The Covid-19 crisis is the biggest economic disaster, at least in terms of measured unemployment, since the Great Depression, so it’s perhaps appropriate that the main measure enacted to fight it was historically enormous too. But its scale has been, if anything, underappreciated.
In a 2015 paper, economists Price Fishback and Valentina Kachanovskaya tallied the fiscal stimulus undertaken between 1930 and 1940 (the vast majority of which was initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt after taking office in 1933) at $41.7 billion, or about $653 billion in 2009 dollars — less than the $840 billion cost of the 2009 stimulus bill, as the St. Louis Fed’s Bill Dupor notes. Dupor also finds that, between 1931 and 1939, the federal debt grew by 30.3 percent of the economy; between 2008 and 2011, it grew by 32 percent of the economy. Again, the Great Recession response was larger.

Sullivan of Notre Dame, collaborating with UChicago scholar Jeehoon Ha — found that in April and May, the estimated poverty rate covering the previous 12 months was 8.6 percent compared to 10.9 percent in January and February, suggesting that poverty actually fell after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, almost certainly due to the overwhelming federal response.

A crisis can motivate action, not so much because it’s the ‘right thing to do’ but because neither party wants to be blamed for failing to act. When the consequences of stalemate are too steep for both parties (an economy in a coma, millions already filing for unemployment, tens of thousands dying), we shouldn’t be surprised to see them go to the bargaining table and reach a deal.
The bill had a little something for each party: Republicans got large-scale support for major businesses, Democrats got a big Unemployment Benefits expansion, Trump got checks he could put his signature on to help his reelection.

I'm good dude.
I fixed my roof last week. I bought what I need to jack up my overhang that's been causing issues for me since last summer and I'll get that wrapped up just as quick as I can slowly jack it back up level. After going down to fix my brothers electric scooter late this week I will be replacing any bad fascia and covering it all with new fascia in prep for the gutter guy to come out and finally get them up. Then I'm going to fix the two bad mortar joints in my foundation so there are no more leaks from the walls.
Meanwhile, I fixed my car and it's running better than it did before Obama was elected, and aside from a minor bathroom remodel my 2nd floor is completely done and showroom ready.
Once I wrap up the outside work and the weather cools down I can start working on remodeling the 1st floor.
All I needed to do was get rid of the hoard and take inventory of everything I own and what I needed. That's done now.
The only thing you've ever said that was right is that only I can fix my problems.
I'm getting better everyday.
This time last year I was panicking, living in a hoard with mice shit everywhere and a raccoon family in the attic and a porch that had a 4' by 15' gaping hole below the entryway, and thinking I'd have to sell my house for $30k cash if I was lucky. After I shore up that overhang, put up the gutters and patch the foundation, I wouldn't even think of selling it if I didn't walk away with $100k after all closing costs. Another few years here I can probably get close to the $166k that a neighbor sold the house for across the street last year.
That's rich money for me once I sell and go down by my brother and downsize to a home half the size with 1/4 of the lawn to mow. I'm just a few years away from easy street and a stress free 20 year wait until those Social Security checks start rolling in.

S2: I do think you can read them as companions. I have no doubt that they weren’t intended to be so. But they’re both making a strikingly similar argument or really set of arguments about Donald Trump. Mary Trump’s coming from the perspective of someone who knew him when she was growing up and knew him before, long before he became president and Bolten, obviously the perspective of someone who worked with him very closely in the White House as his national security adviser. And really, the bottom line between these two books is that Donald Trump is only in it for himself. He is without empathy. He is incapable of understanding a greater good. Everything he does is motivated by his own self-interest. And the argument that Mary Trump is making is he has always been this way.

