Protests in this context are inevitable. And why not? The people of America’s cities have a right to demand action from their city leaders. It’s a problem for America’s cities to sort out, as citizens demand that their representatives fear their political power as much as they do that of the police organizations.
But the conservative white supremacist extremists are not content to allow that to play out. An empowered urban citizenry is a direct threat to their power, an acceleration of their loss of control. The “Boogaloo” movement wants to instigate a civil war along largely racial lines precisely to settle accounts before they suffer any further cultural or demographic declines.
So a few days ago a radicalized white supremacist teenager drove across state lines with the specific intent of killing protesters against racist police violence, and murdered two people and injured a third. He did so after being welcome by local police, given water, and ignored when he attempted to surrender. He is being celebrated in right-wing circles for doing so, and so-called “Christian” groups are funding his legal defense.
Yesterday, convoys of out-of-town trucks and SUVs bearing Trump flags stormed into Portland with the intent of creating confrontation. They allegedly rolled through groups of protesters in their vehicles, shooting projectiles and pepper spray into the crowds. In the ensuing violence, one of the far-right Trump supporters was shot and killed.
The Portland murderer should, of course, be brought to justice. There is no excuse for deadly violence. But all of this is happening because white supremacists are invading American cities with the express intent of starting a civil war. President Trump sees them as “very fine people” who are on his side. He sees the violence as politically beneficial, a useful cudgel against Democratic nominee Joe Biden–even though the violence is happening while Trump himself is president, not Biden.
Trump’s election theme is that Americans won’t be safe in a Biden presidency. The opposite is true. Americans won’t be safe as long as a white supremacist president is leading a movement of bigots to incite a civil war, and attempting to ensure that the majority of Americans with cosmopolitan, egalitarian values remain politically disenfranchised and under the thumb of those who fear and despise them.

From QAnon to Kyle Rittenhouse, the Right is Sinking Deeper Into an Alternate Reality

On August 19, President Donald Trump gave a nod of approval to believers in the QAnon conspiracy theory, which maintains that the president is secretly fighting to save the world from an elite satanic pedophile network, calling them “people that love our country.”
One week later, on August 26, Fox News host Tucker Carlson sympathized with Kyle Rittenhouse, a teenager who killed two Wisconsin Black Lives Matter protesters and maimed another. Carlson suggested Rittenhouse felt he “had to maintain order when no one else would.”
At a glance, these provocations might appear disconnected. But they are deeply intertwined. In the span of a week, Trump and Carlson both gave the green light to extremist elements on the Right, QAnon conspiracy theorists on the one hand and armed pro-police adventurists on the other. In the process they each drew on the same bedrock narrative: that the streets of America — especially Democrat-run cities, but nowhere is safe — are teeming with lawless agents of anarchy who flout authority, terrorize innocents, and threaten civilization itself. Thus besieged, right-wing extremism of one variant or another is not really extreme at all. It is rational, even heroic and patriotic.

8/29, Portland shooting of Jay Bishop
Earlier in the day, a pro-Trump motorcade of ~600 cars went through the highway on the edge of Portland. A contingent of them decided to drive into the city and confront antifascist protesters. They brought mace, paint ball guns, and other weapons, which shows they preemptively wanted to attack people. They taped off their license plates, a crime, to hide their identities, and yet the police did nothing which gives even more credence to the idea that Portland PD is colluding with them, more info here and here. They attacked a man recording some not taped off plates. They tried to run over protesters, a common terrorist tactic, and shot paintball guns at people, who defended themselves by throwing bottles and other stuff they had on themselves.
During the day, two men were interviewed by a journalist. One is Chandler Pappas, a known patriot prayer activist, and the other is Jay Bishop, also known as Aaron Danielson, the one that ended up dead. The journalist tweeted this picture of them heavily armed before the shooting, quoting Chandler as saying “I’m here to stop people from assaulting these people” which to him meant hunting antifascists. There is also audio footage of Chandler talking about how he's ready to start killing leftists from a different incident.
The initial video that came out of this was fuzzy and gave away very little, making it easy for the right to make it out to be trump supporters being hunted by antifa. A second video has since emerged, posted by Ian Miles Cheong, right wing grifter turned influencer (more on him on the bottom), whose apparently too stupid to actually look at what he posts. Here is the transcript (source), feel free to follow along.
0:05 Chandler Pappas: "Hey, we got 'em right here! We got a couple right here. We got a couple right here. Mace 'em. Pull it out."
Jay: "Right here?"
Pappas maces Michael Reinoehl. A split second later, Reinoehl fires two shots, one of which kills Jay.
0:20 Chandler Pappas (same voice as earlier) starts screaming 'Jay', about his friend that was shot. It's clear that Chandler is the same person in the earlier portion that was hunting protesters and was screaming that his friend was shot.
They literally went to hunt antifascists on the streets with pepper spray, and Jay was killed by a man defending himself.
It's important to point out that Jay, the dead wannabe-badass, supported Jeremy Christian's terrorist attack when a Trump supporter killed two people who stood up against him racially harassing two teenage girls by framing it as "three vigilante thugs who assaulted a man for his opinions." He was also arrested for bringing a gun to a protest in 2017, but the charges were dropped because the search was deemed illegal.

