CBS NEWS: “So you’ve seen pandemics over the decades, how does this one compare with everything?”
DR. DREW: “A bad flu season is 80,000 dead, we’ve got about 18,000 dead from influenza this year, we have a hundred from corona. Which should you be worried about influenza or Corona? A hundred versus 18,000? It’s not a trick question. And look, everything that’s going on with the New York cleaning the subways and everyone using Clorox wipes and get your flu shot, which should be the other message, that’s good. That’s a good thing, so I have no problem with the behaviors. What I have a problem with is the panic and the fact that businesses are getting destroyed that people’s lives are being upended, not by the virus, but by the panic. The panic must stop. And the press, they really somehow need to be held accountable because they are hurting people.”
Preach on, brother.

I think this is the extent of the way he claims people are being hurt: "businesses are getting destroyed that people’s lives are being upended". I haven't seen any businesses in my neighborhood getting destroyed. Have you seen any businesses getting destroyed over by your way, Jack?
I also think this is being overtly politicized. Every time I read something in the 'news' that mentions SARS-COV-2 and Trump in the same place, it makes me grind my teeth ... the same way that idiots focused on Trump's tweets make me grind my teeth.
There's just too much hyperbole on both fronts.
But I think this could roll out to be a credible problem.
Apropos of nothing, what we haven't seen to date is a country that just decided to let it rip. Let it do its worst. That would be an interesting data point.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Sure, it's hyperbole, but it's nice to hear it from the other side when all you hear is the sky is falling from everybody else.
I'm the wrong person to be asking about "businesses failing" though. I don't ever spend any money on anything.
But yanno what? If facemasks are sold out at a hardware store where I live, a place that isn't going to actually feel any effects of this until long after we would know if it was really bad through places like you live, I'd be willing to bet that patronage to places like restaurants are quite a bit down too. McDonalds will weather that storm just fine, but what about the local ma and pa food joints that don't have the same resources? Or small two screen movie theaters like the one down by my brother that I love?
I won't even get into how many gross advertisements focusing on COVID and Trump I heard on the radio from Bloomberg's campaign in the few days I was helping my friend in the south suburbs of Chicago.
I'm a patient man. I look forward to this blowing over and not being anything serious so I can tell everybody that I told you so, again.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

How many have to die before you think it's significant? I've asked you that before.
What if the actions you think are too excessive are the ones that keep it from being the worst-case scenario? Since one can't prove a negative, you'll never be able to make your claim!
You have a really bad case of poorly-defined endpoint!

Yeah, THE PRESS killed those 30 people.
God, yer dense.
I think we're about to get a big uptick in deaths due to it. The numbers are calling for it.

Dr Sam Fink is treating two patients stricken with COVID-19 and is friends with a third patient in Tarzana, CA
All three men are in intensive care, including one who is in his forties and has no preexisting conditions.
How many people you think we can fit in intensive care??? Maybe a couple hundred in our area...out of thousands possible??
But you have no intention of taking up intensive care space, so no problem....right?

I dunno. Let's say 100 Million. In the US alone.
I've already answered your question when you asked it before.
If 33% of the population isn't curbed at the very least, and then maintained at that level, things are never going to get better when it comes to climate change and lack of resources.
If COVID doesn't do it, something else will eventually come around and do it. Maybe we run out of cillins that will save us all from Staph?
It becomes a problem when it's clear that the thing finally comes around is so devastating that it dwindles the human population down to numbers that can't even maintain today's technology and the power grid and the infrastructure.
Sorry, but 30 people got divorced in the time it took me to write this reply in the US alone.
I'm not worried about COVID.

