Consider, again, what we are talking about: The top aide to the President of the United States tried to get the head of the Department of Justice to launch investigations into appallingly ridiculous election fraud claims solely because the aforementioned President couldn’t (and can’t) accept that he lost the 2020 election.
That these efforts came in the run-up to the violent insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, which left more than 100 police officers injured and five people dead, make them all the more appalling. As Trump was publicly fomenting doubt in the election results – via a series of failed lawsuits and debunked conspiracy theories – his chief of staff was working privately to cajole the nation’s chief law enforcement official to resuscitate these fallacies in order to please Trump.
Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, got it right when he said Meadows’ pressure campaign “underscores the depths of the White House’s efforts to co-opt the department and influence the electoral vote certification. This is a five alarm fire for our democracy.”

Pennsylvania Republicans Introduce Sweeping Election Reform Bill

Pennsylvania Republicans proposed an overhaul of the state’s election system on Thursday with stricter voter identification requirements and mail ballot signature verification.
State Rep. Seth Grove—the chair of the House State Government Committee who acts as House Republicans’ point person for election legislation—introduced the Voting Rights Protection Act, House Bill 1300, after months of hearings by the House State Government Committee.
The legislation aims at transforming and improving Pennsylvania’s election process to restore the integrity of and trust in elections, according to a statement from Grove’s office.
The bill seems to embrace ideas from both the Republican and Democrat side and proposes comprehensive measures to change the rules for election including:
Allowing early in-person voting beginning in 2025.
Allowing unsigned or undated ballots to be corrected before 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Giving counties the option to use secure mail-in ballot drop boxes during specific times at secure locations.
Allowing mail-in ballots to be counted five days before an election. Current law allows the count to begin no earlier than 7:00 a.m. on Election Day.
Requiring every voter to present a photo ID at the polls.
Requiring signature verification for mail ballots.
Eliminating the permanent mail-in voting list.
Establishing a Bureau of Election Audits under the state Auditor General’s office. The newly-established bureau will have subpoena power and will regularly conduct election audits.
Most of the proposed rules in House Bill 1300 are based on a report published by the State House Government Committee back on May 10.
The report (pdf)—titled “A Comprehensive Review of Pennsylvania’s Election Laws: How Pennsylvania Can Guarantee Rights and Integrity in Our Election System”—identifies 25 aspects of the election process that needs improvements.
The bill is intended to fix the issues listed in the report. “This responsible bill includes all aspects of issues brought before the committee and will propel Pennsylvania’s election into the 21st century, all while fixing fatal flaws and election security issues,” Grove said.
Pennsylvania House Speaker Bryan Cutler, a Republican, is supportive of the bill.
“House Republicans have consistently paved the way to more accessible, secure[,] and accurate elections,” he said. “Our caucus ensured the state tracked the impacts of our evolving election law in 2019 and 2020, and today we see those efforts brought to fruition in this important and thorough legislation by Chairman Grove. Pennsylvanians must have faith in their elections and this bill is another piece of restoring the public’s trust.”
The proposed bill will likely be blocked by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, though Republicans control both the House and Senate in the state legislature.
Wolf suggested earlier the week that he will veto any election bill from the Republican side.
“I will stand up for our freedom to vote. I will not allow bad actors to put up barriers to voting in Pennsylvania,” he said. “Not only will I veto any legislative efforts to roll back the freedoms Pennsylvanians right now have, I will continue to push for changes that expand our access to the polls.”
The Republicans may not have enough votes to override Wolf’s likely veto.
House Minority Leader Rep. Joanna E. McClinton told KDKA-TV that some parts of the bill may get bipartisan support but she denounced the idea of Bureau of Election Audits.
“We do not need a Bureau of Election Audits. One of the things I’m waiting for my colleagues across the aisle to do is end the big lie, which reeked so much terror and havoc and a deadly attack on our United States Capitol,” she said.
She also criticized that the Republicans cut off Democrats during the legislative process, saying the bill will reach an impasse at the executive

