I had thought there were other threads on the subject, but they must be hidden, or deleted.

Has anybody seen The Thinning? It was out in 2016, and then sequel was 2018.
The plot summary sounds quite drastic.

Brazil, 1984, Brave New World, The Matrix just to name some easy ones. I just woke up now and my mind is a bit foggy at the moment. I'm sure a lot more good ones come to me.

Note that I've never seen 1984. It was my favorite book of all time, and after watching Brave New World and how bad it was compared to the book I didn't want to ruin my memories of 1984 by seeing what somebody else envisioned.

Definitely don't watch the theatrical cut of Brazil over the Director's cut. Or if you've only ever seen the theatrical cut, do yourself a huge favor and watch the real version. No sunshine and lollipops at the end of that one.

It goes without saying not to watch the two Matrix sequels, but most people have ruined their memories of a nearly perfect movie by already having seen them.

....

Oh... also, most episodes of Black Mirror. Not technically "films", but I view great anthology series like this as a collection of short films.

That's a good list right there.

I don't care what anybody says.... Waterworld was a great flick. I know the internet shits all over that movie so much it's become a meme, but I'll argue the greatness of that movie until the end of time.

I don't think it will take that long though. I predict that people will eventually come around.

The Postman also happens to be one of my all time favs. Same with Demolition Man.

Judge Dredd was good for a few laughs.

I don't know if some of those movies would really qualify. You could probably end up putting about 200 movies on there like Deathrace/Deathrace 2000 if we're going to include flicks like Resident Evil.

Oh.... Judge Dredd but no Robocop?

Was RoboCop a dystopian society? I thought it was just regular Detroit.

I was thinking Judge Dredd was like cop, investigator, Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Which is different than our current society.

You think RoboCop was the same?

I would agree with those Deathrace type flicks. Were you thinking Resident Evil was normal surface society? If so, then I would delete that from the list.

I consider Waterworld to be an excellent flick. I don't know of a valid cause to belittle the finished product. But it was a huge loss on investment, because Kostner made the production way over budget. He insisted upon that floating set out on the ocean, and for continuity would only film during sun, which is apparently rare on the open sea. So it was all weather delays, and why other films are on soundstage inside a building.
Kostner eventually worked with Eastwood, but he could have learned a bucketful from Clint before WW. He did OK with Dances With Wolves because it was on land.

You remind me that I've seen Lincoln Ford Mercury in many other films, but he's never fulfilled my expectation after seeing his work in Postman. The Kostner daughters were wonderful in it, and I really appreciated Petty. The whole cast was wonderful.

Not seeing Interstellar on the list.

Seems to be 3 variations of 'dystopian'.

We pollute /destroy the planet and things go wonky
We socially and politically get really sideways and things go to hell
Aliens come down and screw things up.

I bet we could pluck folks from all over history and put them in a different time period and they'd say pretty much the same things.

Oh, how awesome ! Y'all have this and are able to do that, but why the hell do you allow that over there to happen ? What's wrong with you people ??

I didn't recall Interstellar as being dystopian.

I didn't consider Aliens alone to create dystopia, just maybe our reaction to them.
Probably should add District 9.

I didn't add Minority Report because, like RoboCop, they were just progressive advancements to the crime solving process.

I wouldn't include Deathrace types if they were Voluntary activities, mimicking Gladiators of old. If they were Government mandated sacrifices, then our world had devolved into dystopia.

That made me chuckle a little. You're probably right. Closer to regular Detroit meets the million dollar man. I only ever saw it once when I was a kid.

It's probably just my bias speaking here since I'm not a fan of the RE movies.

If we're adding Deathrace, we have to add The Running Man, obviously.

Oh shit. They made a Herrison Bergeron movie? I'd be almost as afraid to watch that as I am to watch 1984. HB is one of the best short stories I ever read, and certainly the best thing that was assigned reading in High School (a close runner up would be Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery").

How I neglected to add Idiocracy in my first post here escapes me. What a great flick that was. I love how both of my parents love that and Office Space and the looks on their faces when I told them they were written by the same guy who did Beavis and Butt-Head.

Yeah. I knew that Waterworld lost a lot of money. If memory serves, it was the most expensive movie ever made at the time at around $70 Million USD. But I thought it was fantastic as a kid and I've probably seen it 5 more times since then. I know I've mentioned in another thread somewhere that my brother seems to have jumped on the internet hate-train on the movie and says that it sucks now and I call him on his bullshit whenever he says it because he was sitting right next to me in the theater when we both enjoyed it the first time.

I REALLY liked Petty's appearance in The Postman too. He was always my favorite artist, and I thought his "nameless" cameo was great.

You're really making me want to watch The Postman again too. It's been years.
