FBI Director Chris Wray on Thursday suggested "serious charges" are still coming in the criminal investigation of the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Asked whether the FBI was investigating Trump or his associate Roger Stone, Wray said he could neither confirm nor deny any FBI investigation.
"I'm talking about Mr. Big, Number One," said Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, referring to Trump. "Have you gone after the people who incited the riot?"
Wray responded: "I don't think it would be appropriate for me to be discussing whether or not we are or aren't investigating specific individuals." (Individuals who just so happened to threaten Wray with being fired if he investigated them while Trump was President. See White House counsel's office warned Trump not to fire Chris Wray. White House to Congress: Leave border wall funding to Texas, at up to $46M per mile
A day after Gov. Greg Abbott said the state of Texas would pick up where former President Donald Trump left off building a border wall, the White House urged Congress to cancel billions of dollars in funding for the wall — making it clear that Texas will likely be left to cover the tab on its own. The Biden administration said Friday that Trump spent as much $46 million per mile on some segments of the wall.
Officials said the administration will return $2 billion to military construction projects that the Trump administration had raided to fund the wall — including sending $22 million to build dining halls at Camp Bullis outside San Antonio.
The news comes after the Republican governor said he will detail his plans to have the state build the wall next week, so little is known about the scope of his plan or how he proposes to pay for it. (As you might guess, the Republican governor is a braying jackass, with no real way to keep his promises.)

Trump’s story is familiar. The history of the Jacobite movement (the name comes from the Latin for “James”) may be less so. James II (Stuart) became king upon the death of his brother, Charles II, in February 1685.
The parallels between the Stuarts and Trumps are personal, political, and structural. When I put the notion to Sir Tom Devine, the preeminent living Scottish historian, he first laughed uproariously. “I absolutely love this comparator,” he told me once he’d regained his composure. “The entrails of connections are so potent and so lovable.”
There are differences. James II was devout; Trump is not, though he has also found religion to be a powerful political force. James was also noted for his physical courage. But there are temperamental similarities between the men, says Daniel Szechi, a prominent historian of Jacobitism.
“Despite his many, many flaws, he was a better human being than Trump, but he shared some similar characteristics,” Szechi wrote in an email. “He was profoundly ignorant, had when young a libido the size of New York, believed he was on a mission from God, and maintained he was the true king even after the Parliaments of the three kingdoms had all deposed him, and, indeed, continued to believe the people of England still loved him despite all evidence to the contrary.”

Boehner spoke about Politics today compared with 30 years ago.
Boehner said the divide now is not left versus right, but radical right versus radical left, and the two major parties are as far apart as he has seen.
“In the end, this isn’t about our principles or policies — it’s about whether we’re going to govern or not,” he said. “The key is, where’s the common ground.”

The Price of No Consequences for Trump
Joe Biden and Merrick Garland are acting like Donald Trump was a crazy dream. But the threat to American democracy will only get worse the longer we ignore it.
The Biden administration and the Justice Department appear hellbent on restoring the (appearance of) normalcy, boring us to death, and getting past the days of a citizenry held captive to madcap Trump tweets. That’s why the administration is focusing on infrastructure, COVID relief, economic recovery, and the workaday acts of governance.
Except that alongside these acts of sleepy normalcy we see constant reminders of where Trump and we have been and where Trump and we are still heading. In the past few days we have learned—among other object horrors—that Donald Trump’s Justice Department seized metadata records for members of the House Intelligence Committee and their families, whom it suspected of leaking. We learned that Trump supporters have been leveling crippling death threats against state election workers who refused to alter the vote count in Trump's favor. We learned that White House counsel Don McGahn had been instructed to fire Robert Mueller. We learned that in 2019, Rudy Giuliani, acting in his capacity as Trump’s personal lawyer, pressed Ukraine to announce baseless investigations about alleged Ukrainian meddling in the 2016 election. And yet as Richard Painter and Claire O. Finkelstein showed last week, the Justice Department has worked to stymie investigations and litigation that would unearth at least some of these truths, in a quest to protect institutional prerogatives and values.
Perhaps this would all be understandable if we had actually turned a page. But this great unearthing taking place in the press right now has also revealed that Donald Trump and some of his (never disbarred) lawyers are presently insisting that he will be “reinstated” as president in August, that several Republican senators who lost in November will be swept back into office with him, that Trump is insisting that “audits” in Arizona and other states are going to trigger a nonexistent mechanism for his return to office. Oh and that huge numbers of Republicans believe him.
In other words, nothing about Trump that is meant to be over is actually over.
Three-quarters of Republicans continue to say that President Joe Biden was illegitimately elected. More than 60 percent say the election was “stolen from Trump.” When they’re asked who “the true President is right now,” most Republicans say it’s Trump. And more than 30 percent of Republicans reject a basic premise of democracy: that “the loser in an election must concede defeat.”
The problem is that this pile-up of multiple “big lies” about who won the election and how it was “stolen” and why it must be resisted and how Donald Trump will ultimately prevail is not just aimed at the ludicrous (but potentially violent) fantasy of reinstating him. The lies are also right now, today, the predicate for massive vote suppression initiatives in most states, resistance to Senate efforts to protect the vote in 2022 and beyond, and the frothing up of public discourse about violent insurrection.