Michael Osterholm, the infectious disease expert who has been warning for a decade and a half that the world will face a pandemic, says the US is ill-prepared to combat the coronavirus due to a shortage of equipment and supplies.
Osterholm, of the University of Minnesota, wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine in 2005 that, "Time is running out to prepare for the next pandemic. We must act now with decisiveness and purpose." He reiterated this point in his 2017 book, "Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs."
BERGEN: So, if in a regular year in the US, the case fatality rate of influenza is 0.1%, you're saying that COVID-19 will be higher?
OSTERHOLM: Twenty to 30 times higher. It could easily be that. We just don't know yet and it could go down based on what we learn.
BERGEN: So, if the 0.1% case fatality rate of the flu kills tens of thousands in any given year in the US, what are the implications for the coronavirus?
OSTERHOLM: It's obvious that this is a very serious challenge. I think that it was unfortunate that a number of public health professionals said early on when COVID-19 first emerged that annual influenza was a much more serious problem.
What they hadn't understood was that they were only watching the opening scene of this particular "coronavirus winter," as I call it. We can expect to see a large number of deaths moving forward -- far surpassing any severe influenza season.
The Chinese data suggests that anywhere from 5% to 10% of COVID-19 cases will become severe illnesses. These cases require a tremendous amount of expert health care; that makes this disease even more of a challenge relative to influenza.
BERGEN: Are we equipped with the ICUs and the ventilators to deal with a large-scale group of people coming in with these kinds of symptoms?
OSTERHOLM: Absolutely not. Right now, today, in Minneapolis-St. Paul, every one of the beds that we use for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a high-level machine that supports the heart and lungs and is critical for keeping people alive who have illness like COVID-19, are filled. This is in part because we are just coming off a moderate to severe flu season and that has really stretched our care capacity. On top of that, a number of hospitals throughout the country have only 5 to 10 days' worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) available for health care workers. They don't know when over-stretched PPE manufacturers will be able to deliver more.

You might even be right, but it still goes into my mental shit-can because all YOU do is fling shit.

Preparing for pandemics is much like preparing for office building fires. The building owners don't want to pay for fire sprinklers added retroactively to old buildings, seeing it as a waste of their money but once the fire starts it is too late. The US didn't want to waste money preparing for a pandemic. Now it is too late for the equivalent of sprinklers. Instead, the entire fire department will have to be called. The building fire could have been kept to one floor, but now it might spread to the entire building. Hope not.
This is not an office building, but it is an example from yesterday of how being a cheapskate owner will get 72 people burned to death:

Incorrect, Signym, you are shit head, unable to imagine a pandemic is similar to high rise fire. Coronavirus and Grenfell are similar; the authorities did a poor job before, during and after because they could not imagine a man-made catastrophe.

Trump's campaign says it's still full steam ahead, announcing a large "Catholics for Trump" event at a Wisconsin convention center on March 19.
In contrast to Trump's indifference to pandemic, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden both canceled rallies planned to cap off Super Tuesday II.

wtf?
The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.
The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus. Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.
This White House is insane. How many extra people are going to die because they’re hellbent on letting Donald Trump pretend that everything is totally under control instead of doing everything they can to limit the spread and mortality rate of the coronavirus?

Maybe you should be arguing with Jack about this. I'm not the one saying it's no big deal.
In fact, I started the original thread about this LONG before you figured out it might be a problem decided to be a political opportunist about it. You even argued and said this wasn't meaningful, and that any medical problems were a result of being a wrong-thinking republican (which btw I'm not).
Remember?
In fact, you're doing EXACTLY what Trump is doing, and treating this as a political event, and not the serious real-world life-and-death crisis it is. I would be shocked as hell if you could post 5 posts in a row about this, and not mention Trump or his administration even once.

“My net worth fluctuates, and it goes up and down with the markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings,” Donald Trump said in a 2007 deposition for a lawsuit he filed against journalist Tim O’Brien for reporting that Trump was not a billionaire. “Let me just understand that a little,” said O’Brien’s lawyer. “Your net worth goes up and down based upon your own feelings?” “Yes,” Trump said, “even my own feelings, as to where the world is, where the world is going, and that can change rapidly from day to day.”
I’m surfacing that exchange now because it’s a useful window into our present moment. The president of the United States has long believed three things: The first is that reality isn’t real, there’s only “narrative.” The second is that he controls that narrative in accordance with his feelings (and Fox News). The third is that only his feelings are real or worth considering. Tempting though it may be to dismiss these as the ravings of a solipsist, it’s to Trump’s credit that he has gotten a surprisingly large number of people to subscribe to these three tenets. Much of the apparatus of the executive branch is now led by people who bow to his whims and go to shocking lengths to make the things he says at least seem true. His attorney general has waved away investigations into the corruption he denies. The National Weather Service formally instructed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration not to correct the president’s Sharpie modification of Hurricane Dorian’s path, even if it meant giving Americans in danger the wrong information. The director of national intelligence is refusing to brief Congress on electoral interference, reportedly over concerns he might say things Trump would find upsetting.
Now Trump is trying to force-of-will a pandemic into not being a pandemic at all. “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear,” Trump said at the White House on Feb. 28.