As Mayor of Minneapolis, I Saw How White Liberals Block Change
As the mayor of Minneapolis from 2014 to 2018, as a Minneapolis City Council member from 2006 until 2014 and as a white Democrat, I can say this: White liberals, despite believing we are saying and doing the right things, have resisted the systemic changes our cities have needed for decades. We have mostly settled for illusions of change, like testing pilot programs and funding volunteer opportunities.
These efforts make us feel better about racism, but fundamentally change little for the communities of color whose disadvantages often come from the hoarding of advantage by mostly white neighborhoods.
In Minneapolis, the white liberals I represented as a Council member and mayor were very supportive of summer jobs programs that benefited young people of color. I also saw them fight every proposal to fundamentally change how we provide education to those same young people. They applauded restoring funding for the rental assistance hotline. They also signed petitions and brought lawsuits against sweeping reform to zoning laws that would promote housing affordability and integration.
Nowhere is this dynamic of preserving white comfort at the expense of others more visible than in policing. Whether we know it or not, white liberal people in blue cities implicitly ask police officers to politely stand guard in predominantly white parts of town (where the downside of bad policing is usually inconvenience) and to aggressively patrol the parts of town where people of color live — where the consequences of bad policing are fear, violent abuse, mass incarceration and, far too often, death.
Underlying these requests are the flawed beliefs that aggressive patrolling of Black communities provides a wall of protection around white people and our property.
Police officers understand the dynamic well. We give them lethal tools and a lot of leeway to keep our parts of town safe (a mandate implicitly understood to be “safe from people of color.”) That leeway attracts people who want to misuse it.
Minneapolis historically has some of the worst racial disparities in the country. When I was mayor, despite changes like instituting body cameras and investing more in training, policing outcomes for people of color never improved as much as I hoped. The disparities in arrest rates and use of force, for instance, remained glaringly high.
On Nov. 15, 2015, during my term as mayor, two Minneapolis police officers shot and killed Jamar Clark, an unarmed Black man. An 18-day encampment set up by protesters surrounding the grounds of the Fourth Police Precinct house followed.
But instead of greatly increasing police presence and needlessly arresting people for blocking the street or for having tents on public property, I decided to let the protests and encampment continue while we negotiated with protesters toward a more peaceful conclusion.
Minneapolis police officers, who were worried about the precinct house’s being taken over and burned down (as the Third Precinct station was during last month’s uprising), guarded the building and found themselves frustrated by what they saw as conflicting orders.
“They’ve got fires in the street!”
“They’re out there smoking weed. We can smell it in here.”
“They spray-painted the precinct!”
Acts that they would have arrested people for under normal circumstances. I heard complaints like this at every shift change I attended, shepherded inside by a security vehicle. Before long, I knew that if I didn’t explain to the officers what exactly I was asking of them, we had little hope of safely and effectively saving the city from widespread unrest.
“Look,” I told them. “You know what will happen if I let you go out there and just arrest people. There will be riots.” I told them I wanted them to get home safely at the end of their shifts and to give us time to find a peaceful resolution.

The fragility of America’s political institutions
Masha Gessen: I have spent most of my professional life writing about Russia, where I have constructed all sorts of theories or used other people’s theories about how autocratic rule is conditioned over decades — how it is entrenched in a culture.
And here we are in America, where supposedly this is entirely alien, watching a political party that held a majority in both houses of Congress just falling in line like they are the subjects of a tyrant who rules by terror. That upends all of those theories.
What I write about in the book is that I think there is a difference of political audiences in autocracy and a democracy. In a democracy, a politician’s audience is their voters. They are accountable to their voters. Their voters decide whether they stay in office or lose their jobs. They address their voters whenever they’re speaking publicly, even if it’s ostensibly to someone else.
In an autocracy, a politician’s audience is always the autocrat because it is the autocrat who distributes power and often money. It is the autocrat who decides whether the politician keeps their job or not. And I think somehow, in a matter literally of months, an entire half of our political life changed to the audience of an autocracy. Because it’s Donald Trump who can commit murder by tweet and causes any elected representative probably to lose his or her job.
Ezra Klein: To me, the scariest line in your book is this one: “The first three years of Trump’s presidency have shown that an autocratic attempt in the United States has a credible chance of succeeding.”
The thing that has always been so striking to me about Trump is that he would make his own rejection so easy. He’s crude. He’s not strategic. He alienates potential allies. He’s never had an approval rating above 50 percent. He betrays some of the party’s core principles. He’s not somebody who’s been executing a strategic takeover of either the Republican Party or of American political institutions. So this is the easy case. And even in this case, we’ve proved unable to put strong boundaries on him. He’s taken over a major political party.
To me, the true nightmare scenario here has been not really Trump — I’m not even sure he truly wants a level of responsibility that would come along with being a successful autocrat, even if he were capable of becoming one. Our deep vulnerability is somebody who did want it and who was willing to be just mildly strategic.