If I was On Topic, the discussion wouldn't actually be about me and Trump. It would be why the people who vote for Trump voted for him. But we all have to be in the same room and there must be consequences for lying about why you voted for Trump. Here, at fireflyfans.net or at a White House Q&A with Donald Trump, lies can fly freely and completely confuse everything. 1kiki, have you ever posted some proof that you are actually not a Russian troll? You certainly have played the role of troll, but is that all you are? You give ever indication, every time you post, of being completely hollow, as if you are some ventriloquist's dummy. Reality Winner, Whistleblower on Russian Hacking, Is Released From Prison
Court filings make clear that Winner had wanted to make Americans aware that the government had concluded that Russia secretly tried to gain access to U.S. voting systems in 2016, contrary to what Trump said in 2017.
The injustice of her case was highlighted when Marina Butina, a Russian national, received an 18-month sentence in 2018 for trying to influence American political figures without registering as a foreign agent. It struck many observers as dumbfounding that an actual Russian agent would receive a lighter jail sentence than an American trying to reveal a secret Russian effort to alter the outcome of an election.

Trump's psychosis is still an "enormous danger"
For the past five years, some of America's and the world's foremost mental health experts have attempted to warn the public that Donald Trump was (and is) a dire threat to public safety.
Based on Trump's public behavior and other available information, these experts warned that he appears to be a malignant narcissist, a pathological liar who is obsessed with violence, irresponsible and impulsive and in total quite likely a sociopath or perhaps a psychopath.
Many Americans, including the country's political elites, would prefer to throw the Age of Trump down the memory well. But such acts of organized forgetting will not save them from the Trump-controlled Republican Party's escalating assaults on American democracy. Forgetting that mental health professionals predicted this about Trump’s Presidency and all it has wrought is an integral part of this campaign of national amnesia.
Trump still appears to be hatching half-baked schemes to remove Joe Biden from the presidency, even flirting with promises by his allies that he will somehow be "reinstated" as president later this year. Trump's followers, who comprise at least half of all Republican voters, have been convinced that he is still the legitimate president and that Biden is a usurper.
If there is someone who is ranting and raving about things that are obviously and demonstrably false yet insists that they are true, that is by definition delusional. If Trump were not a former president, he would be easily seen to be psychotic. Because he is a former president and has a cult following, we are expected to wonder if his behavior can be explained some other way.
A person can be delusional and no danger whatsoever to anyone else. But Trump is a sociopath. He is basically psychologically the same as the many infamous tyrants we know from recent and remote history. One living example is Kim Jong-un, who fascinated Trump. Love letters were exchanged between them.
What would happen if Donald Trump somehow became president again or otherwise assumed a position of national power?
Trump has already told us what he would do. When he was running against Hillary Clinton, he said that he wanted to "lock her up" in prison. That's what Trump would try to do if he were back in power. He seeks to be the same as the leader of North Korea, imprisoning or killing people if they dare to oppose him. With more power he is only going to get worse — more enraged, more paranoid, more psychotic, more violent and more dangerous. If he could, Donald Trump would turn America into a police state.

Signym, you are crazier than Trump.
‘Pure insanity’: Justice Dept. rebuffed Trump bid to overturn election
WASHINGTON, June 15 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump pressed the Justice Department during his waning weeks in office to join his failed effort to overturn his election defeat based on his false claims of voting fraud, but its leaders refused, with one decrying the “pure insanity” of the claims, documents released on Tuesday showed.
Records outlined a series of overtures made by the Republican former president, then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and an outside private attorney, Kurt Olsen, pushing the department to act on Trump's claims.
The department ultimately did not join the effort and numerous courts rejected lawsuits seeking to overturn election results in various states.
The department under outgoing Attorney General William Barr, who left his post on Dec. 23, and his short-term replacement Jeffrey Rosen decided not to act on the false claims of voting fraud. Biden took office on Jan. 21.

