Fox News Identity Crisis: Indulge Trump’s Election Conspiracy or Reject It … and Watch Its Audience Flee?

Fox News has projected Joe Biden to have won the election— well, its news division has.
Simultaneously, the network’s top-rated opinion hosts have continued to entertain the increasingly loony conspiracy theory that the election was stolen from Trump through widespread voter fraud. They have been careful in their words, but the near-constant amplification of baseless allegations of a rigged or stolen election has lent credibility to the InfoWars-esque conspiracy theories being touted by Trump. The same theories mocked behind closed doors are being laughed out of courtrooms.
The growing disconnect between the two sides of Fox News programming reveals its current identity crisis and raises a question about their immediate future. Do they want to be a news outlet where facts, as disappointing as they may be, are paramount? Or an information entertainment company that today solely acts as cheerleaders for outgoing President Donald Trump?
This dissonance was neatly illustrated last weekend when Maria Bartiromo, a Fox News anchor and ardent Trump booster, who had just given the platform of her Sunday morning show to Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell. Both laid out wild and unproven conspiracy theories and claimed that Trump was the rightful winner of the election. Bartiromo seemed pleased to hear the news and never once challenged her guests on their claims, simply accepting their claim that they had evidence as evidence enough.
But just an hour or so later, Fox News NEWS reporter Eric Shawn filed a thorough report that effectively debunked every single claim that had been presented as real on Bartiromo’s show. It was yet another look at Fox News schizophrenia, and viewers who watched both segments surely endured intense whiplash.
A similar moment occurred when Fox News host Pete Hegseth reported on-air that “So far, state election officials have not reported serious irregularities with the vote that would affect the outcome of the race.” Immediately after, the Trump-boosting host added, “That was in the teleprompter. I read it. I don’t know if I even believe it.”
No wonder that a recent poll found 70% of Republicans believe President Donald Trump was cheated out of the election. Where do those Republicans get their news? Outlets like Newsmax are certainly a venue, but the top hosts at Fox — Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham — remain the most prominent source for the president’s supporters.
Trump alone is not responsible for such vast indoctrination. His baseless claims of a stolen election are just unhinged musings in the absence of a pro-Trump media taking them seriously.
To get it out of the way: No serious person believes that Trump actually won the election until it was stolen from him through a mass conspiracy, as Trump’s legal team is arguing. These arguments are made mostly outside of court, since now nearly all of their 30-plus or so legal challenges have been dismissed. Nonetheless, the massive audience of Fox News prime time is being told, night after night, that there is reason to suspect foul play.
Why?
To put it simply: Fox News is in a very uncomfortable bed of its own making. Telling its viewers that Trump is full of it and that the insane conspiracy theories he is pushing are meritless could prove lethal to the bottom line. The news division’s efforts to dispel these increasingly loony conspiracies have enraged viewers, driving them to outlets like Newsmax and OANN, where Trump is the true victor of the 2020 election.

Trump did not materialize from the ether. He rose from a political party bent on thwarting demographic change by subverting the democratic process; a party whose base was addicted to white identity politics, steeped in religious fundamentalism, and suffused with authoritarian cravings—a party which, infected by Trumpism, now spreads the multiple malignancies metastasized by Trump’s personal and political pathologies.
Since the civil rights revolution triggered an influx of resentful Southern whites, the GOP has catered to white grievance and anxiety. Trump’s transformative contribution has been to make racial antagonism overt—a badge of pride that bonds him to his followers in opposition to a pluralist democracy that threatens their imperiled social and political hegemony.
Hence the 2019 tweet in which America’s president told four congresswomen of color—three native-born Americans and one a naturalized citizen—that they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” With poisonous efficiency, Trump managed to combine racism, xenophobia, and hostility to non-white immigrants to inflame his followers’ antagonism against “the other.”
He comprehends his audience all too well. Take the poll released last week by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) measuring the attitudes of “Fox News Republicans”—the 40 percent of party adherents who trust Fox as their primary source of TV news. The survey found that 91 percent oppose the Black Lives Matter movement; 90 percent believe that police killings of blacks are “isolated incidents”; and 58 think that whites are victimized by racial discrimination, compared to 36 percent who think blacks are.

