Yup. Sure thing. Some random dude who has a kid with a crack whore. Some random dude who happens to be the Ex Vice President's son. Some random dude who's father happened to be VP while he got the job. Some random dude who's father happened to be giving away a billion US taxpayer dollars to the country where his son just happened to be working at without his father's knowledge.

My conclusion about debates in general are that they're a good place to lose votes, but not a good place to gain them. For example, while I don't like her policies, Klobuchar has always done extremely well, imo. She sticks to her points, and she presents them clearly, in a very 'down to earth' kind of way. She does to some extent what I thought Inslee did extraordinarily, which is to get out of the way of the message. But it doesn't win her points in the polls. OTOH Gabbard's take-down of Harris was the beginning of the end for Harris. (Well, that and Harris was an obvious opportunistic hypocrite whose motto seemed to be 'black AND female? - I got it all! How can I lose?'.)
But how Biden is still running at the top of the RealClear average of polls is still a mystery to me.

Now THIS will put some agita into democrats' chances if it gets out very widely:

Illegal immigrants blocked at border pray for Trump’s defeat, ‘I want Trump out’
Latin American migrants eager to enter the United States but held in Mexico are praying for President Trump’s election defeat in 2020, believing that a Democratic president will open the borders again.
“I want Trump out,” said Honduran Katherine Cabrera, who is being held in Tapachula, Mexico, with her baby.
“Once Trump is defeated, and the Democrats take over, things are going to get better,” added El Salvadoran Brenda Ramos.
The comments from Ramos and Cabrera and others were included in a Center for Immigration Studies border report on the attitudes held by migrants under the U.S.-Mexico initiative to stop unchecked illegal immigration.
The report found that instead of staying home, thousands of immigrants are “gambling” that it is worth staying in Mexican migrant camps in hopes Trump and his policies will go away.
Todd Bensman, the center’s senior national security fellow, wrote, “Dozens of politically woke migrants, like Honduran Wilson Valladaras, recently told CIS their decisions to stay in Mexico were predicated on the Trump-defeat gamble. Valladaras said he would wait for his Mexican asylum approval, move to Tijuana ‘until Trump leaves,’ and then cross over the U.S. border when the Democrats undo his policies because ‘right now, the Americans will throw you back’ to Mexico.”

So I FINALLY watched the entire debate.
No new ground was broken.
But I have a couple of observations -
Everyone (except Steyer) was going on and on about how Iran is a such a threat to the US and how important it is to keep it from getting nukes. And I think I wasn't paying close attention and just let the first 2 people wash over me. But after a minute or two it occurred to me that Iran is NOT an existential threat to the US, nukes or no nukes, despite whatever they were going on about. Think about it. The US can destroy the ENTIRE PLANET all by itself multiple times over. Anything Iran does that warrants a nuclear response will be one small whine before it's completely obliterated in a cloud of nuclear dust. Unless Iranians are entirely suicidal, the country isn't going to make any nuclear moves against the US.
THE NAME THAT SHALL NOT BE MENTIONED IS ISRAEL. All of this bs about Iran has to do with ISRAEL - not the US, despite the candidates bleating over, and over, and over they want to keep the US 'safe' from Iran. Well, now we know who they're auditioning in front of in terms of the job, and whose line they're toeing ... and we're not the ones keeping them dissembling past the name ISRAEL.
The other thing is that, having seen everyone involved in the 'she said he said' play it out, I have zero doubt that this was a scheme cooked up between Warren and CNN to try and knock Sanders down and boost Warren.
The debate doesn't seem to have moved anyone significantly in the RCP polling averages. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/us/2020_democr

btw I think there's been entirely too much mischaracterization of Iranians by the US for propaganda purposes. They're not the Reavers they're claimed to be.

Oh... I wasn't saying that the Iranian people specifically are suicidal, or even in a large part Muslim. I don't know what the percentage is.
I doubt very much many if any at all in the upper echelon of the Iranian Government are suicidal even if they are Muslim. I'm not worried at all about any meaningful war between the US and Iran. Not one little bit.
I'm talking specifically about Muslim robots that have been brainwashed to carry out acts in the name of Allah. Those people do exist, and to this day, not many in the overall Muslim community have come out to strongly denounce this behavior. They need to do that, and let it be known that violent extremism is intolerable behavior. Until they do this, I am among many who find the entire Muslim religion to be an abomination and a plague on this world.