8/28, Kenosha shooting by Kyle Rittenhouse
The protests in Kenosha were much more chaotic and it's harder to trace the day-of events because the protests didn't have a motorcade or something similar that are directly linked to the shooting. Instead, the city was rocked by massive protests which saw protesters throughout the city and militias coming in to intimidate them.
The most telling video so far of what Rittenhouse's actions that day were before the shooting is here. This video was taken shortly before the shooting, and Kyle wasn't yet a nationally know figure, so this is simply the interaction between two strangers. The protester recognizes Kyle and accuses him of aiming his gun at them and telling them to get out of their car earlier in the day, which adds credibility that Kyle wasn't some kid out there defending himself but is instead a kid that wanted to larp as a cop.
The first shooting was after an altercation between Rittenhouse and Joseph Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum briefly chased Kyle after a small confrontation between protesters and militia members, and Rosenbaum threw a plastic bag at Kyle, who then shot Rosenbaum. Protesters then tried to chase him because he was at that point a person that just shot and killed somebody and was fleeing the scene, and Kyle shot two others that were trying to take him down.
Much discussion has been had around him having the gun. His lawyer claims the gun belonged to his friend. However as a minor, he did not have the legal right to carry the firearm as he did. Any claims of self defense are very dubious because he broke the law in order to place himself in that position. When somebody goes out of their way to be part of a dangerous situation, such as illegally carrying around a loaded fire arm in a highly charged situation, the claim becomes very weak because they are contributing flame to the fire. This approach is epitomized in the felony liability rule which states that if somebody creates a situation that is likely to result in death (typically but not always by committing a felony) they are liable for any resulting death. Self defense and the felony murder rule doctrine aren't simple and vary between jurisdictions, and I don't claim to fully comprehend the nuances of Kenosha's laws, but it is a fact that Rittenhouse shouldn't have had the gun by his age alone, and his actions created a dangerous environment that directly resulted in 2 deaths.
The following day, a different video was revealed of Rittenhouse intervening in a fight between two girls to sucker punch one of them in the head from behind, starting at the 1:00 mark in the video. This, connected with the video of the protesters accusing him of pointing a gun at them, show Rittenhouse as a violent individual who wanted to become a cop, and for him this meant being violent and believing that he can do whatever he wants to whoever he wants with no repercussions.
So the important takeaways are
A) The right believes you have the right to lethally defend yourself from a plastic bag but not from pepper spray. Just kidding, their beliefs have no consistency.
B) Ian Miles Cheong, who posted the second video of the Portland shooting without even listening to what it actually shows, is either too fucking stupid to analyze what he posts before he posts it, or he thinks his followers are too stupid to figure out when he's lying. Considering he's a grifter that lives in Malaysia and makes a living off fueling the culture war in America (a common tactic of worldwide grifters who see manipulating American conservatives as an easy way to make money, see here or here), it's probably both. You can see a detailed catalog of how he built up his influence on reddit in order to grift off that influence here or here. He is a perfect example of the right wing influencers that spread lies in order to grift off their followers. When his reddit scam ended, he just jumped over to spreading lies on twitter. Trump has been very critical of the 1994 crime bill and the 2009 economic recovery act, both of which increased federal support for local police. He’s also submitted four budget proposals to Congress, each of which proposed cuts in police spending. More to the point, right now politicians are debating what to do about the CARES Act.
Democrats and Republicans are arguing about Democrats’ desire to provide state and local government with a massive injection of emergency aid money to plug giant budget holes in police departments. With no aid forthcoming due to GOP opposition, cities are cutting those budgets.
And while the abstract defunding debate plays out among Republican intellectuals, real cities are cutting. Not just liberal enclaves, either. Oklahoma City, one of the most conservative cities in America, is cutting its police budget because it’s cutting spending across the board.
If you believe in the empirical evidence that more cops equals less crime — which Trump seems to pretend to — then this trend would appear to make America less safe. And that’s only more so the case, given that the cutbacks in policing will be paired with cuts to mental health and other social services and occur at a time of high unemployment.

Jeremiah just wanted to find his car and go home, but he was trapped.
A line of police in riot gear had just forced him and hundreds of other protesters out of Kenosha's Civic Center Park and into the street. After that, there was nowhere to go. Soldiers and cops blocked one end of the road. White guys with big guns blocked the other.
It was past 11 p.m. local time Tuesday, the third night of protests after a Kenosha police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back. Jeremiah had received a text from a friend saying a bunch of protesters had their tires slashed. He wanted to get to his car before vandals did. He decided the quickest path was to cut through a parking lot.
As he made his way toward it, Jeremiah saw more armed white men. Two crouched on the roof of a building, sniper style. Two or three others stood guard over the lot. One of them, a babyface with a backward ball cap, raised an assault rifle and pointed it at him.
Jeremiah, 24 and Black, was more annoyed than afraid. He'd been out protesting all summer, more than 90 days so far. He knew about these guys and their scare tactics, and he refused to be intimidated.
When the kid started yelling, Jeremiah shouted back: "I'm trying to get out of here. If you're gonna shoot me, just shoot!"
A few minutes later, Jeremiah saw the same guy pointing his weapon at someone else.
This time, Kyle Rittenhouse fired.
Rittenhouse, 17, has been charged with five felonies and a misdemeanor after shooting three people Tuesday night, two of them fatally. His lead attorney, John M. Pierce of the law firm Pierce Bainbridge, has said he plans to argue self-defense.
