You bring up a good point. I picked on Resident Evil specifically probably because I don't like the series, but I don't feel that everything on the list so far should be considered "Dystopian Future".

Out of your list of 3, I would personally only really label your second choice as qualifying: "We socially and politically get really sideways and things go to hell ".

Deathrace and The Running Man would qualify under those conditions, I think. Though neither movie was directly about politics (at least that I can remember), you'd have to imagine that things are pretty socially and politically screwed up if we've managed a future where we're televising gladiatorial style death matches for ne're do wells and corporations are profiting off of it.

Incidentally, it's kind of funny that both Jessie Ventura and Arnold went into politics later in life.

Would "The Hunger Games" series qualify as "Dystopian Future"? I never read the books and I haven't even seen all the movies, but I never got the feeling that was the future of people on Earth. I thought it was all fantasy? Maybe I'm wrong about that one.

I don't recommend 1984, but I really liked Harrison Bergeron, better than Idiocracy.

I already added Children of Man. What about Omega Man ? Isn't that sorta like I Am Legend ? One was nuclear war, the other was a virus.

It's hard to class some of these scifi genres

I tend to bunch them into groups, the Aliens franchise etc I don't really class these as Dystopian I class them as Scifi Horror much like the Resident Evil Franchise and other movies... they can also cross over into the Walking Dead Post Apolyapse genre

Then you have the super hero fantasy genre which is kinda more entertainment and escapism than social commentary

Utopia is the opposite of Dystopia, where scifi and technology improves the life of people on Earth maybe like the Classic Star Trek on tv?

While people might see Robocop as kinda 'normal' and funny I could get how some social political village in say Norway or Denmark or somewhere could see Robocop as a Nightmare future

Typically in a Distopia there is a big brooding government.. post modern ...neo modern... a big technoloical government trying to squash everything down, a evil Empire over everyone, Citizens duck, hide keep their heads down, live out dehumanized on a techo camp or reservation and exist with fearful lives, feeling the government's or military police eyes upon them at every waking moment. Sometimes they are given some entertainment but its false, its bread and brainwashing circuses worlds where maybe a minority of people are brutally repressed being afraid to step out of line for even a moment lest they be brutalized or worse, food is crap, air is crap, everything looks polluted and poverty, even though things got more modern problems just got worse.

Was Firefly a Dystopia? Not sure, because it also had an upbeat message

District 9 as it crosses two or more genres the Alien Invasion genre, indie adventure thriller, action film as well as Dystopia.
another South Africa production 'Charlie Jade' feels dystopian, a guy used to log on here ranting on how it was a better series than Firefly... well .... its still worth checking out

Outland a 1980s Western scifi film with Sean Connery was dystopia for me, also Blade Runner the old one and the remake, Judge Dredd the old version and new remake and the Japan anime Akira, the original Frtiz Lang Metropolis was a Dystopia, the Book of Eli and the Martix films, also V for Vendetta that comicbook guy with the weird mask and hat who inspire the 'anonymous' hacker group ..... Mad Max movies maybe Dystopia but I see this more as the world is really gone to crap, everything horrible and post apocalyptic

Omega Man was the remake of the first I Am Legend. I didn't know if you meant the original or I Am The Fresh Prince version.

Any reasonable folk would consider Detroit to be a nightmare.

I didn't really consider The Alliance to be utopia, while murdering it's Citizens, making War upon its own, with endless Criminal acts and Corruption.

Never Let Me Go is pretty good. I'd never even heard about it until last weekend, and if you go only by the description of the movie I never would have watched it before even if I had.

Wow. Could you possibly be any less descriptive? Did you NOT want anybody to go see this movie when you came up with that description?

I think the marketing for the movie was unfortunate. Nobody cared. It made only $111,000 opening weekend in the US on a $15 million dollar budget, eventually only grossing less than $10 million worldwide.

Not so much a dystopian future of our world, but a dystopian current day in a parallel universe that had quicker advancements in the medical community than ours.

I didn't like it as much as the person who recommended it did, but it was a movie that I'm still thinking about days after I've watched it, which in my book is what a good movie is made of.

Interestingly, at least to me, is that Andrew Garfield is one of the stars in the movie. When the person trying to sell me on watching this mentioned that, they told me that Spider-Man was in it. Not a good sell for me, especially when that led to a conversation trying to explain to me exactly which Spider-Man it was when I'd never go to see a Spider-Man movie for any reason. Had they mentioned that the guy from Under the Sliver Lake was in it, I would have been even quicker to watch it after the recommendation.

I didn't "know" his name before watching this, despite how much I loved Under the Silver Lake. But now this makes two relatively low budget movies that flew very low under the radar that he starred in that I hold in high regard. I think I might have to look deeper into Garfield's catalog and see if there are some other gems in there in between the Blockbuster schlock that buys the sports cars.

He's certainly a good actor. As is Carey Mulligan who I've never heard of before, and Keira Knightly who I've known about for a few decades now but have never seen in anything before this.

Who was she in Episode I? I never bothered with III but I saw the first two. Was it a brief cameo or something? It doesn't count if she had 5 lbs of makeup on her face.

I'd just sort of figured that she'd never be in anything I was interested in watching. I'm aware of the three you mentioned as well as the Pirates movies. I'm sure I've heard of her being in others as well over the years.

Her role was rather subdued in this flick. She played the role she was given well, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see other movies of hers like I would Garfield or possibly Mulligan.

You are never interested in watching an excellent film like King Arthur, on numerous Best Of Lists?
No wonder you never watch any good movies.