It is quite extraordinary that a pandemic originating in a Chinese province, a disease whose initial cover-up briefly seemed likely to deal a grave blow to the Communist regime, has instead given China a geopolitical opportunity unlike any enjoyed by an American rival since at least the Vietnam War.
This opportunity has been a long time building. Across the 2000s and early 2010s, China’s ruling party reaped the benefits of globalization without paying the cost, in political liberalization, that confident Westerners expected the economic opening to impose. This richer-but-not-freer China proved that it was possible for an authoritarian power to make its citizens hardworking capitalists without granting them substantial political freedoms, to buy allies across the developing world, and to establish beachheads of influence — in Hollywood, Silicon Valley, American academia, the NBA, Washington, D.C. — in the power centers of its superpower rival.
Eventually, America responded to all this as you would expect a superpower to react: It elected a China hawk who promised to get tough on Beijing, to bring back jobs lost to China, and to shift foreign policy priorities from the Middle East to the Pacific. But there was one small difficulty: This hawk was no Truman or Reagan, but rather a reality-television mountebank whose real attitude toward China policy was, basically, whatever gets me re-elected works. A mountebank, and also a world-historical incompetent, who was presented with exactly the challenge that his nationalism was supposed to answer — a dangerous disease carried by global trade routes from our leading rival — and managed to turn it into an American calamity instead.
So China has won twice over: First rising with the active collaboration of naïve American centrists, and then consolidating its gains with the de facto collaboration of a feckless American populist. Four months into the coronavirus era, Xi Jinping’s government is throttling Hong Kong, taking tiny bites out of India, saber-rattling with its other neighbors, and perpetrating a near-genocide in its Muslim West. Meanwhile America is rudderless and leaderless, consumed by protests and elite psychodrama and a moral crusade whose zeal seems turned entirely inward, with no time to spare for a rival power’s crimes.

Just an update into current events. These are the type posts that catch my attention.
It’s enough to update what’s being reported on regarding a topic. Enough to give you insights into how others here are spinning or deflecting away from the truth in their posts. No more than that is needed. No more than that will be read.

Whatever happened to Anthony Fauci? We don’t see much of him anymore. It turns out that President Trump got tired of Fauci’s pessimism about COVID-19 and has mostly sidelined him. In fact, it’s worse than that. When a Washington Post reporter asked about Fauci, the White House dumped their "opposition file" on him:
A White House official released a statement saying that “several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things” and included a lengthy list of the scientist’s comments from early in the outbreak. Those included his early doubt that people with no symptoms could play a significant role in spreading the virus — a notion based on earlier outbreaks that the novel coronavirus would turn on its head. They also point to public reassurances Fauci made in late February, around the time of the first U.S. case of community transmission, that “at this moment, there is no need to change anything that you’re doing on a day-by-day basis.”

Texas voter registration surges to 16.4 million, despite the pandemic
The state now has a record 16.4 million voters, 2.1 million more than it had just over four years ago — a 15 percent increase in registrations that is nearly equivalent to the voter rolls of the entire state of Connecticut.
“It is a totally different electorate than it was in 2016,” said Luke Warford, voter expansion director for the Texas Democratic Party.
Texas just isn’t accustomed to this sort of surge.
Texas voter registration rolls historically have grown slowly. From 2002 to 2012, the rolls grew by 800,000. But now, registration is in hyperdrive.
In short, Brandon Rottinghaus, a University of Houston political science professor, said 2020 is setting up as a real shootout in regions of the state that have become more competitive because of the diversification and growth of the electorate.
“It’s another step toward Texas being a true battleground,” Rottinghaus said.
In Texas, voters don’t register by party affiliation like many other states, making it unclear exactly how many Republican or Democratic voters are in the state.
Gov. Greg Abbott holds regular organizing sessions with Republicans he calls Abbott University, where they’re warned that Democratic registration efforts even before 2018 were changing the state’s electorate.
The results in 2018 showed just how real that was. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke came within 219,000 votes of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican, who six years earlier had won his seat with a 1.2 million vote margin. But it went beyond that. Democrats flipped two Congressional seats in Washington D.C. that had been held by Republicans, two Texas Senate seats and 12 Texas House seats.

