I first saw it in a theater too. A friend and her husband and I went out on her birthday to take in a movie and that was the film we settled on.

It must have impacted you too. I probably can only actually remember the circumstances of maybe a dozen or two movies I've seen in the theaters over my life, even though I've probably seen a few hundred.
For years I didn't even know that it was a Trilogy. My old man rented Temple of Doom for us when we were real little and it was just about the most exciting thing I'd seen up to that point. We were super stoked to see The Last Crusade when it came out.
But without the internet I had no idea that Raiders of the Lost Ark was a thing until about 5 years after I saw the third one. It happens to be my least favorite of the three. Not that it's bad, but I was a bit older when I saw it. I was seeing it through different lenses by then.

My friend and I really enjoyed it but not her husband. But then we both like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.
I first saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on VHS as I couldn't get to a theater at the time. Saw it because of Harrison Ford and the character being an archaeologist, well that had my attention.
It was a good film and I enjoyed it. I saw "Temple of Doom" but wasn't that impressed with it. Thought they were trying too hard with the character.
But the trilogy really picked up with "The Last Crusade."
Edited to add: Not sure how many films I have seen in the theater. Not a whole lot when I was under the age of 10. Most films I've seen in the theater have been when I was in high school and my 20s.

That scene would be "Temple of Doom". The second film where Indy picked up a child sidekick.

Yeah. Everybody wants to pretend that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is when the series lost its realism, but I don't think it ever really was based much in reality.
I'd never seen the 4th movie, but I'm not a big fan of CGI unless it's done extremely well, and not something I'd want to see in an Indiana Jones flick. Leave that for Sci-Fi stuff like Edge of Tomorrow that couldn't possibly be done without it, I say.

No, I don't think any of the series is based in reality. Now if they made Indy a treasure hunter then you have a reason for hocus pocus.
I haven't seen the 4th film as I have heard too many bad things about it.

The bad things I heard probably weren't as bad as they say. They regularly crap on great movies like Waterworld because it's cool to crap on them.
But from what I'd seen of the CGI, it was overused for the application IMO. I could get past that if it were still a good movie.
But at the end of the day, the idea of watching Grandpa Indy just wasn't very appealing to me. He was a superhero to me when I was a kid. Indiana Jones wasn't ever supposed to get old. And if they didn't do yet another Hollywood cash grab, he never would have.

I didn't think I was missing anything by not seeing the movie. So not worrying about it.
Indiana Jones to me was a great adventure story. That aspect I enjoyed very much. And didn't too much special effects to get the story across.
Happens to a lot of movie series.