I'm furious about the Legacy Media politicizing this and generating a ton of ad revenue from it.
I didn't realize the effect this fear mongering was having on people today until I had to restrain myself from giving a 66 year old woman that I know a hug because she probably would have recoiled in horror.
She's cracking up. She went to WalMart today and couldn't find anything she was looking for and she says the store was in shambles.

Look at Italy - they actually have a world-class medical system in the north (where the pandemic first hit) but because they didn't get control of the virus early thru strong government action (closing schools, banning gatherings, getting out the message of voluntary "social distancing") their hospitals are totally overwhelmed. Ambulance response times used to be eight minutes, it's now an hour. Surgical suites, general wards, hallways are all being turned into intensive care units and pathologists and ENTs and gynecologists are being turned into intensivists, doctors and nurses are burning out over too much work and seeing too many people die when all they can offer is a mask and an oxygen tank. Medical staff are themselves falling ill. And these north Italians are NOT flooding hospitals with the merest sniffle: They stay home for 10, 14 days until they can't stand it anymore.
The entire nation of Italy just now had to be put on lockdown.. If they had bitten the bullet a month ago, the economic pain and death would have been much, much lighter.
*****
According to some, we are where Italy was a month ago. In a month, we could be where Italy is now. Our hospitals could be in complete chaos, with COVID19 victims and heart attack victims and trauma victims all dying, equally unattended, in a crowded hospital corridor, like a scene out of Contagion.
If it gets that bad, Trump will deservedly be blamed. His first response was to blame China and prop up the stock market instead of taking prompt action to blunt the pandemic.
Nobody will blame Trump for COVID19 puncturing the stock bubble. But they WILL blame him if he fails to take effective action. (And, no, that doesn't included meaningless but dramatic publicity stunts.) Whatever the Italian PM Conte should have been doing a month ago, Trump should be doing now. That might mean closing schools and shuttering all shops except food and pharmacies. Maybe even temporarily nationalizing the healthcare system and pharmaceuticals to mobilize resources to where they're needed most.
In the meantime ... and in the absence of government action ... practice social distancing. Don't go to voluntary gatherings, stay away from churches, schools, and doctors' offices, restaurants, bars, gyms etc. Don't touch your face. Wash yur hand often. If you have a mask, wear one. Learn how to take if off and put it on properly.

I was listening to KNX1070 and I was impressed with what state, local, and private entities are doing in the absence of federal leadership. A lot of activities have been cancelled completely, the UC system is going to online classes for at least a month, many schools are expected to be closed for at least a month - and so on.
I have no idea where they're getting their guidance from, but obviously someone has impressed on a few people the importance of doing this NOW, while it's still doable, instead of later, when the epidemic is in full swing and it'll be no help at all.
Anyway, tomorrow I'll finish my usual stocking up - which I always do to reduce trips and gas consumption - and gassing up, and continue to limit my trips.

The reviews on Wall Street to President Donald Trump’s prime-time Oval Office address on the response to the coronavirus were not kind.
From Trump’s misstatements of White House policy to his lack of clarity on the funding he wanted, analysts said the speech ended up being more harm than help in his apparent desire to calm financial markets. The speech included him saying that cargo from Europe would be blocked, which the White House clarified was not accurate and that the ban was limited to passengers.
Here’s a look at what some are saying, as markets kicked off another rough day, with U.S. stocks (S&P 500, -8.18%) falling sharply enough at the opening bell to trigger the week’s second trading halt.
• “President Trump in an extraordinary Oval Office address didn’t offer up major new ideas on stimulus and only said he’d propose a vague payroll tax holiday to Congress without strongly standing up for any firm size/magnitude. This effectively kicks the issue to Congress which is still planning to go on recess next week.” — Ernie Tedeschi, Evercore ISI
• “President Trump’s address to the nation was symptomatic of the lack of policy coordination in the face of a global coronavirus pandemic. Amidst rapidly rising domestic COVID-19 infections, the president blamed Europe for mismanaging the crisis, and imposed a 30-day ban of foreigners travelling from the region.” — Gregory Daco, Oxford Economics
• “In our view, the failure to include announcements of stronger domestic public health responses — from expanded testing to mobilization of emergency medical capabilities — will hinder Administration efforts to build public trust in the US effort. The counter to Trump’s response is already beginning to form, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) introduced her opening bid for what a stimulus package will look like.” — Clayton Allen, Height Securities
• “Markets are upset because 1) there are few policies to limit the near-term economic damage; 2) President Trump got several policies wrong, raising questions about policy coherence; and 3) characterizing this as a foreign virus suggests an unrealistic assessment of the risks.” — Paul Donovan, UBS
• “We are confident that a macroeconomically significant ($100bln+) fiscal policy package will eventually pass Congress, but likely not before the one-week recess beginning Friday. Markets will likely remain sensitive to headlines regarding negotiations between Congress and the administration.” — Andrew Hollenhorst, Citi