Mary Trump’s Book Shows How Donald Trump Gets Away With It
The gossip is a sideshow. The real virtue of this book is its psychoanalysis of the enablers. As she writes in her prologue, “there’s been very little effort to understand not only why he became what he is but how he’s consistently failed up despite his glaring lack of fitness.” What Mary Trump describes here is not just her uncle’s addiction to adulation, fame, money, and success, but a nation’s — or some part of a nation’s — unfathomable addiction to him.
Mary is perfectly positioned to explain and translate what happens to otherwise high-functioning adults — her aunt Maryanne, a competent federal judge; the lawyers and accountants tasked with fulfilling Donald’s whims and hiding his failings; the sycophants and Republicans and evangelical Christians who support his campaign unquestioningly; and the officials who now populate the Senate, the Cabinet, and the Oval Office. All of them appear to be reasonably mentally sound. Yet they all cover for Donald.
New York’s bankers and powerful elites, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, and Jared Kushner all knew and know that the emperor has no clothes, even as they devote their last shreds of dignity to effusive praise of his ermine trim and jaunty crown.
Mary Trump seems to answer the question of why they do this in a section late in the book about Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump. In describing Fred’s growing realizing that his fair-haired boy, Donald, was a fraud, Mary explains that, yes, Fred himself was a master at fattening his wallet with taxpayer funds, committing tax fraud to benefit his children. (Mary admits she was the one who leaked the family tax information to the New York Times in 2018 for its blockbuster story.) But as it became clear that Donald had no real business acumen—as his Atlantic City casinos cratered and his father unlawfully poured secret funds into saving them—Mary realized that Fred also depended on the glittery tabloid success at which Donald excelled. Fred continued to prop up his son’s smoke-and-mirrors empire because, as Mary writes, “Fred had become so invested in the fantasy of Donald’s success that he and Donald were inextricably linked. Facing reality would have required acknowledging his own responsibility, which he would never do. He had gone all in, and although any rational person would have folded, Fred was determined to double down.”
Mary Trump’s words there could just as easily be true for John Kelly, Kellyanne Conway, John Bolton, Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, or Melania Trump. And as Mary Trump is quick to observe, the sheer stuck-ness of his enablers means that Trump never, ever learns his lesson. Being cosseted, lied to, defended, and puffed up means that Donald Trump knows that, “no matter what happens, no matter how much damage he leaves in his wake, he will be OK.” He fails up, in other words, because everyone around him, psychologically normal beings all, ends up so enmeshed with his delusions that they must do anything necessary to protect them. Trump’s superpower isn’t great vision or great leadership but rather that he is so tiny. Taking him on for transactional purposes may seem like not that big a deal at first, but the moment you put him in your pocket, you become his slave. It is impossible to escape his orbit without having to admit a spectacular failure in moral and strategic judgment, which almost no one can stomach. Donald Trump’s emptiness is simply a mirror of the emptiness of everyone who propped him up. It’s that reflection that becomes unendurable. This pattern, as Mary writes, “guaranteed a cascade of increasingly consequential failures that would ultimately render all of us collateral damage.” Nobody, not even Mary, who signed on briefly to ghostwrite one of his books, ends up just a little bit beholden to Donald Trump and that includes his rapturous supporters who still queue up, maskless, to look upon his greatness. As she concludes, his sociopathy “reminds me that Donald isn’t really the problem at all.”

