So, yes, a large earthquake. Fortunately for us very far away from here. (Not so fortunate for the ppl near Ridgecrest.)
What most people don't realize, and what I keep forgetting, is that earthquakes don't happen like on TV. They don't start with a bang, they usually start with Is something ...? followed byDo you feel that? We had a whole conversation while I figured out that hubby was right and indeed we were having a quake and I went down the hall to check on dear daughter (and noticed that the clothes in her closet were swinging on the rack) and went back to the kitchen. During most of that time the swaying slowly got harder and harder. Since the biggest earthquakes are also the longest, an earthquake could potentially "ramp up" for a long time into something eventually catastrophic. And it's not like it just quits, either. The earth still moves many times after the main shock.

Just a couple of thoughts: Looking at the WORLD map, there are (of course) dozens of plate boundaries, but the only real active one seems to be the Pacific plate. I know that the motion is different at different parts of the boundary, leading to strike-slip and thrust faults but my brain just kind of cmompresses the whole thing into a general picture that the Pacific plate is, overall, ROTATING counterclockwise.
There was a discussion late last year IIRC about how the "big" earthquakes (>7) tend to occur in 32-year cycles. Last year was the 32nd year. I remember thinking that we might have snuck past "the big one" again! Of course, maybe there's some wobble in that timing.
It's a good reminder that we need to be prepared. I've been telling hubby about my efforts to collect up enough supplies, that the most probable disaster that's going to befall us isn't catastrophic societal collapse but earthquake (well, maybe earthquake followed by societal collapse!)
I lived through numerous quakes in LA & Orange Counties in the 80's, they were ramping up a bit in 1987. I only knew of 2 at the time they were happening, the rest were just news reports. First one I knew about I was sitting in my car in traffic, on a hot day, and it had a soft suspension. I noticed the traffic light was swaying back and forth, since I was waiting for the light to change. It wasn't wind, and I finally figured out it was a quake, but I didn't feel it. The second one was in a late morning, I think a Sunday, and I was on the verge of waking. So I wondered who it was that was giving me an orgasm - because that is what it feels like, you're not fully physically tethered to the earth, weightlessness, familiar disorientation. I was alone, and it wasn't an orgasm, just had the same corrollary sensation. That was when I finally understood "I felt the Earth move" - before that I thought it was just a euphemism for falling in Love, but it was really the same sensation as orgasm.

Yes, Cascadia. That is the name of the coastal mountains.
It will. And up here with being so close to the water there will be Tsunamis which means water damage as well as what the earthquake will cause.

Tore out the back steps leading up to the porch that were falling apart. It was obvious water damage, but I assumed the ants had destroyed it as well. I wasn't disappointed. Now I know where half of the sand under the patio pavers went. It was a goddamned 3D ant farm under there. I've got no less than 15 minutes of animal planet worthy video footage to prove it (if you take the audio out because of all the swearing 
)
I flattened out the sand until my garbage cans are empty again, then I put a truckload of Triazacide on it and dumped a full gallon of spray poison on top of that.
My new stairs into the back porch are a patio paver and a old plastic milk carton thing.
I finally bit the bullet and did something I was dreading because I needed the piece of mind. I went down into the crawl space and checked out the wood foundation above the brick foundation from front to back between every joist and it all looks good. :)
I freaked myself out though and nearly had a heart attack with it at first. Before I figured out how to get a flashlight with one hand to show what was going on behind the pipes while pushing away insulation with the other hand, it hadn't occured to me the first section I checked out was where the drain pipe from the sump pump went out. I felt back there, sight unseen, and felt a LOT of wood damage and immediately imagined the foundation of my house looked like what my porch looks like. SHIT!!!!!
That wasn't the case though. Everything else checked out fine. When I went back, I realized that part was where the drain went out and the damage is only between those two sections of joist. I think "Uncle Bob" put the hole there for the pipe and just did a super sloppy job of it.
Seriously... Fuck Uncle Bob and his shoddy craftsmanship.
I did notice in spots around the rest of the foundation there was some damaged wood pieces and shavings that I was pulling out with a ton of dust. This had me worried at first, but the wood itself all looks dry and healthy. I strongly believe this is just debris from the original construction that they never bothered to clean up and it had just lie there undisturbed for the last 60 years before I went prodding around today.
I still have no idea what's going on with my roof, but seeing what I've been able to see both underneath the house and by checking out the facia itself while cleaning up debris from the roof, I have no reason to suspect it's ant damage. It might be the abnormal settling of the porch pulling away at the house as it's sinking.
I need to double my efforts to get everything clean and ready for a real estate agent and a "cash for homes" place to check it out and tell me what they think.
Maybe at that point, I'll at least tear down the porch since I can't afford to rebuild it or even stabilize it in any meaningful way that wouldn't potentially leave me open to legal action after selling the thing. Otherwise my option is to try selling it with everything exposed, as-is. I think it would be very foolish for me to try to half ass this and risk that somebody falls through the floor 5 years after I knowingly sell it in the state that it's in.
I'll have to see what a real estate agent says, but I imagine that even without doing any meaningful landscaping after the fact that I'd be adding $15 to $30 thousand bucks to the asking price if the porch was removed, the hole was filled in and that side of the house was re-sided before I sold it. Sure, it would diminish the value of the home to remove that three season room altogether if it was rock solid, but as-is, I think it's just a huge liability that would scare most buyers off and it's just killing the potential sale price.
It would open up my back yard to the world by removing it, and it would make the house look quite a bit smaller from the street (about 20 feet of house frontage would be removed since the shed is also attached at the end), but I could always