Mitch McConnell Lays Down Radical Marker on Voting Rights: “This Is Not a Federal Issue”
“It oughta be left to the states,” McConnell said of voting rights protection. “There’s no point in having … a debate in the U.S. Senate about something we ought not to do.”
In 1890, responding to a wave of violent suppression of Black voters in the South, Rep. Henry Cabot Lodge, a Northeastern Republican, pushed through a bill to ban poll taxes and give the federal government the power to enforce the 15th Amendment, which allowed all men regardless of race the right to vote. That amendment had been run through Congress on a party-line vote.
The Lodge bill passed the House by six votes, again along party lines, and it headed to the Senate, where it was filibustered for months by Democrats. Despite having majority backing, supporters couldn’t bring it to a final vote, and it was finally taken off the floor in January 1891. With the threat of federal intervention removed, the terror campaign of lynchings and mob violence accelerated. The multiracial populist movement collapsed, as white populists turned on their erstwhile Black populist allies. Deprived of political power and beset on all sides by violence, as many as 6 million Black residents of the South eventually decamped for the North.
There would be no further federal intervention in voting rights for 67 years, until passage of the 1957 Civil Rights Act, culminating in the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Since 1965, the idea that the federal government has a role to play in protecting the right to vote has been a universally held opinion among elected officials. In 2006, the Voting Rights Act was reauthorized by Congress and passed the Senate by a vote of 98-0. It included a provision that required states with a history of discrimination in voting laws to preclear any new election laws with the Justice Department. In 2013, in a 5-4 Supreme Court decision, Chief Justice John Roberts struck the preclearance provision down, arguing that the South had changed and that it was no longer necessary.
Southern states began immediately to amend their voting laws, with court documents showing the explicit purpose being to minimize the power of the Black vote in an effort to boost Republican candidates.
On Tuesday, the Senate moved to take up debate on S. 1, the “For the People Act.” The parties having switched sides on the question of voting rights, S. 1 represents the Democratic response to recent voter suppression laws.
This time, 130 years after the Lodge bill, it would be Republicans who filibustered. In explaining the party’s position, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act as recently as 2006, declared that the federal government ought to have no role in elections, a view that would have been at home between 1890 and 1965, but is strikingly radical in a post-civil rights era.
“This is not a federal issue. It oughta be left to the states. There’s nothing broken around the country,” McConnell said at his weekly press conference when asked why Republicans were blocking a voting rights bill from being debated on the Senate floor. “The system upheld very well during intense stress in the latter part of the previous Congress. There’s no rational basis for federalizing this election. Therefore, there’s no point in having an election — a debate in the U.S. Senate about something we ought not to do.”
McConnell was asked what he made of states such as Arizona, which is engaged in a lengthy “audit” of the presidential vote, with state Republicans hoping to overturn the results.
“I’m OK with the states sorting this sort of stuff out,” McConnell said. “The most important election in the country is the presidential election. It’s not decided in Congress, it’s decided in the Electoral College; those are state-by-state decisions, and so regardless of what may be happening in some state, there’s no rationale for federal intervention. They’ll figure it all out, they’ll go to court, they’ll determine whether or not there’s any r

Do we need voter ID? I think we do - along with intensive outreach and help to make sure every eligible citizen can easily get one, for free, without a multitude of physical and bureaucratic barriers. And I think that voter ID needs to be able to be quickly and easily voided and replaced when people permanently move to a new location. I also believe it needs national federal standards for who is allowed to vote in federal elections instead of the hodgepodge of exceptions and limitations across the country. If being allowed to vote in federal elections is a national Constitutional right, then it needs to be administered nationally, according to the Constitution as it currently stands.
But it needs so much more!

First of all, I'm aghast that they DIDN'T require signature verification with mail-in ballots! I mean ... WTF???
And establishing a "permanent" mail-in voting list??? What about when people move? Or die?
And not having the mechanism and authority to audit elections, and therefore allowing elections to be un-auditable??? What the hell were they thinking?
NO WONDER the PA vote was such a clusterfuck!
But aside from that. my impression of their "reforms" is that the security and identification requirements around in-person voting are .STILL. stricter than around mail-in voting. If you're going to do mail-in voting, it should be just as secure and tight as in-person voting. Since in-person voting will reqire a picture ID (which is more certain than signature verification) and will have locked ballot boxes and therefore better Chain of Custody (as opposed to mailboxes and all of the handling that mail requires) mail-in vote security should be upgraded to be equivalent to in-person voting.
Anyway, the reforms all seem to be heading in the direction of more/better voter ID.

When I get my news, I get it from independent content creators.
I also check RealClearPolitics daily, and then I do my own research on things that interest me.
I'm the only one here that ever does any deep dives into polling methodology and SEC records. I'm sure as fuck the only one here that would have ever been able to find the exact court date and time for the recent court case against the governor of Indiana.