Across the West, the main trigger of populism has been the growing inequality — and hostility — between urban and rural regions.
Resentment is difficult to measure, for it always expresses itself indirectly. It is easier to target the objects of resentment for perceived or imagined moral failings than because they are wealthier or more fortunate in life. Resentment is a conflict in search of a cause—a cause that populists readily provide.
Why Now?
Thinking in terms of the new regional class divide solves one of the perennial mysteries of the populist wave in Europe and the U.S.: Why is the disruption happening now, rather than a decade ago, at the height of the global financial crisis? The answer emerges very quickly when looking at how different regions have recovered—or not recovered—in the decade since.
While the crisis proved only a temporary setback for cosmopolitan cities such as London, Amsterdam, and New York—whose financial sectors were bailed out by government largesse—blighted ex-industrial regions continue to struggle under the burden of austerity. In the decade from 2008 to 2016, while GDP per capita rose over 13 percent for California and New York, it rose on average less than 3 percent across other U.S. states. It is a pattern found across Europe, from the Netherlands to Sweden to Denmark, Italy, Ireland, and Greece. Wealthy, cosmopolitan cities surge ahead, and the periphery gets left further and further behind.
Over the past 10 years, it has been this combination of rising urban wealth with government neglect for peripheral regions that has fueled populist resentment by combining material hardship with a sense of injustice. While prosperous cities were bailed out, poorer regions have been subject to death by a thousand cuts as government belt-tightening has slashed local budgets and starved regions of capital investment.
In the United States, 2009, then-Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner made the rescue of the banking system the centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s economic legacy, while both Treasury and Congress conspired to starve states of the funds required for necessary public investment. From 2008 to 2016, government investment as a percentage of GDP in the United States sunk to its lowest level since records began in 1947, as infrastructure budgets that had once connected the country with highways, airports, and bridges were slashed. It should be no surprise that when Trump promised to stop spending money overseas and to start rebuilding U.S. infrastructure, he found support in Democratic heartlands, in places with potholed roads and crumbling bridges, where Republicans had never found support before.
Viewing contemporary politics as a clash between the cosmopolitan center and the regional periphery solves another of the mysteries of the populist wave: Why did populists sweep to power across Central and Eastern Europe, despite two decades of robust economic growth?
The answer is that there’s been growth for some—but not for others. In the Czech Republic, for example, GDP per capita in Prague grew by over $20,000 from 2001 to 2016—almost as much as the total GDP per capita for the country overall. In 2013, Milos Zeman swept into the Czech presidency on a populist platform that won him widespread support in every region except for Prague. He repeated the same feat again last year.
Breaking the Cycle
As long as regional inequality persists, the populist pressure is very unlikely to abate. As soon as one threat recedes—the possibility of a Le Pen presidency, for example—another one comes to replace it, such as the yellow vest protests. While Trump has—at best—only a 50 percent chance of winning the next U.S. presidential election, the sheer resilience of his support across the U.S. heartland—with a solid 40 percent of American voters consistently approving his performance in office—suggests that

The Next Disaster Is Just a Few Days Away
Millions of unemployed Americans face imminent catastrophe.
Two months have gone by since the House passed a relief measure, The Heroes Act, that would, among other things, extend enhanced unemployment benefits through the rest of the year. www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/6800 But neither Senate Republicans nor the White House has shown any sense of urgency about the looming crisis. Why?
Part of the answer is that Trump and his officials are still talking about a rapid, V-shape recovery that will bring us quickly back to full employment, making special aid to the unemployed unnecessary; they’re apparently oblivious to what everyone else sees — an economy that is stumbling again as the coronavirus surges back.
Delusions about the state of the economic recovery, in turn, allow conservatives to indulge in one of their favorite ideas — that helping the unemployed in a depressed economy hurts job creation, by discouraging people from taking jobs, but those jobs temporarily don’t exist because the pandemic is keeping customers at home, not out shopping and dining and taking airplane trips.
Worrying about employment incentives in the midst of a pandemic seems to be at the core of White House “thinking” about economic policy right now.
Republicans don’t seem to realize that they, not the Democrats, will be blamed if millions are plunged into penury because unemployment relief is delayed; to the extent that they’re willing to act at all, they still imagine that they can extract concessions like a blanket exemption of businesses from pandemic liability.
Maybe the prospect of catastrophe will concentrate Republican minds, but it seems more likely that we’re heading for weeks if not months of extreme financial distress for millions of unemployed Americans, distress that will hobble the economy as a whole. This disaster didn’t need to happen; but you can say the same thing about most of what has gone wrong lately.