I think the panic is dying down, and being replaced by information and (local) action. Now that people have their security blankets (Toilet paper???) the real scarcity will be masks and hand sanitizer, which I think will be useful for EVERYONE who has contact with anyone. Also, basic chemicals for things like test kits and antivirals, which the USA gave up on making over a decade ago. Those darn (long, fragile) supply chains ... all I can say is: I told you so. We need to move basic manufacturing back to the USA.
I see the well-heeled, well-traveled, well-connected (movie stars, politicians, bankers, the elite) are getting nailed with the virus as much as anyone. Perhaps more so. I wonder if Trump himself is sick? His voice sounded really hoarse during his speech.

Trump Didn’t Nuke Denmark, He Nuked His Own Country
Back in the day—i.e., 2016—I always figured there were two big reasons to hope Donald Trump didn’t win the Republican nomination. The first and most important was his straight-up appeal to bigotry and xenophobia, which the other Republican nominees mostly didn’t share. The second was that he might nuke Denmark.
That was the joke, anyway, but it was just shorthand for Trump screwing up some kind of foreign policy emergency, getting himself deeper and deeper into a hole, and then somehow ending up in a war that no one wanted. Nobody thought this was especially likely, but still, it was a 1 percent risk that the other candidates didn’t pose.
Then Trump got elected and three years passed. No war. No real threat of a war, either. Maybe we were all wrong?
Nope. “War,” it turned out, was itself shorthand for an emergency that Trump’s personality would cause him to mismanage. And the emergency turned out to be a pandemic. At first, Trump’s narcissism prevented him from believing that anything could be seriously wrong while he was in charge. Then his xenophobia caused him to address the problem solely by closing off a border, even though no one thought that would work. That eventually morphed into Trump’s bullheadedness preventing him from admitting he was mistaken and changing tack. And that, in turn, has caused him to close yet more borders.
In the meantime, there’s no consistent leadership from the White House. No consistent set of recommendations. No plans for mass testing. No national plans for containment or quarantine. Just experts becoming ever more shrill as the president does nothing and Mitch McConnell shrugs.
So in the end, Trump did nuke Denmark. Metaphorically speaking, that is. But it’s not Denmark that will pay the price, because—again, metaphorically—it’s actually the United States that he’s nuked.

Donald Trump Is Panicky and Clueless
Last night, on national TV, in a prepared address, President Trump said that (a) we would ban all travel from Europe, (b) we would ban some or all trade with Europe, and (c) insurance companies had agreed to waive copays for coronavirus treatment. All of this was mistaken. The travel ban applies only to foreign nationals, not US residents. No trade is being banned. And insurance companies are waiving copays only for coronavirus testing, not treatment.
This morning, Trump said that everyone entering the United States is being tested. This is . . . what? A lie? A delusion? A panicky response to a question? Does anyone know? The truth, of course, is that we’re not testing anyone arriving in the US. Hell, people who are returning from the hottest hotspots in northern Italy have reported not even being questioned, let alone tested.
This is way beyond outrageous. It’s not a partisan thing. There’s something wrong with Trump, and it either needs to be addressed or he needs to be taken out of the loop. This kind of stuff can’t be allowed to continue.

The two week quarantine period is for potentially exposed people BEFORE they show symptoms.
There isn't a recommended post-recovery quarantine, but studies show that while sampling can find detectable viral RNA after recovery, those people aren't infectious.

