If I lay off for a day or two or rotate my tasks the pain goes away. Today is DEFINITELY a no-yardwork day!
I wish you and BRENDA could have had a cup of tea or coffee with me, and just wandered the yard and enjoyed the cool quiet morning, and then gone inside to some comfy couches and have a nice chat!

So I have a ??? for you, or anyone who knows anything about gardening:
I have small space about 20'X10' in the backyard devoted to native/xeric plants; I used to have a ceanothus (california lilac) in there, but it cratered after growing spectacularly for 2 years. I'd like to replace it with something, it would be nice if it were evergreen fruit-producing but I can't find any that do both, so am looking at mexican elderberry, native mulberry, or persimmon.
any thoughts?

Well, the rain held off on my walk. Not so far but only the end of May. I am hoping that June and further on will be dry. Wet in spots up the Interior and the Valley, down to where I am and Vancouver Island. Still seeing snow at higher elevations. Suppose to warm up for the mainland next week. I hope so.
ETA Forgot to mention the tornado that happened in Saanich which is on Vancouver Island. No damage done except for some dirt thrown around and a trampoline that it picked up and then dropped further down the road from the house where it belonged.

from a distance, they look light lemon-yellow.
It can get quite large around, given time. I recommend Sambucus nigra ssp. caerulea v just the regular Sambucus nigra, because the ssp. has a far longer bloom time. https://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/specieslist.cgi?namesoup=sambucus&
;countylist=any&plantcomm=any&format=photos&orderby=taxon I noticed them blooming already out in the fields where they planted themselves. The ones I see do seem to be the ssp. because they bloom all spring through summer.
There is a drought tolerant Texas native mulberry - morus microphylla - that's a sweet-looking shrub-tree. BUT, I would NOT recommend it. It's wind pollinated and reputed to be highly allergenic. I would plant it only in a far removed spot.
Neither Asian nor native persimmons are terrific to look at as trees - kind of like dreary avocados - but certainly would fill the spot.
Even though they're not native, have you thought of pomegranate? They're a drought tolerant, attractive tree.
