Yes, I've seen these so-called "Hebrew Israelites" in my town as well, spouting their hatred - they are assholes - and are largely ignored. Their
modus operandi is to try and incite and provoke.
If that one kid was looking to diffuse the situation, then why did he confront the native American man? Shouldn't he be trying to calm his fellow students?
He clearly was standing almost nose to nose with the elder man. That "look" on
his face said it all. That was not the look of a person trying to diffuse a
situation.
In an interview, the elder native American, was looking to deflect the chanting mob, obviously provoked by the asshole Israelites. The adults should have diffuse the situation instead of giving permission to chant. Obviously
they did not diffuse anything, but they did manage to escalate.

That "look" on his face said it all. That was not the look of a person trying to diffuse a situation.
My interpretation at this point is that this was a misunderstanding. The kids didn't understand that the Native (apparently) wanted to walk thru, and the Native didn't understand that he wasn't being "confronted". The best response? If someone had asked for understanding ... "Excuse me, are you angry with me?" the whole situation could have been diffused.
I see precious little of that, here or anywhere. People are way too anxious.
It doesn't help that SOME people are also way too anxious to bully, and nobody seems to want to listen.

Exactly. Outrage and cooling things down works both ways Siggy. That kid and his fellow classmates (plus the adult that gave them permission to "chant")
worked it all wrong. Walk away and ignore, like most level-headed people do.

They are there to instigate. Best case scenario, walk away. Everyone else does. But no, the "adult" says "sure confront the assholes" and stand inches away from a man and smirk in a such a manner that instills "goodness and

And before you go off half cocked...I did seek out more info as to why this
student decided to stand there smirking at the native American man. I saw a
report that did describe the instigating "assholes" - the black militant group of men. I also saw an interview with the older gentleman who said he was trying to diffuse the situation with his drumming and chanting.
The way I look at it, one man chanting and drumming for peace is truly
different from 200 boys chanting, screaming and taking off their shirt.
Whoever that adult was that gave permission for those boys to chant must
be questioned. Methinks there's more to it than the reports would suggest.
The truth lies somewhere in between, but no one knows the whole truth except those that were there.
My "reaction" or "outrage" was due solely to the "smirk" on that one kid's
face. I have seen that smirk countless of times in my life, from all manner of people - young and old (mostly young assholes) and all colors. I know what kind of "look" that is. Been there, done that. That is NOT the look of a peacemaker - piece of shit, maybe - but not peacemaker.
So again, you "spoke" without knowing the facts.

Why do we expect greater understanding from a kid than from a mature adult with a lot of experience under his belt? Does the kid deserve to have his life threatened?

I think you're all seriously over-reacting. Until I see something else, this was a misunderstanding. It wasn't a "terrible" misunderstanding because nobody got hurt. It could have been a learning moment for everyone.
But this oversized outrage, to the point of threats, has TURNED a small misunderstanding into a giant clusterfuck. Maybe we should ALL turn this into a learning moment.

I think the lesson to be learned here is don't to stupid shit in public. Every asshole in the country has a recording device and an internet connection these days.

I'd like to see the entire event now, since we've seen the one-sidedness and the spin on it. But unless that old man called the kid's mom a whore off camera, that kid has some issues.