Funny that congress always seems to be on spring break at times like these...
They're writing something up. They don't go back to work until the 20th, and that means they've got a little over a week to get something passed before payments for the week ending the 25th go out.
The systems are largely in place so it shouldn't be 2 to 3 months to get everything up and running for everyone. That being said, there are always bugs, and there are always hiccups.
My predictions:
1. There will be a "back to work" incentive added this time that will give several hundred dollars per week above your paycheck at your new job that would last at least a month, but likely as long as any FPUC extension.
2. They're going to cap the FPUC for unemployed people to 100% of their pay when they got laid off.
3. Although Number 2 sounds like that would be hard to do, it really isn't. Your monetary determination varies, state by state, but it ends up being a percentage of your average weekly pay for your base period. I believe in Illinois and Indiana for instance, your weekly unemployment payouts are 47% of what your average weekly pay was.
All that would need to be done in those states is an additional 53% FPUC payout per week to make that whole.
That being said, these are only 2 examples out of 50. There is probably a pretty wide variety in how different states handled this. But I can't imagine a scenario where the data isn't already there and easily plugged into a process that would make this 100%.
4. There will be bugs, and as a result, some states will be paying out the additional federal funds immediately while others will see their unemployed only getting their regular state level UI for a month or more until the system is implemented, at which time they will get a retroactive payment for the weeks of federal funds missed.
4. Additional FPUC benefits will be extended to December.
I seriously doubt that the extra full $600 is going to continue, but 100% of previous pay is pretty likely.
Eventually, somebody is going to have to revisit this once again late in the year if the Mask Karens get their way and we're just shutting down everything forever.
52 weeks of unemployment isn't going to be enough if we're still talking about this next spring.
I have a feeling that one way or another come November 4th it's going to disappear from the news cycle though.

Trump’s Efforts to Distort the Census Have Started Back Up
At the end of last month, the White House and the Commerce Department placed two new political appointees at the Census Bureau, renewing fears that the Trump administration was again seeking to interfere with the census, a sprawling operation whose results will shape the distribution of political power and federal funds for the next decade. One of the roles went to Adam Korzeniewski, a Marine Corps veteran who consulted for the unsuccessful congressional campaign of Joseph Saladino, a controversial YouTube prankster who once wore a swastika to a Trump rally and claimed in one of his videos that “the Black community is very violent towards Trump and his supporters.” The other position went to Nathaniel T. Cogley, a radio commentator and assistant professor at Tarleton State University in Texas, who will be the deputy director for policy—the highest post a political appointee has held at the bureau for decades (besides the director, who is also a political appointee).
Neither Cogley’s nor Korzeniewski’s job descriptions have been made public—the roles did not even exist prior to the announcement—and neither man has sustained experience with census operations. Adding political appointees in the middle of the count is virtually unprecedented, not to mention doing so right at the start of what is sure to be one of the most difficult in-person counting operations in the bureau’s history. The American Statistical Association decried the news as creating “the perception—if not reality—of improper political influence.” The inspector general has asked the bureau to provide additional information about the positions, and Democratic lawmakers recently accused the Trump administration of failing to explain why political appointees are “running what should be an ideologically neutral count of the people in our country.”

