Having watched the longer video which was taken from a where the black Israelites (or whatever they call themselves) were standing, I come away with a different interpretation.

From the video, there was a good 30 feet - maybe more- between them and the students who were basically doing nothing. NOTHING HAPPENED until Phillip decided to interject himself into the scene.

If he wanted to defuse the situation - which needed no defusing, as far as I can tell - why didn't he approach the black agitators, who were being assholes, instead of the students (who were waiting for their bus)?

Why did he think that wading into their group, banging a drum and glaring at them would improve the situation? Even if he was praying for peace, this man is a Vietnam vet, he's been out of the USA for god's sake, didn't he think that there might be a cultural barrier that needed a bit of explanation?

The first video, where the newscaster talked about the mob of "angry students" and the video quickly pans around the students ... pay attention to them: Do they look "angry" to you?? They don't to me.

Did you see the look on his face? It didn't look at all meditative, it looked hostile, belligerant, angry. And it didn't look like he was trying to "get" anywhere, except right in some kid's face.

Maybe it was an accidental expression (like "bitchy resting face"), maybe I'm misreading the body language, but it looked like deliberate provocation to me,

Now I don't blame the kid for being pissed either. Bunch of black men across the way were hurling insults at a bunch of white kids first, before the Indian guy comes over to try to break it up. Then he's got somebody banging a drum in his face and doesn't know why. This wasn't racist hatred in his eyes. He was full of adrenaline and resisting the the dueling urges of fight and flight at the same time.

The "rally" the kids were attending puts the MAGA hats in context too. I still wouldn't be dressing up my kids off to school like people put bumper stickers on their cars. This whole shit show is a prime example why.

Given the truth of the actual situation at hand, Sigs was probably the most level headed of anybody here. Even I said that the kid in the video should get psychiatric help without knowing all of the facts.

Nothing she said here certainly was as bad as ReaverFan's miscalculations and saying that he wanted to punch this kid in the face in the OP. Nothing she said here certainly was as far from the truth as the thread title claiming that the man who willingly walked across the street into the middle of all the kids with that very intent was "mobbed".

You should probably view this entire incident as a learning experience instead of doubling down.
