In earlier comics, robot is always in silhouette, is man-size, and it is firing a gun which never misses. One target was Mal's badge. Mal believed he was lucky that his badge stopped the bullet. Nope, it was deliberate. The only feature on its "head" is a big smile with glowing teeth. The comics never showed it in good light but if it had been, it would not be mistaken for a human. See the last page of #16 for a good look at mechanical arms and legs on a humanoid robot. The robot's head is in shadow, but you can see the never changing smile lit up by L.E.D. teeth.

Wash was on the cover of Firefly #1 (November 2018)
The first line on the first page was “Hey, Wash . . . Sorry to trouble you . . . But is that engine on fire?”

Well, you are the one that told me that.
But I had assumed this Sheriff Mal storyline was totally different than the U-War storyline.
