Quote:The difference was that in Taiwan, if the President screws this up, the President will be assassinated and the country will be invaded by mainland China. On the other hand, Trump has no fear that Canada will invade or Mexico will send a hit-man to the White House, so he feels free to be as stupid and lazy as he wants to be. There will be NO CONSEQUENCES for Trump if he goofs off at his job.

The difference is there's a lot less bureaucracy in Taiwan and the US president needs to cater to a bunch of whiny little bitches who have zero ability to remember what they were whining about two weeks ago.
This is your fault. This is Democrat's fault. This is Legacy Media's fault.

Quote:6ix, the Republican Party created the America Health Care System to make the maximum amount of money for doctors. That is NOT how Taiwan is run. That is why Taiwan does better with Covid-19: When Kiyomi Liu moved to Taiwan from America in 2013, she was taken aback – in a good way – by its cheap medical fees.

“I paid NT$150 (US$5) for an obstetrician-gynecologist consultation, an ultrasound and medicine at a neighborhood clinic,” said the Hsinchu-based American. “Back home, my bill came up to US$1,000 (NT$30,700) for the same procedure. I had to pay everything out of my own pocket because my insurance deductible was US$1,500 (NT$46,300).”
Liu is among the 99.6 percent of Taiwan’s 23.57 million people covered under the government-run National Health Insurance (NHI), a universal health care scheme that ensures every resident has access to quality and affordable medical care. The comprehensive coverage includes both inpatient and outpatient care, prescription drugs, traditional Chinese medicine, dental services and home nursing care. NHI enrollment is mandatory for all citizens and foreign residents in Taiwan.
With over 92 percent of clinics and hospitals contracted to NHI, patients have a wide choice of doctors or hospitals to choose from. Wait times are short. You pay a modest out-of-pocket fee (copayment) ranging from NT$80 to NT$360 (US$2.50 to US$11.50) per consultation. If you are willing to fork out a bit more, you can go directly to specialty care without a referral. Each NHI user holds a ‘smart card’ that contains the user’s medical data. A swipe of the card gives your doctor instant access to real-time medical records.
Premiums are paid by the insured, employers and the government and calculated based on wages and supplementary incomes like bonuses and stock dividends. The government covers the premiums for low-income households, military personnel and prisoners. NHI collects premiums from the insured and reimburse payments to medical care providers. It also earns revenues from lottery and tobacco excise taxes.

Taiwanese will surpass Americans in wealth someday. It might already have happened because this chart only goes to 2010:

Hey Brenda - I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
To me Vancouver BC, Toronto, and Montreal are all highly international cities and I thought natural epicenters for an outbreak (though I was truly surprised by the sheer volume of air traffic between SoCal and China when I looked it up).
So to some extent it seems like it might have been a combination of lucky circumstances - BC was behind signal places like Washington state, Ontario, and Quebec. OTOH it took a very confident health officer to make the tough calls she made about borders, travel, and stay-at-home. Also, when it comes to testing, I think your health system isn't nearly as inflexible as the US one, so you were able to learn about cases earlier rather than later. I did look up the testing criteria for Ontario, and while it talks about high risk histories, it didn't forbid testing either. It left it up to the individual doctors. I imagine BC is the same. Here the Washington state case wasn't tested for 4 days because the CDC refused because ... the person didn't meet CDC criteria for testing. And I honestly don't think the CDC relented, I think someone fudged the test request to make it happen. And that started cracking the door open in the US to marginally expanded criteria. But here the testing is overwhelmed across the country and besides, now it's far beyond test and trace (tracing individual contacts).
Anyway, yeah, it looks like there was a bit of luck involved - BC didn't acquire SARS-COV-2 until rather late, and there was those spring break example form other provinces. But then, your health officer and your health system are capable of doing the job.
No worries Kiki.
You would think so because each of those cities are major, major ports of entry into Canada, from the US and the rest of the world.
I have to admit that once all levels of government here in Canada saw what was happening they jumped on measures as fast as possible to protect. Health officers here are still hammering home the stay-at-home order as much as possible along with no unnecessary travel.
I think BC testing was left up to the doctors and that is a good thing. There was tracing done and that seemed to help find cases as well.
Of course now any travellors returning home Have to self-isolate for 14days and all help will be given to anyone who needs it. Canada is still bringing citizens home from abroad I believe but only through Vancouver airport and Montreal. They might be able to use Toronto and Edmonton as well.
We seem to be holding our own even Quebec and Ontario. No one is being denied treatment that I know of.
A little area of Montreal is making their streets one way. That means you walk on one side of the street to get where you are going and the other side to get home.
Another big worry for Vancouver and Toronto is the homeless situation. Vancouver has the poorest neighborhood in the country the Downtown East side. There is anything and everything you can think of there. So far there have been no cases there but the Vancouver city government is trying to find unused buildings to use the homeless and if need be for isolation. Hopefully that won't be needed. But they are trying to get more support staff into the area.

In the middle of a press briefing on Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the government’s top infectious disease expert, tried to answer a question about whether an anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, could be an effective treatment for Covid-19. Trump has continuously touted the drug in public despite the fact that there is no conclusive proof of its usefulness and plenty of evidence of its harmful side effects. His heedless quackery threatens to kill thousands.
The last thing Trump wanted was for Fauci to tell the truth while standing next to him in front of the press, so Trump blocked him from answering the question and attacked reporters for asking about it. “You don’t have to ask the question again,” Trump told a reporter, while complaining that Fauci had already talked about the anti-malarial drug “15 times.”
Fauci has tried hard over the last few weeks to avoid directly contradicting Trump, particularly in official press briefings. He has instead used alternative media interviews — including a popular online chat with NBA star Stephen Curry — to try to get the truth out.
Yet the fact that Fauci must stand by and let Trump spout dangerous misinformation shows how Trump’s purges have intimidated the remaining professionals inside the government.
