Geezer,
I think SignyM was talking about the conflict in Ukraine, not about personal feelings. While there can be parallels drawn between the claims and circumstances surrounding the two elections, theirs and ours in the U.S, I don't think any condemnation was intended against you for being independent.

It is true that during the election season, strongly decided people like me did feel a bit hostile towards people who right down to the wire hadn't made up their minds, but that was largely due to our frustration with not knowing what the outcome would be, coupled with confusion as to what could make it difficult to decide between the two men. They're similar in many ways, true, but morally they have completely different beliefs from one another, and different mental approaches to dealing with complex world problems. They're night and day on many subjects, so it would seem to be fairly obvious to a decided person; you look at your issues and the candidates' stances, and the combination suggests your pick for the election.

Post-election, the hostility towards undecideds goes away in favor of either jubilation that they went with your guy or shock and confusion, bewilderment and depression that they didn't. (Guess which category I was in.) The hostility is nothing personal, it's a passing emotion related to events which also pass and then you move on.

Except in Ukraine, it's looking more and more dangerous to disagree with anybody. Here in America, as much as it bites my butt, we are saved from that violent chaos by our complacency. We reserve that kind of behavior for Red Sox wins.

Not to worry. SignyM and I have a history of bare-knuckles brawl and then kiss and make up (Figuratively. I'm a happily married man!). I don't take it to heart, and I hope SignyM doesn't either. The internet is a strange place, where differences sometimes get blown all out of proportion because of the tight focus on them, while the common grould never gets talked about. I do know, despite what some here would say, that our debates do cause me to look at things differently, and be more aware of what's going on.

That's good.
And I know what you mean. Firefly has a mysterious way of bringing even die-hard Bush and Kerry supporters to the table, not always civilly, but hey, it's a table!

We should begin a new 'Let the Healing Begin' campaign, plugging Firefly right and left (pardon the pun) and touting its uncanny ability to bring people together. Because Joss is a uniter, not a divider!

Maybe he could run for a seat in the House...

Amen to that! Speaking of Firefly hehe..This "Real world issues" board is alil bit similar to Mal finding a bluecoat bar on Independence day hehehehehehe

I just started watching the series again! I love DVD's! I even convinced my Uncle-in law ( a self -proclaimed Marxist) to watch the series!

Sorry to get off on a FF tangent LOL.

So let's celebrate tables! And bare-knuckle brawls! And then let's have a few rounds (alcohol, not ammo ) and drink a few toasts to our browncoats-in-arms. It's not often that I get to disagree with someone as wily as Geezer- heh heh heh- and even if my blood pressure goes up I always learn something from him. And that is why I LOVE this site.

Cheers!

EDITED TO ADD: The interesting thing that I find about FF fans is that they tend to occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum. Darndest thing, isn't it? I'll bet Joss did that on purpose.

Oh did I mention guns and knives?! Yeah those too..and dinosaurs, can't forget the dinosaurs.

I saw an episode the other night where Mal and crew are walking through town and they walk by a food vendor, with a sign that says "Good Dog!!" as the cook is slopping meat onto a grill..ROFLMAO, I wonder how many PETA folks that are fans wrote letters about that one?
