Yanno, I worked in the environmental regulatory field for years, and my older sister was an oil and gas geologist. Highly aware of Deepwater Horizon, she has told me stories about oil platforms that just ... disappeared into the ocean. And when a gas storage field nearby had a monthlong blowout, all I could think of was "It's like Deepwater Horizon, except on land". And then there's fracking ... had a very interesting conversation with someone who runs a big fracking operation, and some problems with oil recovery operations in old oil fields including blown out pipelines that left gas-and-oil-filled sinkholes in downtown city streets.

I doubt there's anything Madcow could tell me that I don't already know.

President Putin chose a different path, not least because establishing a diversified economy in post-Soviet Russia would have been really hard, requiring Russia to build and sustain a lot of things it hadn’t ever had on a national scale: a reasonable expectation of the impartial rule of law, a reasonably competent government responsive to its people, reasonable public investment in the kind of physical and financial infrastructure that allows businesses to get established and grow, reasonable prospects for upward mobility and maybe even getting rich if you had talent and gumption and a little good luck. Results may vary as to what counts as “reasonable” in any one time and place. But a few things were certain: building that kind of a Russia would take a ton of work. And it would provide no guarantee of a lifetime leadership job for any one ruler—no matter how good he looked shirtless on a bear.

Putin opted for a shorter and easier path, which solved two problems: it gave him permanent job security, and it saved Russia the pain in the butt of actually building itself a modern twenty-first-century economy and government. Putin’s most fateful decision for his country was that oil and gas wouldn’t just be the profitable crown jewel in Russia’s diversified economic array; it would be Russia’s everything. And Putin would exercise almost complete control over it and use it in whatever way he saw fit.

It turns out to have been a colossal mistake, with grotesque consequences. For Russia, for the United States, for pretty much everyone except the oil and gas industry, and maybe Putin himself.

Now in his twentieth year running the show, Vladimir Putin presides over a metaphysical unforced error: the tragic scuppering of one of the potentially great nations in the world. Russia has been assiduously engineered into a sclerotic dictatorship; its economy wholly dependent on its one indispensable industry, which is by design almost solely monopolized by its big, lousy, noncompetitive state-controlled oil and gas companies, which are all run by spies or thugs or judo guys, and almost exclusively for the benefit of Vladimir Putin and his global aims. Their companies are not exactly soaring on the strength of their R&D prowess. And there’s a good reason for that. No one, in any major Russian enterprise, has been allowed to succeed or prosper legitimately and on his own terms. Anyone who rose to any station must owe that ascent to Putin, and answer to him for it. That has been doubly

U.S. oil exports are up to 1.6 million barrels a day, according to a recent Reuters report. That’s 9 percent of total refining capacity: 17.6 million barrels, no one is sure why.

These are the same morons who think the price of gas is what’s listed at the pump Second. At least two thirds of our Middle Eastern military budget since WW11 goes to protecting that oil. And the transportation routes to get that oil here. Add that to the price at the pump and see what our local trolls think then.

My point, renewables, not coal and oil is the way to go.

Crowd-pleasers to get public approval

Why does Vladimir Putin suddenly feel the need to write all this into Russia's constitution?

It has less to do with reflecting current values in society and more to do with creating talking points that conceal the suspected chief reason behind the constitutional rewrite: providing a legal basis for President Putin to remain in a position of influence or power after 2024 - if not as president, then in some other role.

Among the proposed changes that get little mention in the state media here is the inclusion in the constitution of a little-known body called the State Council. It's believed this could be a possible future power base for Mr Putin. Other amendments will end up strengthening the power of the president.

But since Mr Putin has decided he wants Russians to vote on the proposals, he needs to find a way of getting people excited about the changes - and getting them to the ballot boxes on 22 April. That's where the populist slogans come in - and subjects like God, family and marriage - as well as promises to include in the constitution support for wages and pensions.

It's a great read. I confess to getting a bit bored in places, but then it is pretty heavy going. As usual, Maddow gets so much right and sees so much more than most of us could hope to - highly recommend, glad you read it.