First of all, I'm aghast that they DIDN'T require signature verification with mail-in ballots! I mean ... WTF???
And establishing a "permanent" mail-in voting list??? What about when people move? Or die?
And not having the mechanism and authority to audit elections, and therefore allowing elections to be un-auditable??? What the hell were they thinking?
NO WONDER the PA vote was such a clusterfuck!
But aside from that. my impression of their "reforms" is that the security and identification requirements around in-person voting are .STILL. stricter than around mail-in voting. If you're going to do mail-in voting, it should be just as secure and tight as in-person voting. Since in-person voting will reqire a picture ID (which is more certain than signature verification) and will have locked ballot boxes and therefore better Chain of Custody (as opposed to mailboxes and all of the handling that mail requires) mail-in vote security should be upgraded to be equivalent to in-person voting.
Anyway, the reforms all seem to be heading in the direction of more/better voter ID.

Not bafflement, JSF, shock.
The reason for these reforms is that PA just completed an audit of their voting system, and according to the audit the vote was all according to established procedure.
The audit DID mention several areas of concern, and lack of signature verification was one of them. That means that NOT CHECKING SIGNATURES IS ESTABLISHED PROCEDURE.
Well, first of all, I'm not exactly impressed with signature verification. BANKS are c supposed to do it with checks bc, hey, there's money involved. But we had THREE altered checks (stolen from the Post Office) go thru the bank. Nobody noticed the non- matching signatures!
But as loosey-goosey as signature verification is, they didn't even do that!
And how are they supposed to implement that, anyway? How's many ppl would it take to give EACH signed ballot a good going-over? After the first hour, the temptation would be to let EVERYTHING go thru bc to hold something back would just mean more work.
I sure hope there's software that can do this.

I have zero memory of anybody ever once matching my signature when I've used my credit card. My signature these days has degraded to the point that I might as well just sign my name with an X, and I've never had a problem cashing a check.
Over the last few years, nobody even asks me to sign anything when I use a credit card anymore. They don't even pay people to do it now.

“Even just gravel, we’d be very grateful,” said Tovina Yazzie, manager of the Sweetwater Chapter on the Navajo Nation.
Yazzie tries to impress upon tribal members that voting could result in more funding to the small community near the Arizona-Utah border. She also recognizes the obstacles.

