Impeachment is an especially essential remedy for conduct that corrupts elections. The primary check on presidents is political: if a president behaves poorly, voters can punish him or his party at the polls. A president who corrupts the system of elections seeks to place himself beyond the reach of this political check. At the Constitutional Convention, George Mason described impeachable offenses as “attempts to subvert the constitution.” Corrupting elections subverts the process by which the Constitution makes the president democratically accountable. Put simply, if a President cheats in his effort at re-election, trusting the democratic process to serve as a check through that election is no remedy at all. That is what impeachment is for.
Moreover, the Founders were keenly concerned with the possibility of corruption in the president’s relationships with foreign governments. That is why they prohibited the president from accepting anything of value from foreign governments without Congress’s consent. The same concern drove their thinking on impeachment. James Madison noted that Congress must be able to remove the president between elections lest there be no remedy if a president betrayed the public trust in dealings with foreign powers.

The problem is, you bozos were talking about impeachment the day after the election in 2016. There's no less than a dozen different reasons, including Russian prostitutes pissing on the man.
Go ahead and give these people lofty titles like "law scholars", but they're just lawyers. Lawyers are just people. Lawyers tend to be the worst people. And people are always going to be biased.
Please... Like I have said for a very long time, please impeach.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

The only reason why Pelosi is digging up the RUSSIA!RUSSIA! corpse is because there's no "there" there with the Ukraine impeachment. All of Schiff's witnesses (save one) were relaying second-hand or third-hand gossip, and the only witness who spoke to Trump directly (Sondland) testified that in a phone call with Trump ...
Quote:
“What do you want from Ukraine? I keep hearing all of these different ideas and theories and this and that, what do you want? And it was a very short, abrupt conversation. He was not in a good mood. And he just said, I want nothing. I want nothing, I want no quid pro quo. Tell Zelensky to do the right thing.”
The Democrats' star witness, the gossip-blower who started this all (reportedly Eric Ciamarella) didn't even testify.
Reportedly, Adam Schiff's impeachment report reads like a Hollywood script, with a lot of suppositions ("Trump, behaving like a Mafioso gangster ..."), mind-reading, and name-calling (hmmm, sounds a lot like people here) but contains no actual ... what is that word again? Oh yeah ... evidence. Adam Schiff's draft report was released Dec 3 ... 4 days ago.
In that 500 pages, if there was a "bombshell" in it, we would be hearing about it. Not RUSSIA!

ETA: But House Dems must pressuring Pelosi, so she decided to go with impeachment rather than censure. I think this is a losing strategy, and I think she knows it but doesn't have any choice.

Quote:Despite all lack of first hand evidence that Trump 'wanted' something from Zelensky (it was all gossip that people adopted as a religion, and that they testified to - in the religious sense); and despite ignoring ALL of Zelensky's statements to the contrary; and despite the democrats pointing in many directions like a weather vane (was it quid pro quo? bribery? extortion? abuse of power? something else? yanno, like "and east, west, south, and north somewhat") ... thanks to 9/11 I will never again underestimate the power of American gullibility, especially when they've been ENDLESSLY propagandized that there's an 'enemy'.

IN CASE ANYONE HAS ANY DOUBT - THIS IS WHAT TRUMP'S IMPEACHMENT IS ALL ABOUT:

Salon is the definition of gross.
I notice that our friends here in the RWED rarely if ever post any links by them. I think even they can recognize just how trashy it is.
Fuck Salon. That dude will be out of a job soon enough. I'll help him get a real job working overnights with me for minimum wage when that happens, and show him what it means to actually work for a living.

Salon is actually better than the democratic establishment, whose performance after the last democratic debate was beyond hyper-neoliberal and an embarrassment. Chris Matthews lit into Sanders in a supposed interview with Klobuchar, saying that when it came to 'Bernie' (on a first-name basis with the candidate, are we, Chris?), Sanders couldn't even agree with 'the rest of' the democrats that they needed to 'get rid of Trump'; but that instead for 'Bernie' 'this is all about my big social democratic revolution I wanna start'. Steve Schmidt commentary was that Gabbard was 'spectacularly awful' and 'dishonest', and Matthews gave him a forum to speak at length to Gabbard, where he repeated the 'dishonest' diatribe, as well as accusing her that her positions were 'extreme', then raising the talking point about talking with Assad. And Chris Matthews kept interrupting her and hectoring her to declare Assad a war criminal, when she kept TRYING to make the point that there are international legal processes to determine that.
If you want to see what the democratic party is for, just watch who they attack. Pro big-business? Pro-war? Check. And Check.
Anyway, Salon is a place where I go to see what the neoliberals think out loud.
But you can bet that that's what the neo-liberals here are thinking. Elections aren't good enough for them.

I think we have different classifications for what makes a Neo-Liberal.
Biden and Pelosi are Neo-Liberals, both cut from the same cloth as the Bushes and the Clintons and Obama.
I wouldn't classify anybody who posts here in the RWED as a Neo-Liberal. They're Progressives (Regressives). They're racists and sexists (who pretend that they aren't the racists and sexists here) that put identity politics and outrage above anything else and they scream and cry when they don't get their way.
They're far more AOC in here than they are Pelosi.
This impeachment hearing is the culmination of a three year long wet dream that they've never woken up from since Trump was elected. How "anti-climactic" that it won't amount to anything, hopefully embedding the fact that we're all just impotent pawns of a larger power... maybe they'll grow up and focus on improving their own lives instead of living them vicariously through idiot Democrat politicians who don't give a shit about them.

Oh... and a friendly little tip to our "Progressives" in here...
Warren isn't one.
She was a registered Republican and voted Republican until 1996.
Until three years ago she was a hard core Neo-Liberal. She still is. She just pretends to be the Female Bernie now.
Don't believe me. Google it.
You're welcome.

The people here are really pro-war, especially if it's regime change or the enemy de jour. After all, they supported Hillary in everything she did (Syria, Ukraine, Libya, and Honduras) - and could not bear to admit even the littlest negative thing about her. And they have no problems with big business. They have no problems with 'free trade' agreements. They think NATIONALISM (ie support of one's country first) is a dirty word. They have no problems with government spying on its citizens. Or as their stated opinion on the US PATRIOT Act goes - if you haven't done anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about. THEY REALLY DON'T SUPPORT DEMOCRACY if it doesn't go their way - just like they didn't support the democratic vote in Syria, Ukraine, Honduras, and Venezuela.
Neo-liberals and neo-conservatives might disagree on gay marriage and gendered bathrooms. But when it comes to militarism, 'interventionism' (ie more war), surveilling Americans, and greasing the way for big business, they're on the same page.
I can't distinguish them from Hillary, Obama, dubya, or Bill.
BTW, I don't think the people HERE are for AOC, except if she's a useful tool to use against anything that has to do with Trump. And when it comes to the current crop of democratic candidates, the democratic neo-liberal machine is definitely NOT for Sanders or Gabbard.
