I'd never seen the 4th movie, but I'm not a big fan of CGI unless it's done extremely well, and not something I'd want to see in an Indiana Jones flick. Leave that for Sci-Fi stuff like Edge of Tomorrow that couldn't possibly be done without it, I say.

I haven't seen the 4th film as I have heard too many bad things about it.
The Ark of The Covenant is an actual historical idol.
Another Religious Artifact, The Holy Grail, was the subject of The DaVinci Code. Other mop-up duty goes to Tomb Raider and Hooten and The Lady, neither of which focus on Religious Artifacts.
But Raiders did manage to kick off the genre. It's time period was WWII, but I think the others were all present day.

Yes, I know a bit about the Ark now long after seeing the film "Raiders". *L*
"Raiders" was WWII but then "Temple" had to still be set during the war as "Last Crusade" still had Nazis. That would put "Crystal Skull" during the '50s as it partially happened in a divided Germany. As I said I've not seen it but my Blair did and told me a bit about it.
