Parler, the social network popular with Trump supporters, is trickling back to life.
The social network went offline last week after Amazon booted it from its computer servers for not consistently removing violent posts, an accusation that Parler denied. But after a week in which Parler executives sued Amazon and predicted that their site might never return, they are forecasting it will be back up and running by the month’s end.
That turnabout is thanks, in part, to a Russian company.
Parler has entered into business with DDoS-Guard, a Russian firm that routes internet traffic and protects websites from cyberattacks. With its help, visitors to Parler.com now find a basic webpage with a promise from Parler’s chief executive, John Matze, that “our return is inevitable.”
But the use of a Russian company is worrying some researchers who study the internet and Russia. If Parler routes its web traffic through DDoS-Guard when its full website returns, the experts said, Russian law could enable the Russian government to surveil Parler’s users.
Alina Polyakova, head of the Center for European Policy Analysis, a foreign policy think tank in Washington, said Russia required many internet companies in the country to install technology that feeds the government a copy of much of the data that passes through their computer servers.
The surveillance system, known as the System for Operative Investigative Activities, “basically allows the Russian government to intercept any data on Russian territory and provide that data to the F.S.B.,” Russia’s domestic intelligence agency, said Ms. Polyakova, who has studied Russia’s control over the internet. She added that it was unclear if DDoS-Guard would be subject to such surveillance.
The Russian Embassy in Washington and DDoS-Guard did not respond to requests for comment. In an email to CNN, DDoS-Guard said it “does not provide any customer information or any other data to the government authorities, excluding cases explicitly stated in the law.”
Jeffrey Wernick, Parler’s chief operating officer, said in an interview that the concerns were overblown because DDoS-Guard supported only a temporary webpage for Parler. He said Parler would try to find other companies to operate its full social network.
“Our preference is to have an American firm,” he said. “People should not make conclusions that it’ll be this company. People extrapolate too much and with limited information. They conclude what they want to conclude. I call that spreading misinformation.”
But finding willing partners has been a challenge for Parler since the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
After supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol, Twitter and Facebook barred Mr. Trump from their services. That sent a flood of new people to Parler, pushing it past 15 million users. Then Apple and Google removed Parler’s app from their app stores and Amazon stopped hosting Parler’s website on its servers because, they said, Parler was not consistently removing violent posts. In addition to denying those claims, Parler accused the companies of collusion.
Since then, other companies have rebuffed Parler. Mr. Matze said in a court filing on Monday that “at least six extremely large potential providers” refused to take Parler’s business because they feared cyberattacks or believed Parler hosted incitements to violence.
“Parler is an internet company that cannot get on the internet,” Parler’s lawyer, David Groesbeck, said in a separate filing on Monday. “And the longer Parler lies dead, the harder it will be to resuscitate.”
Yet in statements to the press, Parler executives are predicting a full return by the end of January. Mr. Wernick declined to say how Parler would do that, but he attributed the confidence to a “herculean effort” by his team.
“We’re not sleeping,” he said. “We’re working day and night, and every day. There is no

It ISN'T free speech to yell fire in a theater, and it's STILL NOT free speech to organize attacks on government.

AFAIK there were no "attacks on government" organized on Parler, because there were no "attacks on government" carried out in DC... altho there WERE plenty carried out elsewhwere, like Portland, Seattle, etc. THOSE were organized on FB and Twitter, so maybe FB and Twitter should be demolished?

A group of violent demonstrators gathered in Southeast Portland on Wednesday afternoon, hours after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in at the US Capitol. The leftist anti-government group appeared displeased with the new administration as they attacked the building of the Democratic Party of Oregon.
Local news KGW reports the group of at least 100 people, dressed in all black, marched through Portland.

I wonder if somebody has made a "It's not free speech to yell FIRE in a theater" compilation video yet. The legacy media must be parroting that line dozens of times a day judging on how many times I've seen it posted in here recently.
Is dumb terminal too dated a phrase to explain them?
How about walking, talking Wi-Fi hot-spots.

I think they do that because even though it's true and always will be, Dumptards are either too stupid to understand it or like to act like they don't so they have something to rail against. "Muh Free Speech!" Or they have an anti-American agenda. Take your pick.

I remember back in the early days of RWED, when SIG was almost cool and almost a liberal, seeing her post that. In fact, I think her posting it was the first time I'd seen it. Funny how times change!

Lying or stupid or both? "Hang Mike Pence!" "Where's Pelosi!" Capital building invaded - thank god there were no attacks on the government.
More importantly, what you "But Muh Free Speech!" whiners still don't get (or like to ignore), is businesses don't want to take even the remotest chance they will be caught up in any lawsuits or legal attacks resulting from - gee I dunno - people breaking into the Capital of the United States that resulted in 5 people dead. I truly believe they feel like they dodged a lawsuit bullet. Why else will no one the US fund Parler on a US network? There's tons of money to be made from Dumptards, so it would be profitable - Dump proved that when he fleeced them out of millions. Maybe Zuckerberg doesn't want to go to jail, maybe? There's liability for days and just as many lawyers who would love to hang them for it.

