The previous President Trump resited lockdowns but then restrictions and lockdowns started happening during his Presidency. The Biden admin seems to push for lockdowns, Trump later had claimed that the British system was facing "catastrophic" results from the herd immunity strategy, something Sweden also tried but finally started to U-turn on their policy.

New York then joined California in lockdown as US National Guard was deployed against coronavirus, thousands of deaths in Nursing Homes some of which may have been covered up. Trump also announced the closing of the Mexican border to most travel but not trade, also the closer of the US Canadian bode5r. Cuomo then said on tv all workers in nonessential businesses must stay home as much as possible, and police will be used to block people, all gatherings of any size will be banned, fines, jailing etc Spain has locked down its 46 million citizens and France ordered the closing of just about everything. Spanish, German and French cities look emptied, the streets of Spanish cities where there was once business and tourism were now deserted. Spain’s highly decentralized system of administration has been replaced with direct rule from Madrid.

There are parts of Asia NOT in Lockdown, South Korea and Taiwan, which have consistently used highly organized mass testing, contact tracing, public messaging and selective quarantining to identify and selectively isolate outbreaks, Brazil also has no lockdown but it is reported to have terrible death numbers. As a measure to limit the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Philippines, lockdowns, officially characterized as "community quarantines" by the government, of varying strictness were imposed in numerous parts of the country. The Government of India divided all the districts into three zones based on the spread of the virus—green, red and orange—with relaxations applied accordingly. There is now an element of protest, conspiracy movements, protests by restaurant owners, students and taxi drivers, there have been riots in Holland Netherlands for a number of days.

Now we have mutant strains, they say evolution mutations of Corona appeared in London England, South Africa and Brazil.

There might also be other factors at play during the lockdowns
South Korea while it did not fully lockown they cleaned and bleached the streets, they began developing mass testing capacity and isolation medical infrastructure.

The Countries that did not officially Lockdown include Iceland, S.Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, and parts of the United States, although these countries may have also placed restrictive measures inside regions of their nations.

I truly have zero invovlement in other countries' internal politics and policies. Whatever they do about their leaders, their political parties, their economies, their minorities, their religions, and even their COVID-19 imo is up to them. (I draw the line at them attacking the US - but I also draw the line at the US attacking them.)

That doesn't mean to me that we can't discuss them as real-world examples and factual data for our own information and understanding.

There are a few countries on the planet that are surrounded by ocean-sized moats, making physical isolation from many things a genuine possibility. Australia, NZ, and to some extent Singapore are a few examples.

That geography puts them in a vastly different situation than most of the other countries on the planet, isolated by nature and able to easily close their borders.

The exact opposite of them is Belgium, with is essentially a city surrounded by suburbs of workers, who happen to live in other countries. In fact, Belgium is so highly interconnected with surrounding countries and their people, its daytime population is double its nighttime population.

So while Australia, NZ, and Singapore had 0.04, 0.02, 0.10 new cases per thousand per week November 1, 2020; and the EU had 46.9 new cases per thousand per week at that time, Belgium had 154.4 new cases per thousand per week then.

My point is that, looking at data across many different countries, its clear to see that closing borders before you have any or many internal COVID-19 cases makes a vital difference in whether or not you can get good control over a pandemic. But the geographies of different countries is a vital factor in what potential options are available to any country.

The advent of vaccines was a watershed event. Because while they were never designed to prevent disease or transmission (they were designed solely to reduce serious illness and deaths), they do prevent about 2/3 of illnesses, so transmission is reduced by almost 2/3 in a vaccinated population. And serious illnesses and deaths are reduced to about 1% previous levels. And that's a good thing!
