea Breeze participants were exercising their right to operate in international waters. He described the drills as “a tangible demonstration of our commitment to each other for a safe and stable Black Sea region.”

Well, I doubt anything THAT drastic happened, but the coordination nightmare between so many different languages and systems must have been something. I'll think if they managed to make it from one side of the Black Sea to the other without running into each other would have been considered a success.
I have to wonder why the USA called/twisted arms of so many irrelevant nations into the exercise. It's not like Morocco or Brazil or S Korea or Japan are ACTUALLY going to be fighting Russia in the Black Sea. All I can figure is that this was a Big Political Statement to China (not Russia) indicating who would be fighting in the Taiwan Straits (Japan, S Korea) if push came to shove. No idea what some of those ancillary ships are, unless they are also statements about the Suez Canal (Egypt) and maybe the Straits of Gibralter (Morocco).
AFA that incursion by the British and Dutch ships, I think it was to monitor Russian reaction, suss out their radar stations, defense emplacements, and communications. But since Russia didn't really bring out its big guns (or in this case, missiles) I doubt that NATO military got much to look at.
It was, as the article calls it, a "two week show". Also:

Russia never claimed the Black Sea as "sovereign property", just certain coastal areas around their installations. Britain and the Nederlands violated those restrictions, the Brtish shp was scared away and the Dutch shipped got its (electronic) nose clipped.