Sorry for the brevity.
I meant the kids who are senior Campaign workers at the state levels. They go on about how great places Gulags were to hang out, why eugenics and mass genocide are effective tools along with re-education Campos, and how they will burn down American cities if Trump is re-elected.

I found that 2 people made some untoward statements. Note that they weren't speaking for the Sanders' campaign, they were expressing their personal povs. And for all I know, they were baited into saying these things, and/ or their statements were highly edited.
I can't imagine how MANY people are either working or volunteering for the campaign. What do you think? 2,000? 5,000? 10,000?
Basically, I find the personal statements of 2 people in the campaign to be trivial in the extreme.
Speaking of extreme statements:
Quote:
Alt-lite solo media man Mike Cernovich—who has said “diversity is code for white genocide” and “I like choking a woman until her eyes almost go lifeless”—has demonstrated access to the White House through his scoops on personnel matters and Trump’s strike on Syria last April. Both Donald Trump Jr. and Kellyanne Conway have publicly praised Cernovich, with the president’s son saying he deserves “a Pulitzer.”

The senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller promoted racist fears of demographic replacement of white people by non-whites, disseminated conspiracy theories positing a United Nations-inspired plan to colonize America, and implied a Mark Zuckerberg-sponsored bipartisan organization was promoting illegal voting, according to emails provided exclusively to the Guardian.
Like other emails revealed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) this week, the messages were sent in an effort to shape Breitbart News coverage with conspiratorial, white nationalist-influenced ideas during the Trump campaign.

They are most often in charge of finding, training, and scheduling volunteers or paid canvass workers. Organizers can be in charge of a small team of volunteers, or they may oversee the workers within a region or entire state." I dunno. What IS his area of responsibility? A small group of volunteers?
And I repeat - Trump's supporters, and staff, have made just as many radical statements on the opposite side.

Yanno, the support for Bernie is just another indication of how fed up a lot of people are with the establishment politics of both the Repubs AND the Dems.
Because of the surging protest vote we might actually have two populists running for President this November: Trump, and Bernie. Bernie would Trump a run for his money! But if the Dems try to shoehorn in Hillary (again!) - or anyone else seen as "establishment" - I think they'll go down in flames.

With Senator Bernie Sanders surging in the polls, DNC chair Tom Perez has put forward a cartoonishly neoliberal cast of foreign policy hacks and corporate lobbyists to sabotage his nomination.
By Kevin Gosztola
Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez has nominated dozens of lobbyists, corporate consultants, think tank board members, and former officials linked to the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton to serve on the Democratic National Convention (DNC) nominating committee this July.
Many of Perez’s nominees are vocal opponents of Senator Bernie Sanders and spoke out against his campaign when he challenged Hillary Clinton for the nomination in 2016.
Just as it did in 2016, the DNC appears determined to sabotage a Sanders nomination, foisting a collection of neoliberal and imperialist hacks onto the convention committee to hold back a popular rebellion against the policies of endless war and corporate free trade they have personally presided over.
Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez issued a list of individuals he nominated for the 2020 Democratic National Convention committees.
Let's examine some of the individuals. I'll initially focus on the nominees for the DNC Platform Committee.
Thread. pic.twitter.com/fVm41YClJQ
— Kevin Gosztola (@kgosztola) January 25, 2020
Only a small percentage of those on the roster, such as Communications Workers of America President Larry Cohen, are even remotely aligned or sympathetic to Sanders’ progressive agenda, and many of them are 2020 superdelegates.
Though the Democratic Party reduced the influence of superdelegates after a backlash from Sanders supporters, more than 700 superdelegates will be able to vote as part of a brokered convention if the Vermont senator is not the nominee after the first ballot. They would not have to vote for Sanders, even if he won a majority of pledged delegates in their state’s caucus or primary.
Sanders could secure enough pledged delegates to win on the first ballot and still find his agenda thwarted by the standing committees. For example, members of the DNC’s Platform Committee beholden to corporate interests could vote against measures including Medicare For All or a ban on natural fracking in the agenda of policies they plan to fight for in 2020.
A close look at the list Perez issued offers a gruesome vision of morally repugnant operatives rigging the game on behalf of a desperate and increasingly discredited party elite.
Denis McDonough was nominated to chair the Platform Committee. He was Obama’s chief of staff during his second term. McDonough is senior principal for the Markle Foundation and a chair of the Rework America Task Force. In 2018, McDonough partnered with Heidi Capozzi, senior vice president of human resources at Boeing, to form the Rework America Business Network. It included 11 founding members: Aon, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), Boeing, Duke Energy, Kaiser Permanente, McKinsey & Company, Microsoft, Stanley Black & Decker, Walmart, Zurich Insurance, and 21st Century Fox. The network received support from Google.
Acting on behalf of the CIA, McDonough pushed for more redactions in the torture report summary that was ultimately released by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He was a close ally of CIA Director John BrennanNOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

