Cohen said a bunch of things that, if true, implicate Trump in a number of impeachable (and imprisonable) crimes.
On top of that, Matt Gaetz is going in front of the Florida bar for threatening him.
Two for the good guys!

I listened to parts of his testimony, which I would classify as an emotional performance designed to wind up Democrats but without any LEGAL implications. Being called a "racist" is not a provable crime. Even the people who called in the NPR show "1A" said it was a bunch of grandstanding.
So, do you have any predictions?

Also, NPR is a bunch of center-right bullshit that doesn't have the guts to call Trump what he is. They used to be honest.

Cohen described a regular pattern of Trump-directed financial deception, that including inflating his assets to get loans and make the Forbes rich list, and deflating them to avoid paying taxes. “There was nothing that happened at the Trump Organization that did not go through Mr. Trump with his approval and his signoff,” Cohen said.
Trump ran the business, “much like a mobster would do,” Cohen said at one point. “He doesn’t give you questions, he doesn’t give you orders,” Cohen said. “He speaks in a code, and I understand the code because I’ve been around him for a decade.”
Everyone’s “job at the Trump Organization was to protect Mr. Trump,” Cohen said later.

He also implied that Trump is dangerous. “When Mr. Trump turned around in the campaign and said, ‘I can shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it,’ he’s not joking, he’s telling you the truth,” Cohen said. “You don’t know him like I do,” he said.

Huh.

Months ago I said that this whole RUSSIA!RUSSIA!RUSSIA! hysteria was a giant hoax. That when it looked like Mueller wouldn't find anything (as the Senate Intelligence Committeee didn't find anything) that the narrative would turn on a dime to something else, and that you ... despite having just been played into a state of overwhelming fear that Trump was just a "Putin puppet" who only won the election by conspiring with the Kremlin because they had some "golden showers" videos ... would instantaneously forget your overwhelming fear, and like obedient little goldfish-brained bots would turn your acute paranioa on a dime, as if this whole RUSSIA!RUSSIA!RUSSIA! narrative never existed, and you would go haring and hounding after another media circus.

Cohen shot down some of the rumors going around. He said he has no knowledge of Trump having a love child or paying for an abortion, and Trump would “never” physically harm Melania. But the sum total of his testimony was devastating; decades from now, historians will continue to analyze it.
On his first day testifying to the Senate Watergate committee back in June 1973, John Dean said: “To one who was in the White House and became somewhat familiar with its interworkings, the Watergate matter was an inevitable outgrowth of a climate” in which expediency trumped law.
It was in part Watergate that drew me toward journalism, and in 35 years reporting for the New York Times, I’ve known and covered many American presidents and foreign leaders. The American leaders sometimes tried to bamboozle or spin us reporters, but they were tethered to truth and to American values and were fundamentally different from some banana republic leaders who were simply gangsters.
Until now.
I hope Democrats aren’t gleeful. This is a sad moment in American history, for Nixon walks again. Squared.

The ranking GOP member of the House Oversight Committee, Jim Jordan, began Wednesday’s excoriation of convicted liar Michael Cohen by castigating the Democratic chair, Elijah Cummings, for scheduling this as the very first hearing of his chairmanship.
Hours later, we learn that this was the third, not the first, hearing of Cummings chairmanship, preceded by hearings on the opioid crisis and on a bill that deals with corruption and voting rights.
In short: Jordan opened the Republicans’ day-long castigation of a liar — with a lie.
Lie is a strong word and only pertains (in my view) when it is knowing. If Jordan had not known his committee had held these two other important hearings, it would be merely a misstatement, not a lie. But he was at those hearings — watch him here and here. And because he had participated in them just weeks earlier — not years or decades — it is hard to accept he could have forgotten about them.
Think about it: Jordan well knew he’d be the opening salvo for the Republicans in this hearing. He wasn’t ambushed by some reporter in the hall. These were the very first words he would speak, carefully chosen — and they were a lie.
Third is not first.
The irony that the ranking member would lead off a hearing castigating lies with a lie strikes me as stark.
That he would do so in single-minded defense of a president who has told thousands of lies — “a dangerous con man,” to quote Marco Rubio, “a pathological liar,” to quote Ted Cruz — makes it worse.
Is it really more likely that the lifelong Republicans who led the FBI (Mueller, Comey, and McCabe) or the New York Times and the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal — are the dishonest ones?

