Michael Cohen Makes History by Peggy Noonan.
There’s no precedent for such an attack on the essential nature of an American president.
Mr. Cohen implied the president’s Russian policies are not and never have been on the up-and-up: “Mr. Trump knew of and directed the Trump-Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign, and lied about it. He lied because he never expected to win the election. He also lied about it because he stood to make hundreds of millions of dollars on the Moscow real-estate project.” Mr. Cohen said he came to see the president’s true character: “Since taking office he has become the worst version of himself. . . . Donald Trump is a man who ran for office to make his brand great, not to make our country great. He had no desire or intention to lead this nation — only to market himself and to build his wealth and power. Mr. Trump would often say, the campaign is going to be the ‘greatest infomercial in political history.’ He never expected to win the primary. He never expected to win the general election. The campaign — for him — was always a marketing opportunity."
None of these charges were new, precisely. They have been made in books, investigations and interviews both on and off the record. What is amazing though is that such a rebuke—such an attack on the essential nature of a president, and by an intimate—has no equal in our history. I don’t think, as we talk about Mr. Cohen’s testimony, we fully appreciate this. John Dean said there was a cancer growing in the presidency. He didn’t say Richard Nixon was the cancer. He didn’t say the president was wicked and a fraud.
This is bigger than we think, and history won’t miss the import of this testimony.
www.wsj.com/articles/michael-cohen-makes-history-11551397848
I don't think Noonan's claim that "such a rebuke ... has no equal in our history" is accurate, unless she's relying on the fact that no such claim has been made "by an intimate" of the president. And her parsing of Dean's comment about "a cancer growing in the presidency" is a little too cute. But set that aside for the moment. What is interesting is her identification of the nature of Cohen's attack: that it is an attack "on the essential nature of a president." Cohen maintains that a racist, a liar, a cheat, a fraud, and a conman is president. In short, Cohen believes that a criminal is in the White House.
If that's true, and if it represents a unique and fateful development in the history of the United States, shouldn't we be taking immediate action? Forget impeachment. How about massive civil disobedience? How about a crowd of a million or more Americans in the streets of Washington, D.C., a crowd that refuses to leave until Trump resigns? A criminal in the White House? Doesn't that require action right now?
Yet, in our culture, this story is merely another "hot" story of the moment. Interest in the Cohen appearance is already beginning to fade. We'll soon be consumed by some other "hot" story that will demand endless commentary and numerous columns, probably by the end of the coming week if recent behavior is any guide. So, once again, we witness a disconnect of mammoth proportions, an abyss between the words that are employed and the behavior that is considered appropriate by way of response. This is simply another political food fight. A criminal in the White House? Good copy, a good topic for talk-show guests to opine on. It's just words, after all.

Biden's handlers are keeping him hidden because they're worried if he comes out and says ANYTHING he'll look like the senile old man that he is. So there will be no debates and no live Q&A and no live speeches, just the pre=recorded five-second snippets of which he is capable. And a real investigation of Burisma would yield interesting results, I'm sure.

After watching Trump, my armchair dx is still adult ADHD with a fair bit of ODD. Like all wealthy people and MOST politicians, he has some crooked dealings in his background, but less than most. I'm sure dyed-in-the-wool Dems thought hounding the Clintons over WHITEWATER REAL ESTATE DEAL was irrelevant at best and a politically-motivated investigation at worst ... at least Trump's records didn't go "missing" for the duration of the investigation only to mysteriously reappear after the investigation was closed, and his aide didn't commit suicide like Vince Foster did.
Hillary Clinton's favorite dodge: missing records.
And then there are her 33,000 bleach-bitted emails about Chelsea's wedding and yoga pants. Not that there was any pay-to-play shakedown going on at the State Dept tied to the Clinton Foundation, or anythng.