Throw the Bums Out
America is in the midst of a world-historic failure of governance. Why isn’t anyone in charge acting like they are responsible for it?
Earlier this month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled the Covid-19 mountain, a three-dimensional foam mound representing the pandemic’s toll on his state. He had used the “mountain” metaphor before and had apparently decided to make it tangible. Referring to the chart of daily new infections statewide, he said that New Yorkers had climbed the “mountain.” Now, with that number declining to seemingly manageable levels, he turned the chart into a monument to the state’s collective achievement.
In a functional democracy with any standard of democratic accountability — a country where elected officials expect to be held responsible for outcomes they could have controlled or influenced — a governor would only have unveiled such a bloody monument if he needed an explanation for his immediate resignation. Cuomo, instead, had the mountain recast as a commemorative poster, which he revealed at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
The “mountain” is a triumphalist materialization of an overwhelming pile of bodies. It is a manifestation of a horrific and avoidable failure. New Yorkers did not set out to climb the mountain; they were led to its peak by their government.
That very much includes our federal government, which clearly signaled by early March that it was neither willing nor able to do what was necessary to contain the pandemic nationwide. Months into the crisis, we still face inexplicable and inexcusable testing delays, evidence that the federal government never addressed its earliest and most catastrophic failure. Here in New York, where Cuomo would have us believe that we have made it to the other side of the mountain, where tests are ostensibly available to anyone who wants one, I would face, according to one of the city’s main swab test sources, a seven-day wait for results, severely limiting the test’s effectiveness as a way of tracking the spread of the virus.
The United States has the highest Covid-19 death toll in the world, and it is rapidly adding a staggering number of new cases every day. These are conditions that would lead to widespread resignations of public health officials in a functionally democratic country. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown resigned less than a month after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. So far, most of the people who’ve been forced out of public health jobs since the pandemic began have been those advocating for more forceful and effective government action.
While our federal government’s catastrophic and ongoing failure to prepare for or mitigate the pandemic rightfully earns most of the blame for the explosion of cases, an exclusive focus on the federal response obscures the total extent of our national failure. Our federalist system may deny governors all the resources the federal government can marshal, but it still gives them plenty of power. Most American states have resources small nations can only dream of, and most governors have as much power as the heads of any number of foreign governments. If it was clear by March that the federal government would simply not be containing Covid-19 (and I certainly think it was clear), it was the responsibility of governors like Cuomo to try to contain it themselves.
Western media sometimes claims the successful containment of the virus in Asian countries like South Korea is due to their populace’s high trust in government, their conformity, and their willingness to submit to authority. In reality, it has only been three years since South Koreans took to the streets by the hundreds of thousands to overthrow their government for corruption. The Biden strategy
After the 2016 election, panicked, wounded Democrats settled on a diagnosis. Trump, for all his mania, bigotry, and chaos, had given angry Americans something to vote for. And the problem with the betting odds is that people are betting based on the polls they're reading, so they're not an independent measure. If anything, betting odds are a trailing measure from the polls.

Some Republican governors have begun connecting directly with the vice president in order to circumvent President Trump.
Is the long-predicted Republican crack-up finally here? Pollsters and social scientists have been predicting an “emerging Democratic majority” for more than two decades.
Their main rationale was demographic. Groups that tended to vote for Democrats were expanding—college-educated, Hispanic, African American, older voters—while the core Republican base was contracting.
We published the first such piece, by Paul Starr, in 1997 (!), and two frequent Prospect contributors, John Judis and Ruy Teixeira, wrote a book by that title in 2002. As Starr pointed out, Bill Clinton, as an emblem of the new moderate South, made inroads in the 1996 election in several Southern states.
The most recent and comprehensive account, by our friend Stan Greenberg in his new book RIP GOP, identifies even more powerful demographic and ideological trends. Young people and single women are more progressive and intensely Democratic than ever. Old folks are coming back to the Dems, given the Trump-driven calamities in nursing homes. Racial justice is a majority cause once again.
What took so long for the emerging Democratic majority to emerge? One reason was electoral theft—the 2000 election. There were also major elements of theft in the form of voter suppression in 2016. And clearly, theft will be the main obstacle to a big Democratic win in 2020.
A second factor was the Republican embrace of the racist South. The sort of racial moderates among Southern governors represented by Jimmy Carter (Georgia), Bill Clinton (Arkansas), and Ray Mabus (Mississippi) have been eclipsed by Republican versions of George Wallace.
A third factor was the desertion of two core parts of the traditional Democratic base—older voters who were loyal to Democrats based on Social Security, Medicare, and memories of FDR; and white working-class voters who once voted wall-to-wall Democratic in the North, but saw neoliberal Democrats doing a lot for bankers and not much for them.

Not long after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the head of a fossil fuels industry group requested a call with the president’s transition team. The subject: Barack Obama’s requirement that oil and gas companies begin collecting data on their releases of methane.
That outreach, by Kathleen Sgamma, president of the Western Energy Alliance, appeared to quickly yield the desired results.
“Looks like this will be easier than we thought,” David Kreutzer, an economist who was helping to organize the new president’s Environmental Protection Agency, wrote of canceling the methane reporting requirement in an email to another member of the transition team on Feb. 10, 2017.
Three weeks after that email, the EPA officially withdrew the reporting requirement — and effectively blocked the compilation of data that would allow for new regulations to control methane, a powerful climate-warming gas.
Fossil fuel industry players, working with allies in the early days of Trump’s EPA, engineered the repeal of the methane reporting requirements with no internal analysis, then created the rationale for the decision after the fact.
That repeal illegally delayed the development of additional regulations to reduce methane emissions that the Trump administration did not want.
