I won't argue that there's no excuse to not make proper preparations to avoid this in the future though. Especially since there is so much damage already and the large amount of things that need to be replaced anyway.
There's no arguing the last month of our winter sucked all the way up here, but at least we're prepared for it since winter typically sucks here. Even though this one was the worst on record since the early 80's, we had the infrastructure to deal with it promptly.
I can't imagine what it would be like to be so cold in your house that going outside of your house is warmer, and not being able to go to a neighbor's house because they're in the same boat. Especially if you couldn't get in your car and drive anywhere because there isn't a goddamned snow plow for the streets in the entire state.
That being said, I would suggest that everybody do their own part to protect themselves in the future. Invest in a generator, and service it regularly. You will likely almost never use it, but when you need to it's the most valuable tool you'll ever own.
Also keep a good amount of gasoline on hand and rotate the stock every once in a while so you know it's going to serve you when you need it. Throw a bit of Stabil in it too.

On Thursday, Abbott called for a state law requiring power plants to be better weatherized. Yet over the past quarter-century, state leaders have refused to require the companies to prepare for severe weather, even as once-in-a-lifetime storms have arrived with increasing frequency.
Critics say the utility commission’s move to strip away a regulatory layer, especially with potentially severe weather approaching, was just the latest example of the consistently light touch Texas politicians have used to oversee the complex industry that generates and distributes power.

WELL, there have been "once in a hundred years" events happening all over the USA... a couple of "once in a hundred years" north midwestern floods happening back-to-back, "once in hundred years" (actually, once in six hundred years) drought in CA, never- before seen numbers of Cat5 hurricanes etc. And if you look at Arctic warming, permafrost is melting and exposing many-thousand-year-old artefacts and carcasses and causing never before seen blowholes of methane. Also, glacial melting is at never before seen extent, threatening major water supplies and exposing many-thousand year old carcasses.

Nearly half of Republicans wouldn’t hesitate to drop the GOP and join a new party led by former President Donald Trump, according to a Suffolk University/USA Today poll of Trump voters released Sunday. The poll revealed that 46 percent said they would abandon their party while only 27 percent said they wouldn’t drop the GOP. The rest are undecided. Half of the Trump voters polled said that the GOP should be “more loyal to Trump.” Only 19 percent said the opposite and think the Republican Party should be less loyal to Trump. “We feel like Republicans don’t fight enough for us, and we all see Donald Trump fighting for us as hard as he can, every single day,” a small-business owner from Milwaukee said.
The poll showed that Trump voters are far more loyal to the former president than to the Republican Party. While 54 percent of those polled said they were loyal to Trump, only 34 percent said they were loyal to the party. The figures put into sharp focus the dilemma that Republican leaders are facing as they try to adjust to a post-Trump world.

USA Today and Suffolk University conducted a survey of 1,000 Trump voters, identified via 2020 polls, in the past week. The results reaffirm that lies are now part of the bedrock of the Republican Party. Riot denialism, for example:
"Most Trump voters embrace a version of events on Jan. 6 that has been debunked by independent fact checkers and law enforcement agencies," USA Today's Susan Page wrote Sunday. "Asked to describe what happened during the assault on the Capitol, 58% of Trump voters call it 'mostly an antifa-inspired attack that only involved a few Trump supporters.' That's more than double the 28% who call it 'a rally of Trump supporters, some of whom attacked the Capitol.' Four percent call it 'an attempted coup inspired by President Trump.'"