Throughout this post-election period, the reaction from congressional Republicans has been entirely predictable. Mostly they've remained mum about the demented behavior of their president during the last month as he has continued his precipitous dive into a rabbit hole filled with conspiracy theories so delusional that it calls for medical intervention. A few have stepped up to say publicly that Trump has a "right" to pursue legal remedies in court, while privately assuring reporters that the president just needs to act out a little bit before he finally can emotionally accept what's happened to him.
His stalwart manservant, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., initially involved himself in Trump's attempts to strong-arm state officials into throwing out legitimate votes in order to help him win. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has evidently been poring over some alleged statistical analysis he found on a dodgy website, and has convinced himself there's something hinky about votes that were counted after midnight. And Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, the man Trump once accused of stealing the Iowa caucuses back in 2016, now wants the Supreme Court to take up one of the president's absurd cases.
This isn't the first time a demagogue and conspiracy-monger has captured the Republican Party. CNN's Ron Brownstein has pointed out the unpleasant parallels between the way the GOP establishment kowtowed to Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare of the '40s and '50s and their servile acquiescence to Trump's malignant narcissism. In fact, this seems to be a permanent strain in American conservatism:

The Washington Post has surveyed the 249 Republicans serving in the House of Representatives and the Senate to get them to answer a simple question: Did Joe Biden win the presidential election? The newspaper was able to find only 27 congressional Republicans who were willing to affirm this simple truth. Of the remaining 222 congressional Republicans, two declared Trump had won, and 220 (approximately 88 percent of all congressional Republicans) refused to say who won. The details of who is willing to acknowledge reality is even more dismaying. As the newspaper details, “Of the 15 House Republicans who recognize the true winner, six are retiring from politics at the end of this month and two more represent districts that Biden won convincingly.”
Many Republican voters share this unwillingness to accept Biden’s victory. On Friday, a Washington Post article reported that “A Nov. 13-17 Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 68 percent of Republicans (+/-5) say that the 2020 presidential election was rigged. A Monmouth poll carried out between Nov. 12 and Nov. 16 finds that 61 percent of Republicans (+/-3.5) are ‘not at all confident’ that the election was fair and accurate.”

The ongoing rejection of political norms and protocol, plus the continued ideological symbiosis between mainstream GOP and fringe extremists, sows fertile ground for violence, according to experts. GOP elected officials are giving an air of legitimacy to a conspiracy movement that started on the fringes, which in turn emboldens the fringe.

The Republican Party is destined to be a reactionary party, but that’s not necessarily a negative thing. If you think America has taken a wrong turn and needs some serious changes, that’s certainly reactionary, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Reactionaries can sometimes be right.
The grievance question is hard, though. There are conservatives like Julius Krein, who edits the American Affairs journal, that are trying to make something substantive out of Trumpism. Krein, for example, argues that populists need technocrats, too. You can’t just run a government on anti-elite grievances. You need people who know how the government works and can take the somewhat inchoate grievances of the populists and turn them into a policy agenda that actually answers those grievances. I think that’s absolutely right, but it’s really, really hard to pull off because a politics of grievance alienates the people you need to join it in order to turn it in this constructive direction.
The problem for Republicans is they represent the grievances of 48 percent of the country. If you represent the grievances of 60 percent of the country, then it’s easier to govern. But the grievances of a not-quite-majority is a very different thing. It’s a lot harder to build anything with 48 percent support. That’s not exactly a Reagan-level coalition.

Aguirre later claimed to police that he was part of a civilian-led “investigation” into voter fraud allegations. In the months running up to the election, President Donald Trump and his allies repeatedly spread unfounded claims about massive voter fraud, particularly related to mail-in ballots. At a September presidential debate, Trump claimed, without evidence, that votes for him had been discovered in creeks and rivers.
The bizarre details in Aguirre’s case serve as a reminder of how conspiracy theories and disinformation can spur believers to real-world action—sometimes with violent, even deadly consequences.
“He crossed the line from dirty politics to commission of a violent crime, and we are lucky no one was killed,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement. “His alleged investigation was backward from the start—first alleging a crime had occurred and then trying to prove it happened.”

Hotze was part of a Republican group that unsuccessfully sued to have 127,000 ballots which were cast at drive-through voting locations in Harris County thrown out in what county officials described as an "un-American attempt to disenfranchise voters." A judge ultimately rejected their lawsuit but the effort successfully derailed the county's plans to have multiple drive-through voting locations on Election Day.
Hotze was also part of a Republican group that unsuccessfully sued to block Gov. Greg Abbott, a fellow Republican, from extending early voting amid the coronavirus pandemic. Aguirre said in an affidavit filed in the suit that he was part of an investigation into a "wide-ranging and fraudulent ballot harvesting scheme."