The Supers Are Back: DNC Members Planning Move To Block Sanders... Again
Now, however, Politico is reporting that DNC members are again discussing changing the rules to stop Sanders. This follows the selection of Clinton allies to control the convention and a shocking level of anti-Sanders bias shown by CNN at the last debate.
Deep-stater Biden (BidenA) is the favored nominee, but he may not be the sturdiest candidate. And then there are the distinctly non-favorites. So far the DNC (and Hillary) and CNN have waged a smear campaign against Sanders. Billionaires have donated heavily to Buttigieg (BidenB). But Buttigieg may not carry them across the finish line, so the DNC appears to be throwing its weight into Bloomberg (BidenC) by changing its rules to accommodate him. In addition to pumping up corporate-and-Israel friendly BidenA/B/C, the DNC is stacking the deck against Sanders, by filling the committee with deep-staters, and looks to be crafting a plan to bring superdelegates into play who don't have to follow the votes / caucuses of their states.

Can Bernie and Tulsi Survive Hillary’s ‘Urge’ to Save the DNC?
Tom Luongo
February 1, 2020
For months now I’ve been convinced that Hillary Clinton will be entering the fray that is the Democratic Party primary season. The affair to date has been a nothing short of high comedy.
Recent events have me more convinced than ever that she will be returning, like some zombie whose head we forgot to cut off, to haunt voters one more time this fall.
After the beginning of an obvious (and planned) PR campaign last week with the release of a big campaign ad documentary on Netflix and a big splash in the Hollywood Reporter Hillary finally stopped being coy. And she announced this week that she now ‘has the urge’ to run again against Donald Trump.
Save us, please, from Hillary’s urges…. Shudder.
And she did so making sure that everyone knew what she thought of the real front-runner for the nomination, Bernie Sanders.
As various anointed ones have dropped out of the race – Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Robert O’Rourke – others have faltered despite huge ad spends while the media and pollsters do their level best to convince us all that Joe Biden’s a serious candidate to take on Donald Trump this fall.
In fact, the only reason Biden is still in the race is to make the impeachment theater going on right now seem relevant and cogent. But, like Biden himself, it is neither.
Then again neither is Hillary, but never underestimate this woman’s narcissistic solipsism.
If you look back on the race to date it’s clear that most of the people running are there to try and distract voters away from the two candidates that resonate most with voters, Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard.
Yes, Gabbard is polling low but if you look at poll numbers versus money spent and/or raised to this point, she’s clearly got cache and the ability to build a real following. And as the field shrinks those distractions become irrelevant. Her poll numbers are rising the more the field winnows.
Neither of them is acceptable in any way to the DNC. They are outsiders within their party. I’m no fan of Bernie Sanders. In fact, I think he’s a terrible candidate — because, you know, commie! — but that’s not the point of this article.
Bernie is surging in the early states and panic is setting in with the DNC. And they must have a plan to stop him from running away with the nomination otherwise we could have two outsiders headlining this fall’s reality show.
And that plan starts with the impeachment and potential removal of Donald Trump.
The impeachment is a distraction for Trump but it is a real problem for the Senators running for the Democratic nomination. They have to spend all day listening to Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler lie while they could be out campaigning and raising money.
This hurts Bernie the most because Bernie is the one who will get zero help from the DNC’s big donors. None of them are behind him and with good reason. He’s hostile to most of them (and most of us as well, but that’s a different article).
Of the people running for President as Democrats the only person less acceptable to Wall St. than Elizabeth Warren is Bernie Sanders. Warren’s entire campaign has been designed to push Bernie farther left by out-lefting him at every turn. Bernie says 70% top marginal tax rate, Warren says 77%. Bernie wants debt restructuring? Warren says forgive all student loan debt.
Her job is to make Bernie as unacceptable to mainstream U.S. voters as possible. Unfortunately, that makes Bernie more and more acceptable to a lot of people voting in the Democratic primaries. And this Catch-22 is beginning to show up in the polls for Iowa and New Hampshire.
Then there’s the serious money behind Pete Buttigieg trying to create slightly gayer version of Barack Obama. Again, he’s just another distraction to suck support away from Sanders and keep the field relatively close and the odds of an uncommitted primary season high.
Because the goal is to get to a brokered convention this summer. So, the impeachment was slowed downNOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

