I'm jazzed for it. I think Greg Pak is an interesting choice. I'm not a big Planet Hulk fan, but I've enjoyed the Totally Awesome Hulk stuff I've read. And the Mal/Zoe relationship is something I'm particularly interested in seeing more of.

Fox acquired a "significant minority stake" in BOOM! Studios, which is probably why they wanted them to have Firefly rights, although I'm not really sure what that means in light of the Fox/Disney deal. Maybe there's no longer a reason for them to care. BOOM! is reprinting the old Serenity Dark Horse comics in a new collection, so I can't imagine that leaves Dark Horse with anything Firefly-related. I expect we'll be seeing Firefly comics exclusively from BOOM!.

While he wasn’t very familiar with the Firefly TV show before signing on (although, he clarified, he loved the Serenity movie), Dan McDaid was “excited straightaway” to work on the comic. At first, it represented “the chance to work with Boom!, the chance to work with Greg Pak, and an opportunity to draw lots of cool [stuff] like cowboys and spaceships.” Then once the official announcement dropped, he found another source of excitement for the comic: the Browncoats.

“The Browncoats are everywhere,” he said. “People I would never have expected to be Firefly fans came out and said, ‘Ahhh! I love Firefly!’ and ‘I’d give my right arm to work on that!’ It was a huge reaction that I really, really didn’t expect…Even the local newspaper wanted to talk to me about it.” Considering McDaid lives in a small post-industrial city that was voted one of Scotland’s most “struggling” cities, making it into the paper for drawing the Firefly prequel comic was no mean feat.

As I understand it, the Legacy book is just reprints of old Dark Horse comics (and weirdly, it doesn't even say which ones, as far as I can tell). The possibly signed print could be cool, but... what is it a print of? I'm jazzed to read Firefly #1, but do I really need NINE variant covers (8 + the box set exclusive)? I bet all of that variant art will be collected in the first trade anyhow.

I can't wait to get my hands on Firefly #1, but I think I'm just going to get the single issue for now and (almost definitely) the first trade whenever it comes out. Are other folks thinking of picking up the Big Damn Heroes box?