Republicans Think Basic Public Health Measures Are Part of a Radical Left-Wing Agenda
An anonymous White House official said, “This is Democrats letting fear surrounding coronavirus be a vehicle to push their radical left agenda.” Trump echoed the point. “There are things in there that had nothing to do of what we are talking about,” he said, “It is not a way for them to get some of the goodies they have been able to get for the last 25 years.”
Trump didn’t specify what “goodies” he was talking about. Notably, neither did most of the other Republicans who have complained about the bill. This is worrisome, since it suggests that the GOP still doesn’t appreciate the scale of what the United States is facing, and views common-sense public health and economic measures as some sort “radical” leftist agenda.
The House bill is, in fact, a wide-ranging and fairly comprehensive response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It would guarantee free coronavirus testing by requiring insurers to pay for it and having Medicaid foot the full bill for the uninsured. It would add funding for unemployment benefits (since we’re probably going to see a lot of layoffs soon). It provides more food aid for families (a lot of kids are going to be without lunch when schools close). It would temporarily increase the federal government’s share of funding for Medicaid, to give state budgets a little relief as caseloads likely swell.
And importantly, it provides paid sick leave in two different ways. First, there’s an emergency benefit for workers affected by the coronavirus: The federal government will pay up to two-thirds of their usual earnings for as many as three months. Second, it would permanently require businesses to give workers seven days of paid sick leave, and an extra 14 during public health emergencies, with Washington covering the cost for small businesses.
These are all imminently sensible responses to the crisis at hand, which has shown that paid sick leave is an absolutely essential public health precaution. You want people to be able to get tested for this virus. You do not want them going to work and spreading an infection because they need to support themselves. You want people to be able to eat. You do not want consumer spending to crater.
And you should want to make paid sick leave permanent. It is demonstrably insane that we do not already require it. And it does not make any sense whatsoever for Congress to pass new, emergency paid leave mandates every time there is a public health crisis. Moreover, making sure that can people can take time off when they’re ill, even if there isn’t an emergency, will help prevent epidemics like this from occurring in the future.
Yet, Republicans are calling this some sort of radical, leftist plot, suggesting they still have no understanding of what it will take to address this crisis or prevent ones like it down the line.

FROM THE ARTICLE, O DENSE ONE.
"The shortest amount of time someone was infectious was eight days and the longest amount of time was 37 days."
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
"For the study, published in The Lancet, 191 patients from two hospitals in Wuhan - the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak - were studied.
The team used electronic medical records to collect demographic data as well as laboratory data.
Researchers detected the RNA of the virus - which carries the genetic information - in respiratory samples from patients for a median of 20 days after they first becoming sick.
The shortest amount of time someone was infectious was eight days and the longest amount of time was 37 days."
First of all - these were hospitalized patients, which means they were very ill. Second of all, the clock starts "after they first becoming (sic) sick" which means they became sick potentially days before they were even admitted, and through their stay in the hospital which could have been 4 weeks or more. Which means their infectious span started before they were admitted and through their stay in the hospital. And indeed, the article is geared towards infectiousness in the hospital.
Lastly, ALL PATIENTS HAVE TO TEST NEGATIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS BEFORE BEING RELEASED.

How bad could 10 minutes of reading a speech from a teleprompter possibly be? The answer turns out to be worse than I’d thought.
For starters, Trump misstated the policy, saying that he was banning all travel from Europe and eliding the fact that US citizens, US lawful permanent residents, and their families are exempted from the ban. On any given day, the planes from Europe are about half-full of Americans coming home, so the incorrect announcement that they’d all be stranded on the wrong continent set off a panic. Americans rushed to airports, paid extortionate prices for last-minute flights, and, worst of all, created large crowds in enclosed spaces — exactly what we’re supposed to be avoiding during the coronavirus pandemic.
Then he also screwed up by saying he was canceling all trade in goods from Europe, only to have his staff come out later and explain that he was misspeaking. This was, to be clear, a prepared address coming from a teleprompter. But he seemingly couldn’t clearly explain his own policies in a way that would avoid panic or misunderstanding.
The speech was, in other words, worse than simply saying nothing would have been. And this has been a hallmark of Trump’s public communications on the pandemic, which have been consistently misleading in a way that has induced confusion and failed at its goal of stemming anxiety.

Assuming the small chance we're even still talking about Coronavirus in November and the even smaller chance that Joe Biden wins, it will be hilarious the stuff he's going to be saying.
He's probably having Polio flashbacks right now.