Because the goal is to get to a brokered convention this sumNOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

Did Bernie get screwed out of the Iowa caucus?
Between the "gold standard" poll being pulled right before the Caucus, and the "app that failed" to report local precinct results, no matter WHAT results come in, nobody is going to believe them.

This is an interesting take, which basically says US politics have become so tribal, that policies, platforms, and messaging don't matter. What matters is whipping up hatred for 'the other' to drive your side out to vote.

Bitecofer’s view of the electorate is driven, in part, by a new way to think about why Americans vote the way they do. ... the concept of “negative partisanship,” the idea that voters are more motivated to defeat the other side than by any particular policy goals.
In a piece explaining his work in POLITICO Magazine, Abramowitz wrote: “Over the past few decades, American politics has become like a bitter sports rivalry, in which the parties hang together mainly out of sheer hatred of the other team, rather than a shared sense of purpose. Republicans might not love the president, but they absolutely loathe his Democratic adversaries. And it’s also true of Democrats, who might be consumed by their internal feuds over foreign policy and the proper role of government were it not for Trump.”
Bitecofer took this insight and mapped it across the country. As she sees it, it isn’t quite right to refer to a Democratic or Republican “base.” Rather, there are Democratic and Republican coalitions, the first made of people of color, college-educated whites and people in metropolitan areas; the second, mostly noncollege whites, with a smattering of religious-minded voters, financiers and people in business, largely in rural and exurban counties.
“In the polarized era, the outcome isn’t really about the candidates. What matters is what percentage of the electorate is Republican and Republican leaners, and what percentage is Democratic and Democratic leaners, and how they get activated,” she said.

If that's true, that would leave Signy's questions: what's in America's interests, what can we agree on, what can we work together on? as a lone voice in the wilderness, being whipped away by the wind.
This also seems to be the pattern in countries torn apart by war: Why We Hate. I wonder how close this mutual 'demonization of the opposition' might bring us to actual civil war.

But here we have 2 competing theses - Silver and Bitecofer - and 2 competing predictions (though 538 hasn't come out with an election prediction yet), plus there are your betting sites! which have come out with an opposite prediction to Bitecofer. So there's plenty of mental models out there to compare with the final result.

No fan of Silver either...
He got lucky years ago and is the perfect model for what Bitecofer's predictions are going to look like in future elections.
I don't like Bitecofer simply because she seems like a repugnant human being, and I didn't like the article because it was written by one or several "woke" leftists who just lap up the shit she's dishing, whether it's her predictions that Trump is going to lose in 2020 or her awful brand of third wave feminist superiority.
Professionally speaking, they're both far overrated. But I don't know anything personal about Silver. Bitecofer is just as gross on the inside as she is on the outside.

