President Donald Trump has lots and lots of thoughts about the novel coronavirus. Unfortunately, most of those thoughts are either wrong or factually questionable.
At a press conference during his visit to India on Tuesday, Trump made a number of claims about the virus that were at best hugely optimistic and at worst deeply misleading.
"I think that's a problem that's going to go away," Trump said of the virus.
In that news conference, the President insisted that "they have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we're very close to a vaccine." There's no available evidence that a vaccine is "close," in fact, most infectious disease experts say developing a vaccine for the virus is roughly a year away.
Trump also claimed in the news conference that all the US coronavirus patients "are getting better ... they're all getting better." That followed a tweet very early Tuesday morning in India that read: "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"
Trump has repeatedly offered rosy predictions about the disease's arc -- most notably pushing the idea that warming temperatures (as winter turns to spring across North America) will reduce its impact much like seasonal flu.
There are mistruths and there MISTRUTHS. And when you are misleading people -- whether intentionally or not -- about a public health emergency, it's very much in that latter category. Because Trump is a known prevaricator and exaggerator, there is a tendency to view all of his mistruths through the there-he-goes-again lens.

Without looking too deeply into the whys and wherefores ... it seems the death rate is sensitive to either the (1) ability of the medical system to treat the illness or (2) the abundance of test kits and thoroughness of testing or (3) the race being struck.
When the virus hits a shipful of wealthy, mostly Anglos, or several towns of Italians, the death rate appears pretty low (0.5%). Higher than the regular flu (0.08% usually attributed to the flu) but not as bad as reoprted from China (2-2.5%).
OTOH, if reinfection is possible and the symptoms are worse than the first infection, Japan's strategy (let people "self isolate", only treat the sickest) is going to come back and bite them in the butt, because the virus won't sweep thru leaving behind a resistant population, it will sweep thru and leave behind an especially vulnerable one, ripe for an even worse crisis later.
It's critically important that this issue of "reinfection" be understood: What kind of immunity is built up (if any)? How often does reinfection occur? Are the symptoms worse that the first infection? Among other things, if the immune response is weak or (worse) counterproductive, then the idea of a vaccine doesn't promise much.

Hmm... I take that back about death rate in Italy. 322 cases, 10 dead, is 3%.
Now. There are a lot of questions about China's reported death rate. One thing that statisticians noted is that it stubbornly stayed at 2.1%. Normally, you would expect to see fluctuation, so the thought is that China is fudging its numbers.
The other problem with "death rate" is that, while it's easy to count the dead, it's a lot more difficult to count the infected, especially if a number of people have mild cases (attributed to normal flu) or are even apparently healthy. If there is a lack of test kits ... or the tests produce false negatives ... then the infection rate wil be undercounted, potentially significantly, which will create an inflated death rate.
I don't know how these things are done in epidemiology-land, but it seems to me that the only way to get a true infection rate is to take a random sampling of the apparently healthy, as well as the apparently sick. Pretty sure that isn't happening anywhere!

Trump’s first budget proposal contained proposed cuts to the CDC that former Director Tom Frieden warned were “unsafe at any level of enactment.”
Congress mercifully didn’t agree to any such cuts, but as recently as February 11 — in the midst of the outbreak — Trump proposed huge cuts to both the CDC and the National Institutes of Health.
Perhaps because his budget officials were in the middle of proposing cuts to disease response, it’s only over this past weekend that they pivoted and started getting ready to ask for the additional money that coping with Covid-19 is clearly going to cost.