Trump’s aborted nuclear summit in Vietnam this week was a step in the right direction, but the US president is the wrong man to strike a meaningful deal.
Trump has “made a strong and valiant effort, but he’s not the right person to do this, obviously,” Joel Wit, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, a security policy think tank, told an audience at New York City’s Korea Society. “He’s not steady, he’s quirky, one day he wakes up and thinks one thing, the next day he wakes up and thinks another thing. One minute he can seem like he loves Kim Jong Un, the next minute he walks out of the summit. This is who he is.”
This is not the kind of behavior that results in successful nuclear diplomacy.
Wit brings a unique perspective to the global post-summit analysis. A former US State Department official, Wit has negotiated nuclear arms agreements with both the Soviet Union and North Korea.
https://qz.com/1563612/
The previous agreement with North Korea was that it would shut down reactors that make both electricity and plutonium for bombs if the US would provide electricity. The Republicans in Congress got erratic about paying for the electricity -- sometimes there would be money in the budget for fuel oil delivered to N Korea for generating electricity and sometimes there was no money. N Korea got upset at having their lights turned off by the US and turned back on their electric generating nuclear reactors, which also happen to make plutonium.

Quote:6ixStringJack, the Republicans could have shut down N Korea’s plutonium reactors at a cost of a few $million per year in fuel oil for electricity. But instead, the Republicans in Congress have already wasted several $billion per year since 2004 to confront the threat of nuclear weapons in N Korea, weapons that would not even exist if the reactors had remained shut down. And the cost to confront N Korea’s new H-bombs will keeping going up and up forever and ever. Trump added a "$160 billion boost in defense spending over two years, reversing years of decline". He increased the defense budget because he expected to fail in negotiating with Kim.

Trump had a backup plan – the Kim Killer bomb. This didn’t come for free: "A new low-yield nuclear warhead, created at the behest of the Trump administration, has officially entered production. The first production unit of the W76-2 warhead is underway at the Pantax Plant in Texas, according to a statement from the National Nuclear Security Agency."
www.defensenews.com/smr/nuclear-arsenal/2019/01/28/trumps-new-nuclear-
weapon-has-entered-production/
The Kim Killer bomb guaranteed that Kim will not give up N Korea’s nukes, which are the only things keeping Kim from being nuked by Trump. I guess Trump didn’t actually think clearly about that before spending the money to make the W76-2 bomb.
It costs money to threaten other countries: "9 times Trump or his top officials threatened to attack or nuke other countries in 2018."
www.businessinsider.com/trump-threatened-military-force-2018-12
Obama threatened to nuke other countries zero times in 8 years.

I don't believe in a million years that all they need is a few million dollars a year in fuel.

The theory of the deal was that, with the plant shuttered and the plutonium under the close watch of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), North Korea would not be able to produce a bomb. There were also vague references in the text to improving relations and commerce.
The deal was hugely controversial in Congress.
Today's price is $430 per metric tonne of fuel oil in Houston. That's $215 million per year for 500,000 tonnes to keep North Korea from building nukes.
https://shipandbunker.com/prices
South Korea was building a nuclear reactor for North Korea. Once it was finished, the US could stop paying for fuel oil. Since Congress would not pay for half of the building costs, the South Koreans stopped building it after pouring the foundation and fabricating the pressure vessel. South Korea is currently involved in the building of four nuclear reactors in the UAE, under a $20 billion contract. I'd guess that the US share of the cost for a reactor in North Korea won't be more than $10 billion.
www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/country-profiles/countries-o
-s/south-korea.aspx
I was trying to think of a reason why Japan or South Korea didn't pay when the Republicans refused to pay. It is because North Korea would be dropping their nukes on Washington DC. If the Republicans in Congress don't care enough to pay to save their own lives, why should Japan pay to protect the Republicans from being nuked?