Against a backdrop of confusion and suspicion and frightening civic friction—with Trump claiming he’d been cheated out of victory, and anecdotes about fraud coursing through every corner of the state—McBroom had led an exhaustive probe of Michigan’s electoral integrity. His committee interviewed scores of witnesses, subpoenaed and reviewed thousands of pages of documents, dissected the procedural mechanics of Michigan’s highly decentralized elections system, and scrutinized the most trafficked claims about corruption at the state’s ballot box in November. McBroom’s conclusion hit Lansing like a meteor: It was all a bunch of nonsense.
“Our clear finding is that citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of Michigan,” McBroom wrote in the report. “There is no evidence presented at this time to prove either significant acts of fraud or that an organized, wide-scale effort to commit fraudulent activity was perpetrated in order to subvert the will of Michigan voters.”
For good measure, McBroom added: “The Committee strongly recommends citizens use a critical eye and ear toward those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain.”
This reflected a pattern throughout the report—a clear and clinical statement of facts, accompanied by more animated language that expressed disgust with the grifters selling deception to the masses and disappointment with the voters who were buying it. Sitting at his dinner table, I told the senator that his writing occasionally took a tone of anger. He smirked. “I don’t know that I ever wrote angry,” McBroom replied. “But I tried to leave no room for doubt.”
So much for that. Soon after the report was released, Trump issued a thundering statement calling McBroom’s investigation “a cover up, and a method of getting out of a Forensic Audit for the examination of the Presidential contest.” The former president then published the office phone numbers for McBroom and Michigan’s GOP Senate majority leader, Mike Shirkey, urging his followers to “call those two Senators now and get them to do the right thing, or vote them the hell out of office!”
McBroom had grown up a “history nerd.” He idolized the revolutionary Founders. He inhaled biographies of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt. He revered the institution of the American presidency. And here was the 45th president, calling him out by name, accusing him of unthinkable treachery.
“Surreal,” McBroom said quietly. He leaned back, running his hands through a mess of sweaty blond hair. Then he folded his thick arms, which bulged from a red cutoff button-up shirt, staring heavenward in search of the words. Some 30 seconds went by. “Just … surreal.”
Perhaps trying to cheer himself, McBroom told me he doubted whether Trump had personally written that statement. He doubted even more whether Trump had actually read the report. (If he had, Trump would understand why an Arizona-style “forensic audit” would be pointless.) But this was cold comfort. In many ways, Trump was a stand-in for the constituents McBroom knew who insisted that the election was stolen, who raged against the scheming Democrats and the spineless Republicans, who believed that America was succumbing to an illegitimate leftist takeover. Progressives need to stop being stupid about voting laws
The New York Times, echoing the views of most liberals, says the Supreme Court is dismantling democracy piece by piece:
The latest blow came Thursday, when all six conservative justices voted to uphold two Arizona voting laws despite lower federal courts finding clear evidence that the laws make voting harder for voters of color — whether Black, Latino or Native American. One law requires election officials to throw out ballots that were cast in the wrong precinct; the other bars most people and groups from collecting voters’ absentee ballots and dropping them off at polling places.
This is starting to piss me off. Maybe the Supreme Court is bound and determined to take apart our voting laws no matter what, but the truth is that yesterday's ruling can be laid directly at the feet of liberals. This was just a stupid case to bring. You can't make a serious argument that there's anything really wrong with either a ban on ballot harvesting or with requiring voters to cast ballots in the right precinct.
More generally, this kind of stuff, along with voter ID laws, is popular with the public, and this has nothing to do with the alleged existence of voter fraud. Even if there's no fraud, the average Joe and Jane think ID laws make sense and are untroubled by common sense rules like being required to vote in the right precinct. Liberals will get nowhere by going after this stuff.
What's more, none of it matters. The actual effect of these rules on Black and Hispanic voter turnout turns out to be minuscule. It is a waste of time—maybe worse than just a waste of time—to yell and scream about these kinds of laws.
What really is bad are provisions of these laws that allow Republican legislatures to replace election officials they deem insufficiently loyal to the Republican cause. If you talk to moderate voters, they'll be shocked if you tell them about this. They'll agree that these provisions are outrageous.
So why do we spend so much time protesting the stuff that doesn't matter (and is popular) and so little time protesting the stuff that does matter (and is unpopular)? It is a vast mystery. And like I said, it's really starting to piss me off. If democracy is truly at stake here, wouldn't it make sense to be at least a little smart about trying to save it?

For good measure, McBroom added: “The Committee strongly recommends citizens use a critical eye and ear toward those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain.”
This reflected a pattern throughout the report—a clear and clinical statement of facts, accompanied by more animated language that expressed disgust with the grifters selling deception to the masses and disappointment with the voters who were buying it. Sitting at his dinner table, I told the senator that his writing occasionally took a tone of anger. He smirked. “I don’t know that I ever wrote angry,” McBroom replied. “But I tried to leave no room for doubt.”
So much for that. Soon after the report was released, Trump issued a thundering statement calling McBroom’s investigation “a cover up, and a method of getting out of a Forensic Audit for the examination of the Presidential contest.” The former president then published the office phone numbers for McBroom and Michigan’s GOP Senate majority leader, Mike Shirkey, urging his followers to “call those two Senators now and get them to do the right thing, or vote them the hell out of office!”
McBroom had grown up a “history nerd.” He idolized the revolutionary Founders. He inhaled biographies of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt. He revered the institution of the American presidency. And here was the 45th president, calling him out by name, accusing him of unthinkable treachery.
“Surreal,” McBroom said quietly. He leaned back, running his hands through a mess of sweaty blond hair. Then he folded his thick arms, which bulged from a red cutoff button-up shirt, staring heavenward in search of the words. Some 30 seconds went by. “Just … surreal.”
Perhaps trying to cheer himself, McBroom told me he doubted whether Trump had personally written that statement. He doubted even more whether Trump had actually read the report. (If he had, Trump would understand why an Arizona-style “forensic audit” would be pointless.) But this was cold comfort. In many ways, Trump was a stand-in for the constituents McBroom knew who insisted that the election was stolen, who raged against the scheming Democrats and the spineless Republicans, who believed that America was succumbing to an illegitimate leftist takeover. Oddly, he got it from somebody who has the same job he has in a different state. The lieutenant governor in Pennsylvania, a Democrat named John Fetterman said that he had taken on the challenge from Dan Patrick, and bingo, instantly, he hit pay dirt. He said he had bang up surefire evidence of an instance of real voter fraud in the 2020 election right in his home state of Pennsylvania and it was maybe not the kind of voter fraud his Texas counterpart was hoping for.
But John Fetterman tried to collect just the same. He said, hey, Lieutenant Governor Patrick, it`s me John Fetterman, your counterpart in Pennsylvania. I`d like to collect your handsome reward for reporting voter fraud. I`ve got a dude in Forty Fort PA who tried to have his dead mom vote for Trump.
Oddly, as far as we know, Pennsylvania`s lieutenant governor did not receive any of that reward money . . .

