There are a lot more things more horrific that have happened to us humans than Coivd-19, as far as I'm concerned - like for example, the Black Death. So I don't know why one would pick this particular example.
But in general, I think the question boils down to belief. On the face of it, if a god has, as we're taught to believe, us humans lovingly in mind, then COVID-19 makes no sense. Even further, the suffering and death of infants who never did anything bad to anybody makes even less sense. Or, if you believe in reincarnation, and suffering and death are just rewards for a previous life, then how do you explain all the many extra lives on the planet? Sooner or later, you have to invoke belief to erase the many conundrums you encounter in any religion. (I exempt the Tao, because it doesn't have a god(s) and requires no beliefs to countervail experience, which makes it imo a philosophy.)
As for me, personally, when I thought about it as a pre-teen, I pretty quickly realized that there was no way to prove or disprove the existence of her/ him/ it/ them. So I have no opinion about the actual existence of god(s).
But when it comes to religion, they ALL promise to be The ONE & ONLY REAL DEAL© (accept no substitutions!), with eternal damnation for everyone else. And I rankled at the idea that salvation could be so arbitrary as to condemn virtually the entire human race for the sin of being born in the wrong time, at the wrong place. As proposed by religions, salvation is a roulette wheel, except the chances of winning are infinitesimally small.
As I got older, I also realized that every religion claims that god(s) is unknowable, and then has the gall to tell you exactly what god wants from you, because - somehow - they know the unknowable mind of god. To me, that made the religion hucksters about as honest as card sharks.
That's not to say that I haven't known honorable people who're deeply religious. And they include Christians, Muslims, and Hindus, as well as some Confucians. But they were the ones who quietly tried to live the precepts in their hearts and actions, not the loudmouthed charlatans. One might call those honorable people the publicans.
My opinion, of course.

I'm not a believer. I don't believe that any of the stories in the Bible are real. They are fables that teach moral lessons, not too dissimilar from fairy tales pre-Disney bastardization.

Given the content that people have already been reading for thousands of years in the Bible stacked against this not-at-all-scary virus out there, The Coomph would never disprove the existence of God. Certainly not in the minds of those who already believe and love him despite the horrible things in that book.
Look at yourself and realize that your Atheism is a religion onto itself. It takes just as much faith to believe that there is not a higher power as it takes to believe that there is.

The existence of atoms was denied until there was a sudden flip-flop in belief. Now almost the entire world believes based on the say-so of a few actual scientists. The same is possible with the existence of God. God won't have to do more than atoms did to prove they exist and the change in belief won't depend on what a few experimental scientists have documented. What would that proof be? Some examples:
