Today Trump was asked why he's been so slow to fill 600 open government jobs that are presidential appointees. Trump said it was because he didn't want to fill them. "A lot of those jobs, I don't want to appoint someone because they're unnecessary to have," Trump said. "In government, we have too many people."
But if he is telling the truth, he will have a management problem. The open jobs are all relatively high-ranking positions that implement the president's will. If he doesn't fill them, the bureaucracy is likely to keep lumbering along out of sheer inertia, and that means doing whatever it's used to, not what Trump wants it to do. The more high-level positions he fills with loyalists, the better chance he has of pushing the bureaucracy in the direction he wants it go.
I guess we'll have to wait and see. At this time next year, if Trump still hasn't filled a substantial number of the 600 positions, then he was telling the truth—and his advisers and/or Trump are unwise in managing their 1.4 million civilian employees, 1.4 million active military personnel and 0.8 million reservists.

He doesn't want to fill those positions for the reasons he said? I'm all for it. I guess we'll see how it turns out.
I think a lot could be done slashing a lot of lower level government jobs as well. Still waiting for that to be a thing.

Engagement Labs is a company that tracks "what people are talking about." Brad Fay, one of their executives, tells us that during the presidential campaign people were talking very negatively about everyone. They were more negative about Donald Trump, but they were plenty negative about Hillary Clinton too. However, the gap between the candidates changed from time to time based on external events:
"Most decisively, there was a sudden change in the net sentiment results that followed immediately after FBI Director James Comey released his Oct. 28 letter to Congress about a renewed investigation of Clinton emails. Immediately afterwards, there was a 17-point drop in net sentiment for Clinton, and an 11-point rise for Trump, enough for the two candidates to switch places in the rankings, with Clinton in more negative territory than Trump. At a time when opinion polling showed perhaps a 2-point decline in the margin for Clinton, this conversation data suggests a 28-point change in the word of mouth “standings.” The change in word of mouth favorability metric was stunning, and much greater than the traditional opinion polling revealed."
Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words:
In late October, Clinton leads Trump by 24 points in the Engagement Labs survey. Two days after the Comey letter is released, Trump is ahead by four points. Trump kept that lead until Election Day.
Once again: Hillary Clinton did nothing particularly wrong in her campaign. She didn't ignore working-class whites. She wasn't too cautious on policy. She didn't overestimate the impact of educated voters. She wasn't complacent. What happened was simple: 12 days before the election, the FBI director released a letter saying he had found a brand-new trove of emails and implying that this might finally be the smoking gun about her private email server. That's it.
We'll never know for sure if James Comey did this because he's terminally stupid and didn't realize what impact it would have, or if he did it knowing full well what impact it would have. But he did it. And that's why Donald Trump is president.

A lot of people elected Trump. One of them was Hillary Clinton, in so many ways. Not making peace with Bernie and his supporters, hogging the DNC and ticking off her fellow democrats. Not campaigning in states that were blue, where Trump was campaigning, and many of which then went for Trump.
Julian Assange, for leaking the emails. Vladimir Putin, in so many ways, Hassan Rouhani, for threating to attack if Hillary was elected. Soros, and his tentacles. Sanders, for not backing the party. Claire McCaskill, for calling attention to the DNC corruption, the DNC for being corrupt. and Lady Gaga, for this stunt on election eve, which according to the live online polls on one of those sites that were covering the live update, like 270 to win, cost HRC 1.5% in a few short hours. 
Say what you like about it, that's the mother of all stupid right there. She can say it was a Michael Jackson reference, but this ain't a gig, this is a presidential election, and you know what's not "edgy" in a presidential election? Nazis.
And HRC swooping in to pick up some of that toxicity, 
so that even though the media loves Hillary, their election day headlines overwhelmingly read things to the effect of "no, that's not a nazi uniform, this isn't a stealth signal to win the neonazi vote.? I hope not, it's just all kinds of brain switched to the off position.
And lastly, Donald Trump, and his family, because elections aren't just lost, they're won. And their message resonated with a large number of Americans. We could argue what we don't know forever, but it has to be true for it to have ever gotten this close, because he did not have the support of the republican party, the media, even fox news, and he did not buy any advertising and had essentially no backers. Even Rex Tillerson, who had given money to every GOP nominee in his career, didn't give money to the Trump campaign. And somehow wound up Secretary of State.
And it's thing like that which keep me in the wait and see camp.

The National Association of Business Economics’ (NABE) quarterly business conditions poll published on Monday found that while some companies reported accelerating investments because of lower corporate taxes, 84 percent of respondents said they had not changed plans. That compares to 81 percent in the previous survey published in October.

Yup. Too many years of attrition and overburdening remaining employees with the laid off employees and using fear of losing their own jobs to just smile and eat that shit sandwich every day. All of that new money just went into the DOW and made the rich, richer.
You can't put that shit back in the horse. Things can only get worse in the job market, no matter what happens.
Welcome to the new normal. I suggest everybody should start re-thinking how they shepherd the money they are able to make, rather than wishing on a star that the job market is ever going to improve.
