Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Mob Native Elder at Indigenous Peoples March

They were Catholic high school students who came to Washington on a field trip to rally at the March for Life.

He was a Native American veteran of the Vietnam War who was there to raise awareness at the Indigenous Peoples March.

They intersected on Friday in an unsettling encounter outside the Lincoln Memorial — a throng of cheering and jeering high school boys, predominantly white and wearing “Make America Great Again” gear, surrounding a Native American elder.

The episode was being investigated and the students could face punishment, up to and including expulsion, their school said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

In video footage that was shared widely on social media, one boy, wearing the red hat that has become a signature of President Trump, stood directly in front of the elder, who stared impassively ahead while playing a ceremonial drum.

Some boys in the group wore clothing associated with Covington Catholic High School, an all-male college preparatory school in Park Hills, Ky., near Cincinnati.

The school had advertised that students would attend this year’s March for Life Rally, which took place in Washington on Friday. In a letter to parents, the trip was described as an opportunity for students to live out their faith and demonstrate in support of all life “born and unborn.”

In a statement, the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School condemned the behavior by the students and extended their “deepest apologies” to the elder, as well as to Native Americans in general.

“This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person,” the statement said.

Well that's all fine and good, but who taught these little shits that such racism was OK in the first place?

The article said that the school if you can call it that has lost its FB page and Twitter account. Good start.

These boys need to be taught a hard lesson and expulsion is a start then I think someone needs to talk to their parents as well as the school. It starts at home but I think the school also has something to do with it.

Personally, I think anybody going around wearing a MAGA hat outside of a Trump rally in 2018 or 2019 is probably a huge asshole that is looking for a fight. It's bad enough when you see political bumper stickers on cars, but at least you kind of have an excuse there since that shit is hard to take off.

When you wear a MAGA hat in public now, you woke up and went out the door intending to make a statement. When you dress your kids in one, knowing that it's likely to start a fight, you're 10 times the asshole.

Yeah. These kids should be punished and made an example of. I don't think the internet will disappoint in that regard.

I don't think expulsion is the answer though. Though they do need to be taught a lesson, I don't think that ruining any chance at getting at least a semi-decent education is a good answer.

The only good that would do is ensure a terribly shitty life, likely full of crime and jail time and a lot of pent up hostility that builds up and fucks his head up nice and good. 20 years later with all that hate inside him brewing he might just go kill a innocent native that wasn't guilty of anything other than having the same hue of the guy he did this to.

I actually watched the video in the link and looked at the article before I posted what I wrote above. I'm a little bit surprised...

I think "Mob" is a bit overstated. I think a little shaming is in order for the kids and the parents of the children involved. Maybe some sensitivity course or something. Nothing more than that.

Except for that one kid who gave that evil looking "smarmy douche" smile while staring the old man down. You could almost see a miasma of hate coming off of him. If he's currently not getting mental health help, he should be after this. That kid is going to hurt somebody. Lucky for everyone that he didn't hurt anybody on that day. He's a ticking time bomb though.

The tuition for that school is almost $9000. What I see is some rich kids, doing what rich-kid bullies do. Like what some of the bullies on this website do. But, bullies will be bullies. They think they're entitled to bully. It's shameful. Shameful.

They need to be taught a lesson, but I think they inherited that "entitlement" from their parents, so who is going to teach it to them?

Ok, there is another video out there with "the truth" about what happened. Extended video and commentary says that these kids were waiting for their bus when the native group approached them, and video seems to support it because the kids are more or less bunched up on stairs steps and the man beating the drum with a few other people are seen walking TOWARDS the kids. According to the commentary, the kids COULDN'T back up because there were stairs and other kids behind them. Also, according to this "the truth" video, the man beating the drum says "Go back to Europe where you came from". The boys are anxious to go home and are chanting "Let's go home".

I guess any event can be made to look like anything, if you choose the right bits and pieces to show. I don't know what happened here, but in this day and age there are probably several videos from several people which cover the "before" and "after" as well as the few minutes that are shown over and over, maybe they can put together a coherent story.

I think I would evaluate whatever comes up on the basis of "who approached who first". There was an incident where a man watching a parade accused a parade marcher of assault, and yet you can clearly see the man watching the parade launch himself off the curb and into the parade so ...??