UPDATED: The Clinton Kill List: Full list of people “mysteriously dead” after working with Clintons
Let me ask you a question. How many people in your circle of friends or coworkers have turned up mysteriously dead in the course of your LIFETIME? None? Maybe one in rare circumstances and you probably tell the story all the time because of how strange it was that it happened to someone you know!
In other words, have you ever seen Dateline? Have you ever seen one of those Datelines where the husband has had 2 or 3 wives all die under bizarre circumstances? Each time they claim it was an accident. “A million to one shot!” Terrible tragedy! Except the investigators start to get REAL suspicious by the time the 2nd and especially 3rd wife dies “accidentally“.
Ok, now image it happened 47 times!
You think that husband isn’t going straight to prison for dozens of consecutive life sentences? You’d better believe it.
And that, my friends, is Bill and Hillary Clinton. How many associates of theirs have turned up dead under very bizarre circumstances? According to ClashDaily.com, the list is up to at least 47! What!?! And that list of 47 people does not include Seth Rich. No, these are just the close Clinton associates. Close, that is, until they wind up dead.
Add to that, many of these “mysteriously dead” were getting ready to testify against the Clintons for a number of criminal acts. What a coincidence that they all had such weird “accidents”!
Here’s the top 10 from our friends at ClashDaily.com:
1 – James McDougal – Clinton’s convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr’s investigation.
2 – Mary Mahoney – A former White House intern was murdered July 1997 at a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Georgetown. The murder happened just after she was to go public withNOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

The president blurted out his determination to undermine voting rights in a Fox Business Network interview.
https://web.archive.org/web/20200813221402/https://www.thenation.com/a
rticle/politics/dejoy-usps-postmaster-general/
Donald Trump is fessing up even as he commits the crime.
Desperate to secure a second term, the president now openly admits that he is messing with the Postal Service because mail handlers and letter carriers make it possible to hold elections that rely on absentee ballots and universal mail-in voting. Voting by mail produces high-turnout elections in normal circumstances, and it provides a vital assurance for democracy in extraordinary circumstances—such as a pandemic moment when voters are encouraged to shelter in place rather than stand in long lines to cast ballots in crowded polling places. Trump, an unpopular president even before he mangled the response to Covid-19, recognizes the threat high turnout poses to his reelection bid.
On Thursday, he removed all doubt about his determination to undermine voting rights when he blurted out in an interview that one of the reasons he is stalling coronavirus relief negotiations is because Democrats are trying to save the Postal Service. “They want 25 billion dollars—billion—for the Post Office,” the president announced on the Fox Business Network. “Now they need that money in order to have the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots.”
The USPS actually needs $75 billion to address current challenges posed by the pandemic and longer-term challenges created by a congressional mandate that the Postal Service fund pension costs decades into the future. But Trump is blocking even a down payment on that funding because, as Trump says, without those funds “that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting.”
Even by Trump standards, that’s an astounding admission of why he’s so determined to deny the Postal Service a lifeline.

"We are going to win four more years," Trump said at a rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Monday. "And then after that, we'll go for another four years because they spied on my campaign. We should get a redo of four years."
What Trump is proposing is banned by the Constitution, which limits presidents to serving two terms. There is no "redo" provision in the Constitution for extraneous circumstances surrounding a president's first term. And even if there was, Trump's allegation that he deserves a third term because "they spied on my campaign" wouldn't pass any sort of smell test.

Quote:Yeah, too bad the deep state broke the Constitution several dozen times because they led an attempted coup to remove a duly-elected President.

I know you don't believe any of that.

I'd say he was doing pretty well until COVID-19 became serious. He had his messages to his base pretty well crafted; and most people in the middle who are the people not paying attention to his messages (and where most people are these days) had a good personal comfort level in terms of jobs and personal finances. That would have given him I think a good lead in the popular vote, despite the never-Trumpers and the Deep State who wanted to erase his election as a horrible event as quickly as possible.

We need to thank President Trump for bringing this fact to light:
Many Americans hoped that most Republican officials, while they agreed with Trump’s policies, did not like the uglier parts of his style, his willingness to lie or smear to achieve his ends. But President Trump made House Republicans go on the record. He made them stand and be counted, and 126 of them, including Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and Republican Whip Steve Scalise, actually signed their names to an undemocratic, unAmerican, mendacious joke of a lawsuit that would disenfranchise millions of their fellow Americans.
These House Republicans raised their hands. They said: 'Sign me up.' The hope that most Republicans in the House were better than this has been destroyed. We need to thank President Trump for bringing this fact to light.

And the timing is precious - within his last few days in office he's gotten them to sign their names, forever identifying themselves - like signing a confession. It reminds me of the pipe bomb from Left for Dead - an old xbox video game. Throw the bomb out and it's beeping attracts any zombie within ear shot until...