An Unsettling New Theory: There Is No Swing Voter
What if everything you think you know about politics is wrong? What if there aren’t really American swing voters—or not enough, anyway, to pick the next president? What if it doesn’t matter much who the Democratic nominee is? What if there is no such thing as “the center,” and the party in power can govern however it wants for two years, because the results of that first midterm are going to be bad regardless? What if the Democrats’ big 41-seat midterm victory in 2018 didn’t happen because candidates focused on health care and kitchen-table issues, but simply because they were running against the party in the White House? What if the outcome in 2020 is pretty much foreordained, too?
To the political scientist Rachel Bitecofer, all of that is almost certainly true, and that has made her one of the most intriguing new figures in political forecasting this year.
Bitecofer, a 42-year-old professor at Christopher Newport University in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, was little known in the extremely online, extremely male-dominated world of political forecasting until November 2018. That’s when she nailed almost to the number the nature and size of the Democrats’ win in the House, even as other forecasters went wobbly in the race’s final days. Not only that, but she put out her forecast back in July, and then stuck by it while polling shifted throughout the summer and fall.
And today her model tells her the Democrats are a near lock for the presidency in 2020, and are likely to gain House seats and have a decent shot at retaking the Senate.

The only thing you can be sure of is that either a Democrat or Republican will be the next President, but which D or R is unknowable, and in the bigger scheme of things, which party wins is what's important. Trump is a run-of-the-mill Republican, except for mental health problems, and V.P. The reason Trump won in 2016 was not, she says, because of a bunch of disaffected blue-collar former Democrats in the Midwest; it is because a combination of Jill Stein, Gary Johnson and Evan McMullin pulled away more than 6 percent of voters in a state like Michigan. These were anti-Hillary voters, yes—but they were anti-Trump voters especially, and they are likely to come to the Democratic fold this time around if they’re given a reason.
Trump appears to understand Bitecofer’s theories as well as anyone in politics. He leans into the divisions and negative partisanship. In 2018, Trump turned the midterms into a referendum on him, warning that Democrats would bring crime and chaos into their neighborhoods if they won. There was a turnout surge among Trump voters in some places, but it wasn’t enough to offset the Democratic gains.
Bitecofer already sees the Trump playbook coming together for 2020: warning of a demographic takeover by nonwhites in order to boost turnout among noncollege white voters, and trying to sow chaos in the Democratic ranks so that supporters of a losing primary candidate either stay home or support a third-party candidate.

I win when a Republican wins, but I vote for Democrats because of what Nixon did during the Vietnam War and all the Republican voters who supported that war. I should have listened to Noam Chomsky, but I was a redneck, not a hippie, so I volunteered. Once there, I discovered that Republicans had totally lost track of reality, even when it was shooting at them. Republican voters are always off the rails, which is why I can depend on them to give me money.

Free fries and milkshakes! I could use my skills on Trump, but I won't. (Over feeding him or shooting him) I will let the people decide what happens to him. No amount of talking in Vietnam ever changed a Republican's mind about how ridiculous the military strategy was. No amount of political advertising will change a Republican's mind about how ridiculous Trump is.

The whole purpose of that movie is icky as is Trump's purpose. Read about Trump's purpose in "Noam Chomsky Calls Trump and Republican Allies "Criminally Insane"" which is much like Joker.

Well, I watched the debate last night. The NYTimes said that Butting was a 'winner' but I thought he came across as evasive. There were a couple of questions he was challenged on after he gave non-responsive talking points, and he stumbled in obviously clumsy circles to evade the challenge. It was pretty plain to me. BUT tptb want him to be BidenB, because 'anybody but Sanders', so GO MAYOR PETE is their assessment. Sanders did well, answered the questions and made his points. Warren did OK, answered the questions, made her points, but she got not much air time. Biden tried to come across as 'not sleepy Joe' and came across as a testy old man. He actually did make more points than normal. Klobuchar and Steyer were also in good form. Yang was ... Yang. He got not much airtime, but his mono-argument of give very American $1000 a month doesn't take much airtime.
Steyer is the only one who changed his argument, to 'we need to beat Trump on the economy'.
If you've followed any of the previous debates, you pretty much know what their positions are and how they come across as people. I don't think the ground shifted all that much except for perhaps Klobuchar, who got a lot more airtime and used it well. It might move the needle on a few percent.

