This might be less a broken promise than Trump forgot what he learned last month about trade with the European Union:

US President Donald Trump complained bitterly about the German trade surplus on his meeting with the EU top in Brussels. "The Germans are evil, very evil," said Trump. This was learned by the SPIEGEL from participants in the meeting. Trump said, "Look at the millions of cars they sell in the US, and we'll stop that."
....According to a report from the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", the EU side was terrified about the lack of awareness of the Americans about trade policy. Apparently, it was unclear to the guests that the EU countries concluded trade agreements only jointly.
I doubt that Trump called the Germans "evil." I'm guessing he called them "nasty," which Spiegel translated to "böse," which Google then translated back to "evil."
When is Trump going to learn that he can't do a trade deal with only Germany? It's the whole EU or nothing. Last month we heard reports that Angela Merkel had to tell him a dozen times before he finally got it, but it sounds like he's already forgotten.

To really simplify, because the EU has not yet decided how to respond, if Trump forbids all German cars being imported to the USA (something he has talked about) then the EU might respond by forbidding all USA imports to EVERY COUNTRY in the EU, which is more than just Germany.

Trumps not as smart as he claimed. As a matter of fact, anyone who would surround themselves in the White House with people who know this stuff, and then just do what was suggested to them, would be a much better president. I know, you wanted the socialist. He wasn't in the general so you were shit out of luck. While you didn't push Trump for president as hard as SIG, you did vehemently attack Hillary. Even though, that left only Trump as a possible winner.
I too hated Hillary as a candidate, but Trump was completely out of the question. Everything I've seen to date tells me I was 100% right.

On Thursday morning, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney told a Senate panel that the massive tax cut plan they hoped to move through Congress would be fully offset by eliminating scores of tax breaks. A few minutes later, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told another Senate panel something very different. He said the massive cut in tax rates would be offset in large part because the economy would grow a tremendous amount.
Mulvaney and Mnuchin, two of the most influential economic advisers within the Trump administration, gave contradictory answers to the same question, on the same day, testifying before the same chamber of Congress. Trump is actually setting things up so that tax cuts will NOT be offset by tremendous economic growth and NOT offset by eliminating tax breaks. In a year or two it will become evident that Trump did not do the necessary work behind the stage scenery to make his promises come true. The result will be a multi-trillion dollar wealth transfer to the richest Americans from the poorest. That will have long lasting consequences for someone like 1kiki who wanted Bernie for President.

On May 24, Trump’s national security advisors — who, with Flynn gone, overwhelmingly have conventional American views on Russia and NATO — gave the New York Times a heads-up that Trump’s speech at the NATO conference in Brussels would affirm his commitment to the alliance’s core guarantee of collective security.
Then when it came time to give the speech, Trump didn’t do that.
His advisors later turned around and insisted that, of course, the United States remains committed to the North Atlantic Treaty and its critical Article V pledging that an attack on any NATO member will be regarded as an attack on all NATO members. And, in reality, that is a legally binding treaty obligation of the United States whether Trump likes it or not. The fact of the matter is, however, that these same advisors believed they had talked Trump into making a public affirmation of this and then he refused to do it.
To undermine NATO in this way has been a core goal of Russian (and, earlier, Soviet) foreign policy as long as NATO has existed. And through all the ups and downs of the Cold War and post-Cold War eras, Russia has never scored a success on that front until Donald Trump’s continued refusal to affirm that the United States will defend its allies. Why exactly Trump won’t do that remains a mystery.
