You write too much, Signym, revealing your misunderstandings about the simplest things. Have you forgotten that after the crash of 2008, there was broad consensus that something had to be changed?

The Obama administration, joined by a handful of Republicans, put together the Dodd-Frank act to overhaul financial regulation in the United States. Now Trump is dismantling Dodd-Frank. Can you understand that Trump is laying the groundwork for the next financial crisis, Signym? It is not about Trump; it is about the next few years of Trump's Presidency, years which will enrich Trump’s banker friends. The same enrichment that will happen for Trump's friends has already happened during Bush's Presidency before Crash of 2008.

There’s no great mystery as to how regulatory policy shaped primarily by the business interests of major banks will end — big profits, big bonuses, and eventually a big crash and a big bailout.

Bankers feel that if American banks weren’t regulated so much, they could do business more aggressively, which would be good for Trump’s friends. Trump’s choice of the COO of one giant bank as his top economic policy adviser and citation of the CEO of another giant bank as a leading authority on smart regulatory policy is a good sign of where he stands on this. His anecdote explaining that some of his rich friends are being told regulation is the reason they can’t get loans is, in its way, even more telling. Statistically speaking, there is more bank lending today than ever before. But it’s certainly true that if regulators allowed banks to engage in riskier behavior, some new risky bets could get made.

The downside, of course, would be a much more fragile economy.

But the genius of bank regulation as a policy area is that no matter how badly Trump screws it up, the odds are that on any given day, there won’t be a financial crisis anyway.

A poorly supervised financial system can pile on egregious hidden risks for fun and profit and suffer no obvious bad consequences for years. If it happens to blow up in an election year, of course, Trump is screwed.

But while dramatic moves on immigration, health care, and budget policy are sure to provoke immediate blowback, on bank regulation, it’s entirely plausible that Trump will sow the seeds of destruction and nobody will notice until reelection in 2020 is in the rearview mirror.

The groundwork of the next financial crisis has been building up under OBAMA. The Dodd-Frank bill isn't doing diddly-squat to prevent the growth of bad debt (mostly funding derivatives speculation, but also funding stock and real estate speculation and the Federal debt) or its contamination of the banking system, especially "retail" banking. They should simply have re-instated Glass Steagall ... all twelve pages of it. Instead of the 2,300-page Dodd-Frank, and the 22,000 pages of regulatory content around it.

It takes years, if not decades, of fiscal and economic mismanagement to crash the economic system. GWB almost got out of office scot-free after torpedoing the system for eight years in every way possible. Bill Clinton has YET to be recognized as one of the authors of the financial crisis with his Commodities Futures Modernization Act, his repeal of Glass-Steagall, and his diving into NAFTA and CAFTA.

Whatever happens in the next few years - stock market collapse, or what-have-you- is at the feet of Trump's predecessors.

“It’s impossible to overstate the negligence of the president of the United States not knowing basic facts about nuclear policy and arms control,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen said in a statement. "New START has unquestionably made our country safer, an opinion widely shared by national security experts on both sides of the aisle."

Daryl Kimball, the executive director of the Arms Control Association, a Washington-based advocacy group, said: "Unfortunately, Mr. Trump appears to be clueless about the value of this key nuclear risk reduction treaty and the unique dangers of nuclear weapons."
