I love the Lovecraftian Mythos. I just can't stand reading actual Lovecraft. To be fair though, it's been about 20 years since I've tried giving it a good read. Maybe it's not as painful to slog through in my old age as it was when I was still a kid.

I was first introduced to Lovecraft on accident, when I was at the library and saw a really cool cover art on a book called "Lovecraft 2000", which was a collection of short stories that were influenced by the works of Lovecraft. Not all of them were winners, but there was some really good stories in there. So when I went back I got a collection of Lovecraft's short stories and only made it through about 1 1/2 of them before I put it down and never read him again. It felt like homework. Like trying to read Tolkien or the Bible.


Games based in Lovecraft lore are fascinating to me. I really loved one called Call of Cthulhu on the original XBox, and when I saw a movie called Dagon I was thrilled when a very intense scene in the movie almost matched one of the most intense parts of that game shot for shot, even though Dagon was a much more modernized retelling of The Shadow Over Innsmouth.


I wish somebody could do justice to Lovecraft's ideas in the movies. Dagon was good, but it fell short of great, even though I enjoyed it a lot. Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness" is probably the best film ever made that was influenced heavily by Lovecraft, but it also was not without its flaws. Most other adaptations or movies influenced by Lovecraft are just plain not good. That is a shame.

Hopefully they never put Lovecraft in the hands of Michael Bay or JJ Abrams.

I know nothing of H.P. Lovecraft. What I find odd is how seemingly way out of sync these stories seem to be from the time period. That alone is truly unique. Kinda like Tolkien, but I can't claim to know anything about Lovecraft's back story. Just haven't seemed drawn to find out yet, but given the current state of sci-fi and super hero wokeness, going back to early sci-fi writing may be in order.

One reason why I'm so drawn to Godzilla and the Legendary franchise. So far, lacking utterly in any wokiness.

Did you ever see In the Mouth of Madness?

If you have, and you liked it, you'll probably at least like Lovecraftian stuff even if you find you don't enjoy the read either.

Another movie Sam Neil did, Event Horizon, also had a fairly Lovecraftian vibe to it. But I'm still kind of on the fence if I liked that one or not.

Dagon is also a good watch if you don't mind the indie vibe of it all.

I'm not a fan of horror. So there's that.
Never saw Mouth of Madness.
Did see Event Horizon, and hated it.

Well... as far as I know, Lovecraft is strictly horror. But when I was a kid I would have said the same thing about Steven King and been wrong about that.

I'm on the fence about which movie to recommend if you're willing to give one a shot. Either Dagon (which is directly taken from Lovecraft), or John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness (which is heavily influenced by Lovecraft).

The thing about Dagon is, it's not a Carpenter flick... If you like Carpenter, you might like In the Mouth of Madness even if you're not a fan of horror.

They only get a 6.2 (Dagon) and a 7.2 (Madness) on IMDB, but those are probably pretty good scores for the genre. Madness didn't do well at the box office at all, but has developed quite a cult following over the years. I'm not even sure if Dagon got a release at all or was just straight to video. To this day, I'm the only one I know IRL who has seen it (or even heard of it) and I can't even get anybody else to watch it. Which I think is a shame...


Neither of these movies are anything like Event Horizon. Maybe a small bit of overlap in Madness, even amplified a bit by the presence of Neil in both flicks, but I think you'd agree they were very different if you saw Madness.


I'm no horror fan myself these days. Loved it when I was a kid, but I kind of grew out of it in my early 20's. I think the only horror movie in the last 20 years outside of Dagon that I really liked was The Ring.

I've actually never seen a Hellraiser movie in my life. I'm still going to give that video a watch though.

Week Seven update, with a little bit of Week Eight thrown in.

A few notes about Week Seven before the graph, with thoughts on Week Eight afterward.

1. Week Seven for Episode 9 showed three nights where it grossed quite a bit less than $300k per night. A night less than $300k did not happen for Joker until Week Nine.

2. Week Seven for Episode 9 also saw all four week nights dip well below $200 per theater on average, compared to Joker only seeing three nights dip below $200 by a smaller margin in that week. (No nights in Week Eight for Joker came close to dipping this low, but fully expect every week night for Episode 9 to do so again, likely in the single digits this time... see below chart).

Not really much more to add about Week Seven other than it got thoroughly spanked by Joker. There was nothing really unexpected, no holidays to change numbers either way... It probably should be noted that Superbowl Sunday definitely hurt Episode 9 on the 2nd, as the standard Sunday compared to Friday/Saturday ratio was pretty far below normal... .


But the real news this week isn't about last week. It's about next week... After the graph.