Whatever - it's always too much to ask you to think things through (whichever 6ix you happen to be).
You just described yourself, btw - you keep burying your head.
WHY aren't any US Trump supporters with money, stepping up to put Parler online? Would it be okay if Al Qaeda or ISIS used FB / Twitter to plan an attack on our capital? Would you say we should protect their "Free Speech?" If that were to happen, or would you say FB / Twitter should have closed their accounts? These aren't tough questions but I think I can already hear you running.

These are the violent threats that made Amazon drop Parler
A new filing reveals Amazon’s concerns, raised weeks before the Capitol raid
By Russell Brandom Jan 13, 2021, 10:17am EST
Amazon’s decision to suspend Parler’s service has provoked ongoing debate about AWS’s power as a hosting provider and whether such suspensions pose a threat to free speech. But while many had seen the suspension as a knee-jerk response to the mob attack on the US Capitol, Amazon’s response makes clear that the service had lodged complaints with Parler long before the raid.
“AWS reported to Parler, over many weeks, dozens of examples of content that encouraged violence,” the company argues in the filing, “including calls to hang public officials, kill Black and Jewish people, and shoot police officers in the head,”
To drive home this point, the complaint includes 15 examples of such posts, which include graphic calls to violence against tech CEOs, school teachers, and professional athletes. In some cases, the comments also refer to specific dates and targets for violence, encouraging users to form militia groups and “acquire targets.”
Amazon says it submitted more than 100 such comments to Parler in the weeks leading up to the suspension.
Content warning: these threats are graphic, violent, and racist; use discretion.

The filing gives more background to Amazon’s previous claims that the suspension was in response to escalating calls for violence on Parler.
“It is clear that there is significant content on Parler that encourages and incites violence against others, and that Parler is unable or unwilling to promptly identify and remove this content, which is a violation of our terms of service,” the company said in a statement on January 9th. “We made our concerns known to Parler over a number of weeks and during that time we saw a significant increase in this type of dangerous content, not a decrease, which led to our suspension of their services Sunday evening.”
In the filing, Amazon emphasized that it had suspended service rather than terminating it entirely and was open to restoring service to Parler if the company began moderating content in compliance with AWS’s terms of service.
Apple CEO Tim Cook made a similar point on Wednesday in an appearance on CBS, explaining that Apple had removed Parler from the iOS App Store because of its failure to moderate its content according to Apple’s terms. “All we’re asking is he meet the Terms of Service,” said Cook. “Our hope is that they do that and get back on the store.”

The difference is that Antifa/BLM caused millions of dollars of damage, and the DNChas the power to make their threats come true.

This Site Published Every Face From Parler's Capitol Riot Videos
Faces of the Riot used open source software to detect, extract, and deduplicate every face from the 827 videos taken from the insurrection on January 6.

WHEN HACKERS EXPLOITED a bug in Parler to download all of the right-wing social media platform's contents last week, they were surprised to find that many of the pictures and videos contained geolocation metadata revealing exactly how many of the site's users had taken part in the invasion of the US Capitol building just days before. But the videos uploaded to Parler also contain an equally sensitive bounty of data sitting in plain sight: thousands of images of unmasked faces, many of whom participated in the Capitol riot. Now one website has done the work of cataloging and publishing every one of those faces in a single, easy-to-browse lineup.
Late last week, a website called Faces of the Riot appeared online, showing nothing but a vast grid of more than 6,000 images of faces, each one tagged only with a string of characters associated with the Parler video in which it appeared. The site's creator tells WIRED that he used simple open source machine learning and facial recognition software to detect, extract, and deduplicate every face from the 827 videos that were posted to Parler from inside and outside the Capitol building on January 6, the day when radicalized Trump supporters stormed the building in a riot that resulted in five people's deaths. The creator of Faces of the Riot says his goal is to allow anyone to easily sort through the faces pulled from those videos to identify someone they may know or recognize who took part in the mob, or even to reference the collected faces against FBI wanted posters and send a tip to law enforcement if they spot someone.
"Everybody who is participating in this violence, what really amounts to an insurrection, should be held accountable," says the site's creator, who asked for anonymity to avoid retaliation. "It's entirely possible that a lot of people who were on this website now will face real-life consequences for their actions."
Aside from the clear privacy concerns it raises, Faces of the Riot's indiscriminate posting of faces doesn't distinguish between lawbreakers—who trampled barriers, broke into the Capitol building, and trespassed in legislative chambers—and people who merely attended the protests outside. An upgrade to the site today adds hyperlinks from faces to the video source, so that visitors can click on any face and see what the person was filmed doing on Parler. The Faces of the Riot creator, who says he's a college student in the "greater DC area," intends that added feature to help contextualize every face's inclusion on the site and differentiate between bystanders, peaceful protesters, and violent insurrectionists.
He concedes that he and a cocreator are still working to scrub "non-rioter" faces, including those of police and press who were present. A message at the top of the site also warns against vigilante investigations, instead suggesting users report those they recognize to the FBI, with a link to an FBI tip page. "If you go on the website and you see someone you know, you might lear