Trump, through an assistant, sent Rosen a Dec. 14 email with documents purporting to show evidence of election fraud in northern Michigan - a debunked allegation that a federal judge had already rejected.
Two weeks later, on Dec. 29, Trump's White House assistant emailed Rosen, who by then was the acting attorney general, and other Justice Department lawyers a draft legal brief that they were urged to file at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The department never filed the brief. Emails released by the House committee showed that Olsen, a Maryland lawyer involved in writing Trump's draft brief, repeatedly tried to meet with Rosen but was unsuccessful.

Donald Trump May Have a New Reason to Be Angry With Mike Pence
The former president does have the option to self-publish his memoirs (where he would have the freedom to say whatever he wants), or he can pursue an offer from conservative publisher Regnery, who recently signed Republican Senator Josh Hawley after he pushed back against the 2020 election results on Jan. 6. But the lack of enthusiasm from the publishers has to sting given the fact that former Vice President Mike Pence got a two-book contract with Simon & Schuster worth up to $4 million and former White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway was also courted to write about her time with Trump.
While New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted that Pence’s deal was “grating on him,” Trump’s spokesperson Jason Miller swears that Trump had “no issues” with Pence’s deal and was “fine with it,” per Politico. It still has to hurt his ego knowing that before his presidency, he authored 19 books and publishers were clamoring to work with him.
But that success happened when he was known as a successful businessman — not a divisive political figure. He’s likely going to have to be creative about getting his memoirs out because the traditional route has closed its doors.

Yep. American propaganda at work.
Only approved things may be read. And not publishing books is certainly far more efficient than burning them afterwards.

Quote:Trump wants a book deal like his V.P. Mike Pence got, millions of dollars upfront, before writing the book. Trump hasn't found a publisher that will pay what he wants. Since Trump is greedy, he will have to settle for Amazon selling his book:

Trump doesn't need Amazon because he is already selling caps, shirts, coffee mugs, and doormats. He could add books to www.donaldjtrump.com
It infuriates Trump that Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House, paid $15m for the rights to Bill Clinton’s 2004 memoirs My Life when he left the White House, while George W Bush made an estimated $10m from his book Decision Points, which was published by Crown. Trump would have a stroke if he knew Obama got $65m when Trump can't find anybody to publish his memoir. Even Putin won't touch Trump's book, unless Trump pays all the printing costs ahead of time.

Egotistical Trump, who must brag that he is the best and highest paid author, wants a publisher to pay him, upfront, more than $15m that Bill Clinton made, $10m George W Bush made, and $65m Obama made. The publishers are telling Trump loud and clear: "NO! YOU ARE NOT WORTH IT!" because the people who voted for Trump don't buy many books, especially not expensive books. Obama's A Promised Land sells for $23.23. Trump's Believe Me will have to sell for twice that and people won't pay because the book will be the product of a ghostwriter, not written by Trump.

Trump claims to be writing “the book of all books,” and insists that his memoir has prestigious suitors. In a statement last Friday, he claimed to have received and rejected two offers “from the most unlikely of publishers”; in a second statement on Monday, he said, “Two of the biggest and most prestigious publishing houses have made very substantial offers, which I have rejected.” Senior sources at the Big Five tell Politico that no such offers have been extended.
The first ex-president to publish a memoir during his lifetime was James Buchanan, who retired from public office in disgrace in 1861, leaving behind a nation torn asunder by slavery and the impending secession of the southern states. Buchanan’s memoir was abysmal, according to presidential historian Craig Fehrman, author of Author in Chief: The Untold Story of Our Presidents and the Books They Wrote. “Buchanan’s is definitely the worst presidential memoir I’ve read,” Fehrman told Smithsonian Magazine. “It’s mostly just James Buchanan trying to blame everyone except James Buchanan for the war and its aftermath.”
How fitting that Buchanan would set the precedent now reaching its apex with Donald Trump, his successor for the title of American history’s worst president.