I didn't see it, but I heard that Klobuchar was the only one up there who voiced any opposition to Socialism.

That's kind of been her theme all along, especially regarding healthcare. Since I've been following the debates, it didn't stand out for me as new or different from her previous debates. But she did highlight it last night.

Quote:I don't recall in your state, but in WI there is a formula for state funding of smaller Parties, like campaign funding based uopon votes in the prior election. So you can vote for the most valid candidate in your smaller elections, but in the state-wides where your vote will be meaningless, you can vote for the favorite smaller Party, regardless of the seat or the candidate (you know they won't win) - because you vote actually will make a difference for the funding of that smaller party. Because that helps balance the discussion. And if any state needs another viable party, it is CA.

“[Bill and Hillary Clinton] set up a machine that was really a juggernaut with all this corporate money they brought in through the Democratic Leadership Committee,” says Blumenthal. “It was a very different structure than we'd seen with previous democratic candidates who relied heavily on unions and the Civil Rights Coalition.
“And that machine never went away,” the journalist goes on. “It kept growing kind of like this amoeba that began to engulf the party and politics itself. So that when Bill Clinton was out of power, the machine was passed to Hillary Clinton, and the machine followed her into the Senate. And the machine grew into the Clinton Global Initiative.”
The two journalists discuss what some of the main reasons Sanders is facing so much resistance within the Democratic Party, in addition to his views on Palestine. Blumenthal believes there will be a repeat of what happened in 1972 when George McGovern ran for president.
“I think that if Bernie Sanders gets the nomination, there will be an effort to ‘McGovern’ him,” he posits. “[The Democratic Party will] hope that Bernie Sanders gets destroyed by Donald Trump, and then wag their fingers at the left for the next 20 years until they get another Bill Clinton.
“I think that they don't know how to stop him at this point,” Blumenthal continues, “but they're willing to let him be the nominee and go down to Donald Trump, because Bernie Sanders threatens their interests, and the movement behind him particularly, more than Donald Trump does.”

I'm posting this here because - this writer has a way with words that hits me in the funnybone!
But by far the most bombastic display of unbridled Sanders-Commie-Kill-Swarm-Panic was MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, who totally lost it after the last debate and started sputtering about “socialists” staging public mass-executions in Central Park. Matthews is apparently firmly convinced that Sanders, if he wins the election, plans to dress up like Fidel Castro, march Matthews and his cronies out onto the Great Lawn, and go full-bore Daenerys Targaryen on them. He sat there, trembling, on national television, eyes afire with paranoia, jabbering about the godless “Reds” like a scene from Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove that got cut because it was too over-the-top.
Seriously, though, I doubt he has much to worry about. Regardless of who wins the election this year, the supranational corporatocracy that essentially owns the U.S. government is not about to let Bernie Sanders implement the same basic social programs that most capitalist countries throughout world have provided to their people for decades. Jesus, just imagine the freedomless horror if Americans could go to university, and, you know, maybe raise a child or two, without spending the rest of their lives in debt! Think of the suffering that would inflict on the banks, and insurance companies, and military contractors, not to mention the pharmaceutical industry. God help America, should it go down that road! The next thing you know there’d be high-speed trains, subsidized art, and un-chlorinated chicken … there’s no telling where the nightmare would end.
Look, I don’t normally get invested in the quadrennial Simulation of Democracy, but I’m kind of pulling for Bernie this time. I don’t believe he has a chance, but if he somehow managed to outfox the Democrats and win the nomination this summer, it would be fun to watch as the corporate media and the rest of the neoliberal Resistance react to a Sanders vs. Trump election.
Not that either Sanders or Trump, the men themselves, are a threat to the empire (as we have witnessed over the course of the last three years). But we’re in the middle of a War on Populism, which the global corporatocracy needs to win if it is going to continue to relentlessly destabilize, privatize, and restructure everything, as it has been doing since the end of the Cold War. Sanders and Trump are just symbols, of course, lightning rods for “populist” anger … but they are symbols the empire needs to destroy in order to reestablish “normality.”