Biden said, “It’s no longer just about who gets to vote or making it easier to vote, but who gets to count the votes.” Many state legislatures have passed or are considering laws that would take election administration out of the hands of current election officials at the state level and assign them to more partisan overseers; they have written legislation that targets low-level election officials and makes them subject to penalties for actions such as mailing out unsolicited absentee-voting applications. Some longtime administrators have quit amid threats from legislators and the public, while others continue their work despite intimidation. In some states, lawmakers have tried to give themselves the power to override voters’ preferences under certain circumstances.
The premise of Biden’s speech seems to be that voters will uniformly be troubled by this. “Have you no shame?” he asked Republican officials. By now it should be clear that many do not. And they have cover, because many Republican voters back the changes. Polls find that between two-thirds and three-quarters of GOP voters don’t believe Biden is a legitimate president. Six in 10 Republicans think it’s more important to change laws to prevent fraud (which doesn’t happen) than to make voting easier, according to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll. At the grassroots level, GOP voters appear to strongly back many of the very things Biden warns against.
As for those Americans who are alarmed, they have scant power to do anything about it—including Biden, who offered little in the way of new ideas. He called for the Senate to pass the For the People Act, a massive voting bill, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, but both bills have been stalled by GOP filibusters in the Senate. Biden did not call on Senate Democrats to eliminate the filibuster or create a work-around for these bills, but even if he had, it wouldn’t have done much good; Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrats’ 49th and 50th votes in the chamber, have made clear that they oppose any changes.

Paper ballots cost next to nothing but are the most accurately-tallied way to vote. They can't be hacked electronically, and if they have a CoC they're accurate. And statistical audits ensure that large-scale fraud - perhaps like 2020 - won't go undetected.
But HR1 doesn't address that. Because the authors of HR1 don't want to fix the problems, they want to perpetuate them with, just with the addition their own brand of fraud-compliant loopholes.

I agree about paper ballots, they should stay. It's stupid easy to defraud voting machines or online voting.
What should really happen here is states should take more control over their own local politics and obviate the US federal govt. I know the argument against that has always been "but slavery" but slavery is not the issue on the table.
But more than any of that I think basically every regime post 2000 has been "would you trust this govt to change the way elections are done?"

Trump: Audit not big enough

Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to audit the 2020 election results in four of the state’s biggest counties apparently did not pass muster for former President Donald Trump.
“By allowing the Democrats to do what they do, it will make it much harder for the governor and other Republicans to win election in 2022 and into the future,” Trump said in a statement to the Texas Tribune on Wednesday. “Texas is a much redder state than anyone knows, but this is the way to make sure it turns blue.”
Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday, but his spokeswoman Renae Eze said in a statement to the Tribune that “Texas is conducting the largest forensic audit in the country.”
“We have all the tools necessary to conduct a full, comprehensive audit, and that process will address any irregularities and ensure all valid votes are counted,” she said.
Last week, Trump in a public letter had pushed Abbott — who the former president has endorsed ahead of the 2022 Republican primary — to add legislation to the Legislature’s special session agenda that would make it easier for counties to audit election results.
“Texans know voting fraud occurred in some of their counties,” Trump wrote in the letter, despite a lack of evidence of widespread fraud. “Let’s get to the bottom of the 2020 Presidential Election scam!”
Later that day, the Texas secretary of state’s office announced it would audit Collin, Dallas, Harris and Tarrant counties’ election results, without providing much detail.
The office clarified in a document released Tuesday night how the audit would work, and much of it was already required of counties as part of routine election procedure review. The second phase was set to begin in spring 2022 and would involve reviewing voting machine accuracy tests, lists of voters, training materials and other election-related documents.
But Trump has been specific about his demand from the get-go: He wants House Bill 16, authored by Rep. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, to be added to the special session call and approved.
The bill would require county clerks to convene a “election review advisory committee” to review 2020 election results from randomly selected precincts if a state or county party chair requested it. Other provisions would make it easier for candidates and others to request audits from their county clerk or the secretary of state. taylor.goldenstein@chron.com