You'd think that Crown Publishing Group under would be looking to make some of that Cuomo money back. Because unless they were charging $102 per copy, they've lot their ass on that deal.
But at least Penguin Random House doesn't have to defend to its shareholders why buying out Crown Publishing Group in October of 2018 was still a good idea, since Penguin Random House/Crown Publishing Group is 100% owned by international media, services, and education company Bertelsmann based in the U.K. since December of 2019.
That's right. Most of the books you buy and your kids are getting in school are published by one foreign company.

A week after the January 6th insurrection, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy rebuked Trump. McCarthy, nicknamed “my Kevin” by Trump, had been one of the many Republicans in thrall to Trump. He held his tongue when asked about the latest Trump scandal, and parroted Trump’s baseless attacks on the integrity of the 2020 election. McCarthy was forced into hiding in the Capitol complex during the insurrection, during which Trump reportedly called him to complain that the rioters were “more upset about the election than you are.” Now, McCarthy demanded Trump ensure a smooth transition to Joe Biden’s presidency and suggested censuring Trump.
But within days, McCarthy changed his tune. Appearing on Fox News, he mounted a tortured defense of the president’s actions on January 6th.
This whitewashing quickly spread throughout the GOP, fueled by conservative media outlets such as Fox and Newsmax. Republican lawmakers have sought to recast the whole event — despite the staggering amount of evidence to come out of that tragedy, much of it produced by the insurrectionists themselves — as a bunch of “peaceful patriots” and harmless tourists getting harassed by the police. This mass delusion extends all the way to the top: Senate Republicans led by Minority Leader McConnell filibustered a bill to create a bipartisan 9/11 Commission-style investigation of the events of January 6th. Right on cue, Trump himself came out in opposition to the commission with the solemnity we’ve come to expect from him, blasting the bill as a “Democrat trap.”
“There was an opportunity after January 6th to say, ‘Wow, what happened here?’?” Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) tells me. “What happened at the Capitol was shameful.?.?.?.?We needed to recognize we had led ourselves down a dark and dangerous road.” Instead, he says, the pro-Trump faction clung to the Big Lie of election fraud, saying: “?‘Well, what are you talking about? We won.’?”

Quote:If Trump's memoir would be such a money maker, then Trump should publish and print it himself, sell it from his website, and keep all the profits. That way, Trump cuts out all the middlemen, all the editorial control that a book publisher would force on Trump. Trump can then take all the credit for making the Trump memoir, named Believe Me, the most perfect book in history.

The last few days have seen revelations about how close Trump and his allies came to nullifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. Donald Trump’s agents were pressuring the Department of Justice to intervene by “proving” that Biden won the election because of widespread “voter fraud.” Documents obtained by the House Oversight and Reform Committee include a draft memo that was to be submitted by the Department of Justice to the Supreme Court which argued that the 2020 Election results should be nullified.
Questions still remain about the events of January 6, such as why dozens of repeated warnings about a violent attack by Trump’s followers on the Capitol were ignored.
Instead of speaking plainly and directly about the Trump regime’s coup, many in the mainstream news media, and among America’s political class more generally, have avoided using such language. When the coup was imminent, they dismissed it as something “impossible” and “ridiculous” and “fearmongering” by people afflicted with “Trump derangement syndrome.” When the coup and attack on the Capitol finally occurred, many of those same voices called it an “insurrection” or a “mob action” by Trump supporters who “didn’t really have a plan.” This is incorrect: Trump’s attack force included highly motivated and trained elements who acted in a precise fashion with the goal of capturing Mike Pence, whom they threatened to kill, along with other Republicans deemed to be “traitors” and Democrats. Trump’s attack force was attempting to disrupt the certification of Biden’s victory with the goal of creating the conditions for Trump to declare a national state of emergency.

Quote:The evidence keeps piling up, and is now crystal clear. Donald Trump, Mark Meadows and their allies were dead serious about overturning the election and installing a coup-driven presidency. Trump's conversation on January with Kevin McCarthy makes it clear that if this took many deaths of members of Congress and even Mike Pence, that was a price he would pay. There is undoubtedly more to come, including with top officials at DOD. We came much closer to a genuine violent coup than we knew.

I think a number of factors have normalized the coup for many people in the U.S. For one thing, political violence has already been normalized through mass shootings and the gun violence epidemic, which are propped up by the Republican Party and the NRA. Another factor is that most people in America haven't had to deal with the realities of authoritarianism, so to them, they're still expecting an exit ramp and some return to normalcy.