That's good advice. Before the recent 2-week Dow plunge I had put in stop-sell limit orders for all my stocks. Well they all traded and I took a 10% hit on everything. After watching the Dow drop an additional 20% since then I'm elated that I applied the tourniquet when I did.

Good to hear.
It might go down quite a bit more.
It's not the Coronavirus I'm worried about at all, but the way that everybody is behaving. And I do mean pretty much everybody this time... not just the Legacy Media and/or politicians.
In the short term it's going to be pretty major, but I think we might be seeing a long term seismic shift of overall behavior patterns emerge from this one.

Coronavirus could do more economic damage than the financial crisis that led to the Great Recession.
Jason Furman was a top economic adviser to President Barack Obama, serving as deputy director of the National Economics Council from 2009 to 2013, and as chair of the Council of Economic Advisors from 2013 to 2017. He played a key role in designing the administration’s response to the financial crisis and Great Recession. He’s now a professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
I’ve spoken with Furman often over the years, and to put it bluntly, I’ve never heard him as alarmed as on Thursday. He believes that coronavirus could do more damage to the economy than the financial crisis did, and that policymakers aren’t even close to designing a large enough response. In addition, the virus is moving much faster than the financial crisis did, and the government officials who will need to respond to it are in danger of being infected by it.
A transcript of our conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity, follows.
Ezra Klein: Looking at the financial markets and economic data, how much does this feel like 2008 to you?
Jason Furman: At this point, this feels much worse than 2008. Lehman Brothers was quite bad, but it was the culmination of a sequence of things that had happened over 14 months. This hit all at once.
There were a lot of people lucky and privileged enough that they didn’t reduce their spending in 2008. But everyone is doing it now. I was in a restaurant yesterday, possibly for the last time for a while. I was in a taxi, possibly the last time for a while. There are entire industries I interact with where I’m realizing: “This may be the last time I’m paying you for a while.” That didn’t happen in 2008. When you start to think about all of that it just gives you a feeling for the enormity of this economically.
If two months from now we go back to normal, I think we’d be okay. If this lasts six months or longer — and I think that’s the more likely scenario — all of that just compounds. Even if you discover a cure in December, you still have people out of jobs, broken balance sheets, bankrupt companies that won’t be particularly eager to hire.
The economic effects might outlast the health effects.
Ezra Klein: Financial crises are fundamentally about uncertainty. Markets think an asset costs this much, but they’re wrong, and chaos ensues. This feels much more tangible: People are getting sick, or are afraid of getting sick, and so they’re staying home, or they’re not allowed to come into work, or they’re losing their jobs because their customers are gone. How different is that in its economic effects?
Jason Furman: In a financial crisis, there are multiple equilibriums. if you can stop the panic by guaranteeing markets or injecting capital, you can even get the opposite as money floods back into the market. Here, there’s a deadly germ out there and you don’t want to go near it for your sake and your community’s sake. There’s only one equilibrium: it’s economic inactivity until the danger passes.

Taiwan has only 47 coronavirus cases. Its response to the crisis shows that swift action and widespread healthcare can prevent an outbreak.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm
What was the 2017-2018 flu season like?
The 2017-2018 influenza season was a high severity season with high levels of outpatient clinic and emergency department visits for influenza-like illness (ILI), high influenza-related hospitalization rates, and elevated and geographically widespread influenza activity for an extended period. In 2017, CDC began using new methodology to classify seasonal severity and applied the methodology to the 2003-2004 through 2016-2017 seasons. The 2017-18 season was the first season to be classified as a high severity across all age groups.
When did the 2017-2018 flu season peak?
During the 2017-2018 season, influenza-like-illness (ILI) activity began to increase in November, reaching an extended period of high activity during January and February nationally, and remained elevated through the end of March. ILI peaked at 7.5%, the highest percentage since the 2009 flu pandemic, which peaked at 7.7%. Influenza-like illness (ILI) was at or above the national baseline for 19 weeks, making the 2017-2018 season one of the longest in recent years.
For more information, see the MMWR: 2017-18 Influenza Activity Update or visit FluView Interactive.
How many people died from flu during the 2017-2018 season?
While flu deaths in children are reported to CDC, flu deaths in adults are not nationally notifiable. In order to monitor influenza related deaths in all age groups, CDC tracks pneumonia and influenza (P&I)-attributed deaths through the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Mortality Reporting System. This system tracks the proportion of death certificates processed that list pneumonia or influenza as the underlying or contributing cause of death. This system provides an overall indication of whether flu-associated deaths are elevated, but does not provide an exact number of how many people died from flu.
During the 2017-2018 season, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was at or above the epidemic threshold for 16 consecutive weeks. During the past five seasons, the average number of weeks this indicator was above threshold was 11 (range of 7 to 15 weeks). Nationally, mortality attributed to P&I exceeded 10.0% for four consecutive weeks, peaking at 10.8% during the week ending January 20, 2018.
As it does for the numbers of flu cases, doctor’s visits and hospitalizations, CDC also estimates deaths in the United States using mathematical modeling. CDC estimates that from 2010-2011 to 2013-2014, influenza-associated deaths in the United States ranged from a low of 12,000 (during 2011-2012) to a high of 56,000 (during 2012-2013). Death certificate data and weekly influenza virus surveillance information was used to estimate how many flu-related deaths occurred among people whose underlying cause of death on their death certificate included respiratory or circulatory causes. For more information, see Estimating Seasonal Influenza-Associated Deaths in the United States and CDC’s Disease Burden of Influenza page.
So let me highlight this first

Coronavirus Is Now Growing Faster in the US Than in Europe
Based on data from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Data Repository, here is how the outbreak has progressed in six Western countries. See graphs here:
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2020/03/coronavirus-is-now-growing-fast
er-in-the-us-than-in-europe/
The charts are all done using a log scale on the y-axis, which means that exponential growth shows up as a straight line.
So far, every country has shown the same growth rate except for one: the United States.
We are 11 days behind Italy, but our caseload has suddenly started ticking up past normal. Note that the Trump Tick might look small, but this is because it, too, is on a log scale. That small tick indicates that we have about 2x or 3x more cases than you’d expect at this stage.
Why? Probably because the federal government refuses to act with the seriousness it should. Because that might be bad for Donald Trump’s reelection chances.
Trump grows more irate as his attempts to contain coronavirus fallout fail

Check out the video of Trump/Coronavirus. Everybody, except Trump, is facing forward. Trump is glaring at the speakers. Trump wants to jump in and start babbling, pretending that knows what he is talking about. He is a fruitcake.

I'm not being callous. It's called Cruel to be Kind.

You're going to get it. Everybody you know is going to get it.
Most people are going to be OK, including MOST OLD PEOPLE.
Quote:So, even though you admit it's a virus ... and that the virus can make people sick ... you don't think people should take proven effective measures against getting infected.
Eating right, exercising and taking your vitamins are going to do you a hell of a lot more good than worrying about wearing face masks and stocking up on Purel.
Because ... why?

Your final question is the only thing that is worth replying to here, although like the rest of it I'm just repeating myself here.

I'll keep posting this until you understand this is a FACT, no matter how much you want to ignore it. Slowing down the spread SAVES LIVES - lives you seem like you'd rather flush down the toilet ASAP.

I don't see how.
The virus isn't deadly to most people. Even most old people recover from it.
The longer this lasts, the longer the Legacy Media makes people panic and it kills people's 401ks, kills small businesses, inconveniences people who want to buy stuff but can't because people are hoarding, and anybody who enjoys sporting events can't attend any right now.
Step out into the sunlight, let people cough on you and let's get this shit over with tomorrow.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

Quote:What's the difference between a 1% and 6% death rate? That's the difference between people getting medical help IF THEY NEED IT and not. When the medical system is overwhelmed, people won't get the care that could help them recover. Instead, they die.

If you don't overwhelm the system, people will get the care they need, and live. More people living is what happens when you SLOW IT DOWN.
But you'd rather everyone get it at once so the maximum number of people die?

You talk about this as if you know for certain.
You are just parroting what somebody else told you.
You can't shit on other people here for doing that when it suits them and then do the same goddamned thing yourself when it suits you.
You need to take a good long look in the mirror, Kiki.
Because you right here right now... You're acting just like these never Trumper chucklefucks when swallowing all the Russia horseshit that Maddow was shoveling in their mouths for 2 years.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

Not gonna try and convince you of reality - or point out your extremely selective ethics, except to say you'd give WISHI a run for the money when it comes to callousness in the interests of an agenda.
Bye.
