Getting close to halfway through the year. At the end of the calendar, sometimes it is hard to recall all the great films from the early part of the year, getting overshadowed by the summer blockbusters and award season royalty.
So let's take a moment to recall and list which films have been your favorites so far this year.
So far my list is:
The Promise
Gifted
Colossal
Megan Leavey
John Wick 2
Brimstone is listed as 2016, but has a release date in 2017, so including it.
The Mummy
Baywatch (not because of greatness, but due to not much else better)
As I look at it, none of the ones I was most looking forward to have panned out. I was hoping to list 10 films, but either they have been lame so far, or I already forgot some good ones. Help remind me.
Other films mentioned in this thread:
Logan
Wonder Woman
Hidden Figures (released 2016)
Transformers 5: The Last Knight
Spiderman
Autopsy of Jane Doe
The Belko Experiment
Dark Tower
Logan Lucky
Before I Fall
Wind River
So share what you liked, hopefully about 10 selections. If you have a dozen, or only a few worthy candidates, that's fine.
Award worthy works, or just entertaining, like Bill and Ted or Ferris Bueler
I'll try to whittle down my list.
I have not yet seen Thor 3, Shape of Water, 3 Billboards, Snowman.

I think the only three movies I watched this year were Welcome to Me, ARQ and Burn After Reading.
I thought the first two were new. Sorry man. ARQ was 2016 and Welcome to Me was 2014.
Oh, wait... I did see a new one this year!
I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore

First half was great. 2nd half kind of dragged.
It qualifies as the best film I've seen from 2017 by default.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

I'm going to do a little revising, maybe...
Shape of Water
3 Billboards
Colossal
Wind River
Wonder Woman
Thor 3
Molly's Game
Logan
Dunkirk
Mudbound
(I may add Darkest Hour, if I get a chance to see it Sunday).

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was my absolute, hands-down favorite movie of the year. So much fun.
Also on the list, in roughly descending order:
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Thor: Ragnarok
Baby Driver
Battle of the Sexes
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Kingsmen 2: The Golden Circle
Coco
It
Logan Lucky
Get Out
The Last Jedi gets honorable mention as a movie I dislike less than The Force Awakens. It has perhaps some of the best SCENES of the year, which not gelling properly as a whole.
The latter also holds true of The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.
Although there were some other good movies, it's tough for me to call a movie the bst of the year if I have no desire to see it again in the future, even if I really enjoyed the first go-around (eg, Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming). The movies I've listed, including The Last Jedi and The Dark Tower, are all ones that I'll see again.

John Wick 2
Dark Tower
Valerian
GoTG 2
Before I Fall
Logan Lucky
Wind River
Bladerunner 2049
Three Billboards in Ebbing, MO
I have still not seen Spidey, Baby Driver, yet.
Gifted, Colossal, Dark Tower, Wind River are the top 4.

Gee whiz, I really should have asked earlier:
What are the best SCI-FI films of the year?
Quote:It looks like I really dropped the ball with updating the OP in the Fall. I got really busy around then. I think I have it updated now, seem to have every one included. Let me know if I missed some.

War of Planet of the Apes
Detroit
Bladerunner 2049
Gotti
Justice League
Wonder
Thor 3: Ragnarok
Una
The Shape of Water
3 Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri
Snowman
Molly's Game
Mudbound
Battle of the Sexes
Coco
It
Get Out
Kingsmen 2
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Jumanji 3
My list for best, or Top Ten Sci-Fi films of 2017:
The Dark Tower
Colossal
Bladerunner 2049
Transformers 5
Valerian
GotG2
Alien: Covenant
The Shape of Water
Dark Tower and Colossal are on their own plateau. Bladerunner and Transformers halfway to the next lower plateau. I have heard some complain about the editing of Dark Tower, but it seemed to me the transitions were in line with the overall cadence and pacing - not like an Uwe Boll work. I've only seen it 2-3 times, and at that time only had Colossal to compare caliber to.
If Logan, Wonder Woman were Sci-Fi, they would fit at the bottom.
I have not seen Thor, Justice League, Apes, Jumanji.
Bad Batch and Last Jedi were disappointing.
What are yours?

SGG mentioned in another thread that Shape of Water has been viewed as a beastiality film.
I now wonder if the love interest was intended to be a substitution for a Black person. Is that why it was set in the 1960's? I did get the references to slaves and slave owners and emancipation, but not exactly as a direct swap of skin color.
Is that all that was intended? A remake of interracial couple films? I can't even recall an example right now.
